{"title":"Autoantibodies in neurological paraneoplastic diseases.","authors":"K O Lövblad, J Boucraut, H P Lehmann, R Stahel, F Regli, A J Steck","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Paraneoplastic syndromes such as the subacute sensory neuronopathy (SSN) and paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) are associated with autoantibodies directed against various neural antigenic structures. SSN is characterised by autoantibodies against a neuronal intranuclear component called Hu (M. W. 35 to 40 kD), whereas in PCD these antibodies are directed against a Purkinje cell cytoplasmic component called (M. W. 34 and 65 kD). Neuroblastoma cell lines maintained in culture have been shown to contain neuronal antigens. We have demonstrated the presence of the Hu antigen in neuroblastoma cell lines such as SKN-SH, LAN-1 and IMR-32 by both immunocytochemistry and immunoblots of nuclear extracts. The Yo paraneoplastic antigen has been found to be expressed in HeLa cells. These methods may be used for screening of patients with suspected paraneoplastic disease and/or malignancy. Western blot analysis appears to be superior to immunohistochemistry alone. In our experience only 11 out of 122 SCLC patients were positive for the anti-Hu antibody, whereas 5 out of 5 patients with SSN/SCLC were positive, and all of the neurological controls were negative. The availability of cell lines expressing paraneoplastic antigens offers an easy diagnostic assay which may complement or replace conventional immunohistochemistry.
","PeriodicalId":30134,"journal":{"name":"Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry","volume":"145 3","pages":"3-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18542508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We looked for specific clinical clusters which would enable us to differentiate statistically the groups of children according to their adult diagnoses. We present here the results for the group of children who were diagnosed as suffering from \"personality disorders\" in adulthood. We were able to establish an infantile cluster that significantly differentiated these children. It includes: aggressiveness, oppositional behaviour, unsociability, conflicts with peers. 54.6% had already been diagnosed as suffering from personality disorders in childhood. According to these results, the more a consulting child fits this profile, the greater the risk that he will suffer from a \"personality disorder\" in adulthood. We discuss the continuity/discontinuity of the symptomatology, and the implications for diagnoses of \"personality disorders\" and \"borderline personalities\".
","PeriodicalId":30134,"journal":{"name":"Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry","volume":"145 4","pages":"13-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18540943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[Apropos of Swiss research in psychogeriatrics. A critical analysis]. [关于瑞士老年精神病学的研究。批判性分析]。

{"title":"[Apropos of Swiss research in psychogeriatrics. A critical analysis].","authors":"J Wertheimer, D Antonioli","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Psychogeriatrics is the general psychiatry of old age. It is closely related with the biological and human fundamental sciences and with the medical disciplines concerned with the care of old patients. Its issues are ubiquitous and also interest non psychiatrists, particularly geriatricians, internists, neurologists and psychologists. Therefore there is a risk for research to be spread out. As a medicine of synthesis, it must assert itself as a convergence point for the related branches. Its very vast field of research is confronted with particular methodological problems, like the chronological and biological age, the heterogeneity of the population, the polymorbidity. Psychogeriatrics is young and still requires an important involvement in the clinical tasks, in the medico-social coordination and in the teaching to medical and paramedical circles. Rare are centers having the critical mass for developing good research with complete peace of mind, Switzerland is an example of this. An analysis of the 1992 international literature shows a certain scattering of the psychogeriatric themes with a 50% predominance of papers devoted to dementias. In the future, psychogeriatrics must well limit its territory, particularly by developing services where care, teaching and research are harmonized.
","PeriodicalId":30134,"journal":{"name":"Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry","volume":"145 2","pages":"17-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18533451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The score distribution of the MND patients did not differ from that of 321 controls. Eleven of these patients were retested after a mean interval of 8.5 months. Single photon emission computed tomography with 99mTc hexamethyl propylene amine oxime (HMPAO) and focal motor seizures. 单光子发射计算机断层扫描与99mTc六甲基丙烯胺肟(HMPAO)和局灶性运动发作。

{"title":"Single photon emission computed tomography with 99mTc hexamethyl propylene amine oxime (HMPAO) and focal motor seizures.","authors":"B Weder, R Oettli","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The proper localization of regions of interest (ROIs) in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is an essential task. The limited spatial resolution makes it difficult to define regions by their structure. The particular problems are: 1) the difficulty to find the appropriate slice and its orientation in space; 2) the individual variation of the brain in dimension and shape. Referring to the basic work of Talairach and Szikla (1967), research is conducted to overcome these methodical problems in interpreting cranial computed tomography by using a proportional localization system. We analyzed four cases with focal motor seizures of different aetiology (tumour, hemorrhagic infarction, intracerebral hematoma, multifocal leukencephalopathy) by 99mTc HMPAO SPECT. The accumulation of the radiopharmacon was measured in ROIs which were delineated with the aid of the above mentioned system. The regions were selected in accordance to the autoradiographic study of penicillin induced epileptic seizures in animal experiments. Dependent on the severity of the clinical manifestation we were able to document the involvement of the supposed primary focus and of several related zones. We suggest that this approach should prove some usefulness in the examination of the interdependency of different brain areas.
","PeriodicalId":30134,"journal":{"name":"Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry","volume":"145 5","pages":"25-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18711575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
