Many renewable energy sources (RESs) attract increasing attention in the community. However, most RESs can be easily affected by natural factors, resulting in intermittency and power quality issues in power generation. Consequently, the concept of the smart microgrid (SMG) is proposed. In this paper, a SMG model was established through MATLAB/Simulink integrating a solar photovoltaic (PV) generator and a wind turbine (WT) generator, a battery energy storage system (ESS) through power electronic devices. Then, an energy management system (EMS) was designed to monitor and control the performance of the SMG, and this proposed EMS aimes to maximize generated renewable power and achieve maximum economic benefits. Finally, the cash flow analysis was applied to prove the viability of the entire design.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116985884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The load modulating capablity of the SVC is enhanced by the inclusion of load dynamics in the control formulation which is obtained in the form of a Moving Average (MA) load model through a system identification process by using load power and voltage dynamic data. The obtained MA load model is used to estimate a supplementary voltage control input for the SVC based on the developed energy function control law which estimates the desired load power response based on the inter-area dynamics obtained from PMU measurements. The feasibility of the proposed method is evaluated on Kundur’s two area test system by using a composite load models with induction motor (IM) loads of different sizes and ratings. The comparison between the performance of the system with and without WAC and MA load model is presented which shows the effectiveness of the proposed control method.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130660805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The test case location is the Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The sizing of the Kangaroo Island hybrid microgrid system incorporating PV, wind, diesel generator, and battery storage have been optimized for four different power dispatch strategies: (i) load following, (ii) cycle charging, (iii) generator order and (iv) combined dispatch. The islanded microgrid has been optimized to minimize the CO2 emission, net present cost (NPC) and Levelized cost of energy (LCOE). All four dispatch strategies have been implemented in HOMER microgrid software platform, and subsequently the transient studies have been performed in MATLAB/Simulink platform. The results provide a guideline to estimate the generation-mix and required resources for optimal operation of an islanded microgrid with different dispatch scenarios.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130036439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the consequences of this is the reduction of system inertia, which makes the system vulnerable to instability following a disturbance. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are also increasingly being installed in modern power systems to mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy sources. This paper proposes a technique to improve system inertia by properly controlling the power absorbed/injected by the BESS using the derivative of frequency deviation as a control signal. The physical limitations of battery power and converter response time are properly incorporated into the BESS model, which is then integrated into the load frequency control model of a power system. The effectiveness of the proposed technique to improve inertia is then tested on a single-area and a two-area power system through the evaluation of rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) following a disturbance.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"41 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131235370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper compares the reliability of a DC-AC battery-integrated-converter system to a conventional single inverter battery energy storage system. To provide a comparative evaluation, an existing real 100 kWh energy storage system with a single-phase 25 kVA DC-AC inverter has been considered as a case-study for modularisation. The system is modularized by distributing and integrating individual DC-AC inverters into the associated extra low voltage (ELV) battery modules. Two different battery structures are proposed; one based on individual 24 V modules, a second on 48 V battery module pairs. The reliability of the original system and proposed systems are evaluated and further compared for different redundancy levels. The results show that for low failure rates of battery cells and inverters, the redundancy provided by multiple modules ensures a high reliability battery system. Furthermore, when designing the battery system with battery cells and inverters of higher failure rates, other approaches such as scheduled preventive maintenance is suggested as a means to maintain acceptable reliability. However, cost effectiveness of designing such systems should be taken into account as compared to the battery systems with low failure rates of components.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125723450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this reason, CMLI has been given much attention in renewable and industrial applications. However, in spite CMLI advantages, balanced input dc voltage management at the cascaded cells is still considered one of the main drawbacks, which limits its straightforward applications. Moreover, galvanic isolation between the input dc supply and the inverter output voltage is essential for grid-connected application. In such case, a step-up transformer is utilized between the inverter output terminals and the grid. This solution incurs additional cost, increases implementation size, weight and maintenance. In this paper, a CMLI is proposed for medium voltage applications by utilizing high frequency magnetic link to ensure galvanic isolation without the need to a conventional step-up transformer as per the current practice. 3rd harmonic-injected sine pulse width modulation strategy is adopted as a switching controller for the proposed cascaded inverter that is implemented and tested. Experimental results attest the simulation results and confirm the feasibility of the proposed inverter.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126664087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These transformers having different MVA ratings are critical assets that require proper maintenance to provide long and uninterrupted electrical service. The mineral oil, an essential component of any transformer, not only provides cooling but also acts as an insulating medium within the transformer. The quality and the key dissolved properties of insulating mineral oil for the transformer are critical with its proper and reliable operation. However, traditional chemical diagnostic methods are expensive and time-consuming. A transformer oil image analysis approach, based on the entropy value of oil, which is inexpensive, effective and quick. However, the inability of entropy to estimate the vital transformer oil properties such as equivalent age, Neutralization Number (NN), dissipation factor (tanδ) and power factor (PF); and many intuitively derived constants usage limit its estimation accuracy. To address this issue, in this paper, we introduce an innovative transformer oil analysis using two deep convolutional learning techniques such as Convolutional Neural Network (ConvNet) and Residual Neural Network (ResNet). These two deep neural networks are chosen for this project as they have superior performance in computer vision. After estimating the equivalent aging year of transformer oil from its image by our proposed method, NN, tanδ and PF are computed using that estimated age. Our deep learning based techniques can accurately predict the transformer oil equivalent age, leading to calculate NN, tanδ and PF more accurately. The root means square error of estimated equivalent age produced by entropy, ConvNet and ResNet based methods are 0.718, 0.122 and 0.065, respectively. ConvNet and ResNet based methods have reduced the error of the oil age estimation by 83% and 91%, respectively compared to that of the entropy method. Our proposed oil image analysis can calculate the equivalent age that is very close to the actual age for all images used in the experiment.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126735340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This communication protocol of appliances (Things) is known as the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT has huge potential to change the way we manage things. Household appliances are not monitored properly, hence some of the appliances are left unnecessarily in standby mode, some appliances are being run on a peak time while could be run on an off-peak period. This unmonitored power consumption constitutes a large chunk of energy wastage. If properly monitored and scheduled, a significant amount of energy can be saved. IoT can help us monitor and control the appliance effectively and efficiently. The paper presents an IoT based energy management system (IoT-EMS) to improve energy efficiency and demand-side management by real-time online energy behaviour monitoring, and intelligently scheduling appliances to reduce energy consumption while maintaining the highest level of user comfort. The proposed IoT-EMS utilizes data analytic and optimization techniques for providing efficient appliance scheduling and demand-side management. A network of sensors of appliances and various environmental variables using Raspberry-pi has been developed to monitor and control appliances. The Raspberry-pi which is a data acquisition and control unit is also connected to the cloud server via the home WIFI network. The cloud serves as the database and provides stigmatization as well as algorithm support for the Raspberry-pi control center. The comparative analysis of a typical household load profile shows that the propose IoT-EMS helps saving energy by intelligently switching appliance based on user presence and need. It also presents scheduling of the shiftable loads which simultaneously increase energy efficiency by operating shift-able load at low-cost energy period and reduce network demand.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134345349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electric vehicles (EV), photovoltaic systems (PV), wind turbines (WT), energy storage systems (ESS), vehicle to grid (V2G), and demand response (DR) are seen as those with the most significant potential impact on the PS. Whereas various aspects of the integration of these six technologies into PS are well researched, the technologies are often studied in isolation from each other or in small subsets (e.g. PV and ESS). In addition, the number of different combinations of the technologies penetration rates, considered in studies, is often small. This article presents an integrated analysis of how these six disruptive technologies, implemented as distributed energy resources (DER), impact on steady state technical operating parameters (i.e. voltages, voltage unbalances, peak loads) of distribution PS. The standard IEEE 123 Node Test Feeder is used to represent a typical electrical distribution PS, and is modelled using Matlab/Simulink. Almost a million power flow simulations are performed for various technology penetration rates. The resulting data sets are analysed and results are presented.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131967408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
