However, the placement and direction of the optical receivers must be suitably determined for mobile communication because light has high directivity. In optical mobile communication systems, the communication quality varies with the direction of the mobile terminal. Therefore, we examined the angle over which communication is possible at various measurement points and defined it as the communication angle. The mean opinion score (MOS) was obtained to assess the communication quality using the communication angle as a parameter. In this paper, two situations, walking and sitting down, were regarded as representing the way optical mobile communication systems are actually used. We found that for walking, when the communication angle was over 180 degrees, the MOS was over 3 and over 50% of users could communicate usefully. When a user was sitting down, the communication quality did not depend on the communication angle, but only on whether or not the user could communicate in the direction he/she was facing. Thus, if the communication angle in the service area is over 180 degrees, it is possible to communicate in practical situations, even while walking.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. Cell coverage simulation results are presented, both in indoor and outdoor scenarios chosen for the system trials. Multiple coverage using two BSTs operating at different frequencies and at the same frequency is addressed here and different cellular configurations are studied in order to properly cover typical indoor and outdoor scenarios. Several millimetre-wave propagation problems, such as shadow fading, channel time dispersion and power distribution throughout the cell are pointed out and some solutions are proposed.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The scheme results from an application of the SAGE algorithm. Monte Carlo simulations of a synchronous scenario show that the method is near-far resistant and that it is robust against estimation errors of the channel parameters. Moreover, very short training sequences are required for the scheme to converge. Simulation results further demonstrate that a better performance is obtained when the users' bit sequences are cyclically updated in the order of increasing strength of the users' signals at the output of the whitening filter in the receiver.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The turbo-coded blind PSP receiver invoked the likelihood function in its metric calculations over the typical urban (TU) time-variant COST 207 fading channel fluctuating at Doppler frequencies between 0.8 Hz and 80 Hz. The size of the turbo interleaver was shown to be critical as regards to the overall system performance, and for a rectangular turbo interleaver size of 55/spl times/55 bits in conjunction with a 100/spl times/100-bit or 156/spl times/156-bit channel interleaver no transmission errors were recorded for the above two Doppler frequencies over the COST 207 TU fading channel.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. A key enabling factor is the possibility to automatically share the radio spectrum. Bandwidth efficiency is defined as the number of users that can be supported by a base station in a given spectrum. The bandwidth efficiency in a DS-CDMA and a frequency hopping system is studied when two operators share the same spectrum. The influence of base station location is also studied. The results indicate a substantial loss for the DS-CDMA system and a lower loss for the frequency hopping system.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. By doing so, the system will obtain some diversity gain when the received signals contain the same data. Moreover, when they contain different data, the mobile terminal is capable of mitigating the interferer waves and thus obtaining the desired signal. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by computer simulations and the possibility of constructing a system without the use of frequency assignment or time assignment in wireless networks is discussed.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. By means of computer simulation, the bit error rate (BER) performance of 1- and 2-bit conventional and decision feedback differentially detected (C-DD and DF-DD) GMSK systems in the presence of static and Rayleigh faded ACI is obtained. It is found that the best performance is achieved by the 2-bit DF-DD receiver and has resulted in BER performance improvements for the static ACI channel and error floor reductions for the Rayleigh faded ACI channel.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. Unfortunately, in parameter estimation the computation of the signal subspace often turns out to be the most time-consuming part. However, the computational complexity of the subspace estimation can be significantly reduced by means of tracking. To this end, we propose a new technique which is merely based on the projector representation of the subspace. The presented results are based on the DSP implementation of two algorithms for tracking the azimuthal and elevation angles of impinging wavefronts in an alternating mobile communications system.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. We propose and carry out the analysis for three types of link layer backoff schemes-linear, binary exponential, geometric-on point-to-point wireless fading links, where packet errors occur non-independently. In such a scenario, the back-off schemes are shown to achieve better energy efficiency without compromising much on the link layer throughput performance.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The complexity of maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) turns out be exponential in the channel memory. Hence, when dealing with channels with long memory, suboptimal reception must be considered. Among the suboptimal methods, the delayed decision feedback sequence estimation (DDFSE) plays an important role. This receiver is based on a Viterbi processor where the channel memory is truncated. The memory truncation is compensated by a per-survivor decision feedback equalizer. The DDFSE was originally proposed by Duel-Hallen and Heegard (1989), where the whitened matched filter was considered as a front-end. Our contribution is to extend the principles of MLSE and DDFSE to the case where the mean-square whitened matched filter is adopted as a front-end. Simulation results show that our proposed design of the DDFSE gives substantial benefits when a severe frequency selective channel is considered.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications.
