For constant Wind speed and blade pitch angle aerodynamic torque coming from wind is constant, with the increase in demanded electrical torque the rotor speed decrease. Preferred function of the wind turbine is to keep the turbine speed close to rated speed and also the output power close to the rated. In this control method by controlling the demanded electrical torque the rotor speed is maintained constant. With the help of simulation it has been shown that at different demanded electrical torque the rotor speed is constant hence uncertainty due to demanded electrical torque is restrained by the robust controller.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121498989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fault classification technique is developed on the basis of extensive simulation studies carried out on the power system model within the MATLAB Simiilink program for different operating conditions. Discrete wavelet transform has been applied on the fault current and the mean of approximate coefficients of the phase signals is calculated. Daubechies4 wavelet transform has been applied to decompose the phase signals into Scale 1 wavelet coefficient. The detection is carried out by analyzing the mean of approximate coefficients of the phase signals and the fault classification criteria are presented.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115245770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Along with it, power demand at remote locations and providing uninterrupted power have created more challenges which have to be dealt with. The most feasible solution for these problems is distributed generation or formation of micro-grids involving renewable energy sources. But micro-grids suffer from voltage fluctuations and power oscillations, which increase the instability of the system. Use of FACTS devices can be effective for improvement of the stability of the micro-grid system. This paper presents a micro-grid system comprising of two diesel generating units using alternators and a load. A STATCOM is connected to the load bus for the voltage profile improvement of the system. Dynamic modeling of the micro-grid system is done and the system is simulated with and without STATCOM. The results are analyzed. The system is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"223 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122891700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power system transmission congestion occurs due to the violation of its thermal limit. In this paper, along with generator rescheduling technique renewable energy source like wind farm has been introduced as a congestion management problem solver. Bus sensitivity factor (BSF) has been introduced here to find out optimal location of wind farm whereas generator sensitivity factor (GSF) determines the number of participating generators for rescheduling their output. At last optimization technique like Firefly Algorithm (FA) has been adopted for generator rescheduling process along with wind firm. This method is applied in IEEE 39 bus New England Test System.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129029822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed generation (DG) including wind energy, solar energy can be a solution for the energy shortage in the existing power grid. Distributed generation is the generation of power using small sized generators that produces electric power at low voltage levels and is connected to the distribution network directly near the load centers. The distributed generations have some negative impacts in the existing power grid in the protection level. The DG sources like wind energy, solar energy etc are dynamic in nature which results in the variation of source impedance. In the presence of distributed generation the fault current characteristics are also changing. The existing relay parameters are not able to identify these changes, which results in malfunction of relays. The solution strategy adopted for the malfunction of relays is adaptive relaying. Adaptive relaying means the relay has to adapt to the changing environment and the decision making capability is to be added with existing relays. The impact of increment of DG penetration in protection in IEEE 5 bus system and a real system which is a Kerala grid system is studied and multiagent based adaptive relaying is proposed as a solution strategy.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121219148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A DSTATCOM is placed at each bus of a distribution network, one at a time, and its impact on system power loss is investigated. A new mathematical modelling for DSTATCOM is done to suitably incorporate it in the forward-backward sweep load flow algorithm of radial distribution systems. It is observed that there is appreciable reduction in power loss with DSTATCOM allocation at certain locations. In addition, the grid experiences sudden changes due to the inability of the relays to adjust to the prevailing network conditions on the occurrence of a disturbance. This can be reduced by continuous monitoring of system transmission capacity margins and increasing stress on the system. The invention of measuring device, called Phasor Measuring Unit (PMU), that measures the phasor data across the system and communicates to dispatch center through a communication channel, made it possible to redesign network protection schemes to make them more adaptive and thus improve the security of the system. This paper presents the applications of the PMU data in making the relays more adaptive and in the monitoring of grids behavior under disturbances.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127093975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of solar photovoltaic is increasing day by day as there is an abundant amount of energy which is being received from sun on earth. The photovoltaic system when placed as a fixed structure at a particular angle is inefficient because this system is unable to extract maximum power from sun. In this paper, a single axis solar tracking system has been used. The control algorithm for solar tracker can move the panel in both the directions i.e. east to west and west to east in a step function. The stepper motor is switched on at regular intervals of half an hour owing to which there is reduction in consumption of power as compared to that of a continuously run motor in conventional solar tracking systems. The output power, obtained from the setup is higher than those reported in literature.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126589827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The superior penetration of wind energy technology for electrical power production has been growing since past decade due to the unique impressive features of wind technology viz. pollution free, cost effective, low initial cost, less maintenance requirement etc. Variable speed wind power application is used profusely for maximum wind power extraction as compared to the fixed speed method. To harness wind energy PMSG are often chosen for their attractive attributes such as less weight, no external excitation, small in size, gearless drive which are best suited for variable speed wind power application. But it is very difficult to achieve control over it's power flow due to coupling between generator flux & torque & random nature of the wind power. These challenges lead to the development of a matured modern control approach known as vector control. In this paper the sensor less vector control strategy has been studied for the control of the machine side converter. Both PI controller based vector control & SMC based vector control schemes are considered in this work and a performance based analytical comparison is made between them. A variable speed direct drive PMSG based system is modeled using Matlab/Simulink and the results are compared and discussed.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122370074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The low speed performance is improved by implementing the adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in adaptive mechanism of MRAS. In this method the reference model is free from dc drift and gives better speed response as voltage and current model rotor flux components are equal.
