The paper complements the traditional MPC approach with elements of classical control and feedback quantization (FBQ) principles. The proposed FBQ- MPC operates in dq-rotating frame, includes integral action and an advanced modulator. Subsequently, it offers improved tracking performance, low sensitivity to modeling errors and disturbances, low harmonics and low EMI, making it an attractive solution for various applications. Findings of the paper are validated by extensive simulations and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125591456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presented approach splits a large complex traction network into smaller subsections that are solved independently, then reformed and optimised to the original network, while considering various conditions such as normal, abnormal and emergency. Solutions of network electrical subsections are combined to produce and map the correct representation of the network model switchgear to deenergized or energized the network state in real-time, at any given time. The proposed technique provides ‘safety first approach tool’ for a system switching, switching isolation- restoration steps, representation of the network’s isolation and energized system that mimics practical cases. The approach has been implemented as diakoptics technique based automated traction simulation tool. The tool allows electrical network bypass, extension and safety critical system improvement requirements. Also, has been verified and implemented in Adelaide tram traction systems. Further, it has been used as a familiarization, training and desktop practice switching environment for new employees.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126891313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grids with high penetration of variable renewable energy in non-traditional locations are susceptible to larger voltage variations that could lead to detrimental effects on the overall voltage profile of the network. In the Australian context, the voltage control strategy is bound by the National Electricity Rules, which apply to any generator seeking connection to the grid. The rules determine a set of parameters which can be negotiated during the connection process. For very large scale wind farms effectively composed of multiple smaller wind farms, an additional challenge is faced as the performance characteristics of the system are assessed at its connection point and interface with the Network Service Provider. The area controller described in this paper presents a novel method of managing the steady state conditions of a large scale wind farm (currently under construction in Australia) by adjusting the voltage setpoint of multiple local wind farm controllers performing fast voltage control.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121478585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dq Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) based reference-current extraction technique has been widely utilized for this purpose. The dynamic performance of reference-current detection is dependent on numerical filters. In this paper, the two most popular filters, Delayed Signal Cancellation (DSC) and Moving Average Filter (MAF) are utilized in the rotating reference frame for both fundamental component identification and selective harmonic identification. A comprehensive comparison of the performance of these two filters is then carried out. Experimental results from digital implementation are provided to substantiate the theoretical analysis and simulation results.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128046048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This reliability is mostly influenced by the dc-link capacitors, which are employed for reducing the voltage and current fluctuations. The voltage or current ripples affect the battery state-of-health for different solid-state reaction-based battery technologies, including lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. However, unlike solid-state reaction-based conventional battery technologies, the vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) features solution-based charge-discharge reactions. Therefore, the VRB system possesses much higher mass transfer rates and may not be affected by the voltage or current ripples. Considering this characteristic of VRB, a capacitor-less bidirectional synchronous buck-boost dc-dc converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter is operated in current control mode to charge or discharge the VRB system up to a certain level of state-of-charge (SOC). The average charging or discharging current is controlled by a PI controller. The operating principle of the proposed converter is explained in detail, and the performances are verified by the simulation results.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128057305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both generations are dispatchable and cleared against their offer prices. They offer a firm, hourly-schedule (WH schedule) for 24 hours ahead of real-time operation to an auction based locational marginal price (LMP) market with other generators offering to meet the system loads. The model network consists of other generators and loads at different buses. The scheduled power is taken off at a predetermined bus, as a load at the bus. This schedule must be met by the wind and hydro combined generations. If necessary, a notional thermal generation is available at a considerable higher price to meet the schedule, at the off-take point.The objective is to minimise the total supply cost for 24 hours and examine LMPs and constraint-on costs while respecting the given WH schedule, nodal power balance constraint, generation limits, branch flow and other limits. Discussion is based on New Zealand (NZ) Electricity Market rules, where generators are self-committed into the market. Three scenarios are studied, and the results presented.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132629617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Determine a possible solution for condense cost of electricity generation at Rottenest Island, Western Australia, Australia. For a feasible solution, diesel generator concept replaces to hybrid system considering different configurations, such as solar-wind and diesel hybrid system. These systems are evaluated by Hybrid Optimization Model of Electric Renewable (HOMER) software based on the real data for Rottenest Island in WA, Australia. The HOMERpro software reduces the unit cost of energy (COE) and net present cost (NPC) for various cases to reduce the CO2 emission of GHG for the generation system. In addition, the sensitivity results and optimization results are obtained from the input parameter, such as solar irradiation, wind speed and non-renewable inputs. Simulation results indicate that the hybrid system is substitute when associate with current and future development of electricity generation. The simulation results obtained from this analysis has confirmed a better combination of hybrid energy systems, which will not only increase the reliability of the hybrid system but also reduce the levelized cost of energy (LOCE). This paper demonstrated for the design of hybrid system using solar, wind and diesel for the reduction of GHG which are produced from only diesel generator at Rottenest Island. It also reduces the NPC and LOCE.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"340 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133752719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional power grid can be transformed into a smart grid by augmenting it with information and communication technologies, and machine intelligence. Machine learning and artificial intelligence can enable smart grid to make intelligent decisions and respond to sudden changes in customer demands, power outages, sudden drops and rises in renewable energy output or any other catastrophic events. Machine learning can also help capture customer consumption patterns, forecast energy demand and power generation of intermittent sources, and predict equipment failures. Reinforced learning can aid in making energy dispatch decisions and activate demand management signals in order to maintain balance of power supply and demand. The usage of wireless technologies in smart grid renders it vulnerable to cyber security threats. With the increase in data volume, it is now possible to employ machine learning for the detection and prevention of anomalous behaviour, intrusion, cyber-attacks, and malicious activities as well as data authentication. This paper reviews the application of different machine learning approaches that aims at enhancing the stability, reliability, security, efficiency and responsiveness of smart grid. This paper also discusses some of the challenges in implementing machine learning solutions for smart grid.","PeriodicalId":301431,"journal":{"name":"2019 29th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134464057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
