We aim to analyze whether government capacity is important for technological innovation not only in democratic countries but also in non-democratic countries. \u0000Research design, data, and methodology: This paper analyzed how political systems, especially democracy and government capacity, affect technological innovation for the period 1997-2017 in 101 countries using data extracted from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators. The relationship between political systems and technological innovation was examined using the Negative Binomial Regression Model (NBRM), which is commonly used to analyze count data with the characteristic of over-dispersion. \u0000Results: The findings indicate that as democratization progresses, there is a corresponding increase in innovation performance. Additionally, democratic nations demonstrate higher levels of innovation compared to non-democratic countries. Furthermore, the research reveals that countries with robust government capacity, as measured by factors such as the effectiveness of public officials, provision of public services, regulation and support of the private sector, and corruption control, tend to achieve superior innovation performance. \u0000Implications: These f indings support t he a rgument put forth b y Acemoglu a nd R obinson, s uggesting that i n order to a ttain s ustained economic development and innovation, countries require a certain level of government capacity associated with the operation of exploitative economic institutions. The escalating power struggle between the United States and China has now evolved into a technological competition between market democracies and s tate capitalism. It also examines the association between a vector of household demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and household consumption expenditure in an attempt to identify how much inequality can be attributed to each of explanatory factors. This study empirically draws upon the recent national representative dataset, Survey of Household Finance and Living Conditions (SFLC) 2 021 c ollected b y Korea Statistical Office. \u0000Results: According to the present study, inequality in 2021 in South Korea was found to be mainly dominated by inequality within population sub groups. Examining the determinants of household consumption inequality, it shows that factors and their conributions are different between male and female headed households. For instance, whilst the type of job occupation of a head appears to have a large impact on inequality within male headed households, it is found to have marginal contribution compared to within female headed households (25.2% vs. 7.4%). In case of household demography, it is observed as the second largest factor increasing within inequality among female headed households (31.2%) whereas its contribution to inequality within inequality among male group was relatively small (18.6%). \u0000Implications: Our study suggests that target specific investigation and deep structural understanding need to be made on the different characteristics of within inequality as reflected by the different role of factors and their contributions. Amongst, the different inequality impact of higher education might reflect that the expansion of higher education had a relatively lower impact on the living stand of female group than that of its counterpart, male group. Finally, the discriminatory barriers (e.g. job occupation) against female may reduce within inequality, it could widen total inequality, worsening distribution between male and female groups.

The study aims to understand how these investors impact R&D spending, a crucial factor for sustainable growth, particularly in the context of the implementation of the Stewardship Code. \u0000Research design, data, and methodology: The analysis employed panel analysis on 105 manufacturing companies listed on Nikkei225 from 2014 to 2020. We used the intensity of R&D as the dependent variable, with institutional investors holding more than 3% of each company’s shares as the independent variable. By classifying institutional investors, we compared the results between domestic and foreign institutional investors. \u0000Results: The analysis revealed that outside blockholders had a significantly positive effect on R&D. However, when institutions were classified, different results emerged. While domestic institutional investors had a significant positive impact on R&D, foreign institutional investors did not yield statistically significant results. Additionally, the financial institution variable, acting as the control variable and related to insider investors, consistently demonstrated a significantly negative effect across all models. \u0000Implications: Despite foreign institutional investors dominating the Japanese stock market, it was found that domestic institutional investors have emerged as significant outside blockholders in each firm. Traditionally criticized as passive investors, domestic institutional investors are shown to influence and promote R&D for long-term growth, in line with the Japanese stewardship code. While foreign investors are often associated with potential decreases in R&D for short-term gains such as ROE and dividends, no significant evidence was found. Moreover, with increasing stake ratios, foreign investors have the potential to positively impact Japanese firms in the future.

Based on this, we analyze the challenges facing Korea and Japan, and then consider why strengthening cooperation between Korea and Japan is important and necessary under the current trade environment where protectionism is rampant. The analysis method uses various international organizations and Korea-Japan trade statistics to analyze the structure and characteristics of Korea-Japan exports and imports, the effects of the Korea-Japan FTA within RCEP, and the ripple effects of the expansion of Korea-Japan cooperation. \u0000Results: This paper analyzes the relationship between the economic and industrial structures between Korea and Japan and suggests that building a strong cooperative relationship at the present time, as it has in the past, will bring about mutual benefits. In particular, it emphasizes the need for active response through multilateral cooperation on the international stage, such as RCEP and IPEF, and not limited to cooperation between the two countries. Specifically, the Korean and Japanese economies have a fundamental condition in which they cannot help but prioritize the U.S.-led economic bloc when choosing between the U.S.-led economic bloc and the Chinese-led economic bloc. However, as mentioned above, the Korean and Japanese economies are faced with a dilemma in that they have a connection and closeness with the Chinese economy that cannot be easily escaped. If bleeding occurs due to intensified competition between Korean and Japanese companies, there is a high possibility that only China will benefit as it will be able to purchase at low prices. On the contrary, if cooperation between Korean and Japanese companies is strengthened and transactions are carried out with Chinese companies, the Chinese economy is still highly dependent on the Korean and Japanese economies, so negotiations can be advantageously guided in the direction demanded by both Korea and Japan. \u0000Implications: Our government must recognize that Korea and Japan can continue to generate economic benefits by strengthening cooperation between the two countries, even under the economic security paradigm, considering the similarities in economic and industrial structures, the closeness of the economic development process, and the shared concepts of capitalism and free markets. The reason for looking at Japan’s industrial trends is that not only has Japan made various efforts early on in this field, but Korea is similar to Japan in demographic structure, and so there are many things to refer to from Japan’s industrial trends. Also, looking at Toyota Motor’s case in relation to corporate strategy, we can find that the company not only clearly presents its strategy as a mobility company, but is actually implementing it by launching various products and services. Research design, data, and methodology: As to the Japanese mobility industry trend, we first briefly look at the Japanese government’s policies, and then look at the trends by components of the mobility industry such as electric vehicles, autonomous driving, personal mobility, and flying cars. And regarding Toyota Motor’s mobility strategy, we look at electric vehicle strategies and development organizations, and look at strategies for each field, including automobiles, MaaS, personal mobility, and flying cars. Results: As a result of analyzing trends in the Japanese mobility industry, the following points were confirmed. At first, the basic direction of mobility policy in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry was securing mobility services that provide new value, realizing carbon neutrality and reducing traffic accidents, and strengthening the industry’s international competitiveness. In the automobile industry, we find that the electrification of automobiles had a significant impact on the industrial structure, resulting in the weakening of the vertical division of labor and the advancement of the horizontal division of labor. In the mobility field, not only automobiles but also personal mobility plays an important role. The Japanese government was promoting deregulation in this field, and startups were playing a large role in the private sector. In addition, in the field of UAM, or flying cars, the government and the private sector were cooperating to improve various standards. In addition to industry trends, this study examined the strategy of Toyota Motor Corporation, and found that the company is advancing into each field that makes up the mobility industry and pursuing business in all directions. First, in the automobile sector, the company was a little late in moving to electric vehicles, but it set a new direction by announcing a large-scale electric vehicle investment plan in December 2021. In addition to investing in electric vehicles, the company was pursuing a transformation of its automobile business from hardware-centered to MaaS-centered, the key elements of which were MSPF and Autono-MaaS. The company also actively entered the personal mobility field and the UAM or flying car business.
