However, in order for this to become reality a number of issues must be solved. In this paper we present solutions-header compression and traffic classification-and figures indicating that for WCDMA, voice over IP can be competitive with traditional circuit switched speech services.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. In real life the radio signals are subjected to Rayleigh fading (fast fading) and interference. These result in large variations in signal strength. Power control (PC) is needed to compensate for these effects. Power control is one of the critical radio resource control functions in a WCDMA-based system. This paper describes a contribution of applying an adaptive (self-tuning) controller in the fast power control loop of WCDMA systems. Replacing the conventional controller with a controller that decides the PC command based on the history of the PC commands and errors improves the quality of the transmission significantly.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. It has been shown that this structure improves the cancellation capability of the CDMA systems compared to the conventional CDMA receiver and the adaptive multiuser structure. This structure combines the function of adaptive antenna array, adaptive multiuser detector and the RAKE receiver in one single structure. In this paper we study the transient behavior of the linear space-time receiver using the standard LMS algorithm. Results show that using the linear space-time receiver the training period could be reduced significantly, and the adaptation time is slightly affected by adding more interferers.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. The main concept of the proposed estimator is that it compares only the path metrics of transition paths which agree with the coding rules of modulation in the sequence estimation process. The concept has been found to be effective even for a sequence estimator with decision feedback loops such as a DDFSE, for error propagation can be suppressed. Simulation results, using CCK as a codeword, show that the proposed estimator's packet error rate performance is superior to that of a DDFSE with a codeword correlator, with a 19% improvement in multipath tolerance and 3.5 dB improvement in noise tolerance.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. A wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) system is considered in most of the region versions. It would be very useful to count on a radio channel emulator which allows one to evaluate higher layers protocols within this context. This paper presents a radio channel emulator developed for a code division multiple access (CDMA) based system. Its versatility and low complexity have been exposed, and the validation process to check the model accuracy has also been shown for this system as an example.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. In a WCDMA downlink, the common pilot code channel is used for channel estimation in order to facilitate multipath diversity combining. The quality of the channel estimates may be improved by averaging or filtering over several pilot symbols. However, the optimal form and bandwidth of the estimation filter depend on the channel fading statistics and signal-to-interference ratio. In this paper, we investigate pilot aided channel estimation through adaptive filtering. Thus, near optimum channel estimates are obtained with different fading channel speeds and frequency offsets.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. Putting the main emphasis on investigating the application of non-blind and blind channel estimation approaches to the identification of a full rate data Traffic CHannel (TCH/F9.6), we present a new idea of an iterative channel estimation based upon the capabilities of channel coding. We show that this method leads to a significantly improved performance especially for high speed propagations with Doppler frequencies up to 500 Hz. Giving the bit error rates (BERs) before and after channel decoding in terms of the E~/sub b//N/sub 0/ ratio, we show, furthermore, that blind channel estimation schemes could be as efficient as non-blind methods.","PeriodicalId":301441,"journal":{"name":"11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications.
