Mathematical models of conventional governor and turbine are developed, representing conventional synchronous generator frequency control, and are used to illustrate system frequency response for a range of typical conventional generating units. A mathematical model of a power-electronics interfaced Li-ion BES system is developed and used to represent a non-synchronous inverter-based generator with primary frequency control capabilities. MATLAB/Simulink is used to build a model of a small power system, and simulations are carried out with at a range of typical conventional synchronous generating units with a nonsynchronous generating unit in the power system. The simulation results demonstrate that the BES can be used for primary frequency control providing a faster and better response. BES is also capable of almost eliminating frequency overshoot and reducing 70% of settling time while providing primary frequency control in power system with various types of conventional synchronous generating units and a nonsynchronous generating unit.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128665955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve a safe and stable operation, a coordinated LVRT and HVRT control scheme is proposed to improve the fault ride through capability of PMSG-based wind farm. The improved control scheme can not only survive serve voltage dip or swell but also provide dynamic reactive currents injection at the same time. Different comparison case studies are conducted in PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the performance of the proposed control strategy.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128201901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, because one of its windings is directly connected to the grid, grid faults can result in significant over-currents and/or voltages in the rotor side converter (RSC). In addition large stator currents can increase the grid fault current. This paper explores several published control strategies designed to protect the RSC during faults. The basic ideas and details of how they are implemented are developed. Simulations will be presented to compare these strategies and evaluate their performance.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115044669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Failure in these can cause cascading effects leading to the possibility of poles catching fire. With climate change affecting the duration and extent of weather conditions such as drought, determining the performance of the SWER earthing system is important to ensure its reliability and resiliency. Since the soil is an integral part of the SWER earthing system, the electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity of a Vertosol type soil were investigated for the effects of changing temperature and moisture contents. The wooden pole was represented by different segments of resistances and was evaluated with its total resistance. A simplified electric circuit model was used to analyze the current through the pole. An analytical approach using COMSOL Multiphysics was performed in simulating the 2D axisymmetric model of a SWER system. The effect of soil cracking is reflected in a significant increase in the voltage across the wooden pole. This paper proposes an explanation of the sequence of events that lead to SWER pole fires under drought conditions.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116773801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several countries are working on improving their energy policies as a step of moving towards renewable energy resources. As a part of this movement in Australian, Victorian government has released several initiatives for rebates like small trading certificate (STC) for the Grid-connected rooftop solar, battery rebates, other rebates for a standalone system. Due to rapid decline in the price of the PV system, Australia is experiencing massive growth in rooftop PV. The question arises in everyone’s mind is to stay connected to Grid or going off-Grid? Now, both the systems have its pros and cons, but the lack of accurate analytical design approach resulted in a significant amount of oversizing, high costs is involved in the project and wastage of the resources. Hence, the installation of Grid-connected system has been increased a lot in the market and due to this oversizing of the system, excess solar feeding into the Grid, understandable it is beneficial because, it reduces the emission from the fossil fuel generators by displacing but the local electricity distribution network might be unable to digest these excess exports which are happening and confirmed by several residential households when they discovered their grid voltage is higher (i.e., 255 V ~ 260 V) than the nominal voltage 230 V. This resulted in PV system generating less than it should, and the consumers ended up getting higher bill than before solar installation. So, the networks are started to tighten their PV connection agreement by export limiting the system partially or entirely zero export. This paper presented a decision support tool for the assessment of feasibility of staying connected to Grid or off-Grid by carrying out numerous economic and technical analysis using the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) simulation software.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114923069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This severe challenge has created a very high requirement on the detection time of dc fault detection method. In this paper, a S transform (ST) based fault detection method is developed with 0.4 ms detection time which is quite low comparing with existing methods. Basically, the method is composed by the high frequency detection and the low frequency screening algorithm. The high frequency detection algorithm is responsible for providing fast response to various transients, while the low frequency screening is used to pick up dc faults among them. The principle of this method and the concrete computation method is illustrated in detail and its validity is verified by applying it on the 4-bus ring multi-terminal dc (MTDC) system in MATLAB/Simulink. This method shows a great performance in terms of detection time and correct identification of the fault line. A comparison of this method between wavelet transform (WT) and short time Fourier transform (STFT) is also made to show its uniqueness.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114056850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
