The future development of these technologies faces multi-fold challenges, which are determined by the complexity of the myriad of emerging user and usage scenarios, the scarcity of radio spectrum (licensed and unlicensed), and the quest for user-friendly, data-intensive and security-sensitive technology and applications. This paper outlines the challenges and trends around the integration and development of smart wireless and data technologies, also in relation to standardization. Further, this integration is studied for a specific e-Health scenario in terms of application and usage requirements, involved technologies and required enablers and standardization needs.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133472394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two user-specific QoS aware schedulers are proposed that considers the user-specific QoS requirements in the allocation of resources. Depending upon whether improving the MOS (Mean Opinion Score) or both the system capacity and the MOS is the goal, a MOS improvement scheduler or MOS-plus-capacity improvement scheduler is proposed for VoIP applications. Detailed system implementation analysis based upon LTE system specification is performed, and it is shown that very modest modifications to current protocols are needed to support user-specific QoS aware scheduling. System simulations are performed for a set of VoIP users assigned specific QoS target levels in the OPNET Modeler for LTE systems. Simulation results show that appreciable MOS or/and system capacity improvement can be achieved if such user-specific QoS requirements are considered in the proposed user-specific QoS aware schedulers. Also, it is shown that the scheduling period of up to 1000 ms doesn't significantly impair the system performance.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132784575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have proposed CrossLayerMethod [1] to solve the resource allocation problem including joint routing, scheduling, and power control for MIMO-based mesh networks. However, the computation complexity is prohibitively expensive for networks with more than ten nodes. The goal of this work is to develop efficient approaches including ProtocolMethod, ProtocolWithActualMethod and SequentialMethod, to solve the resource allocation problem for moderate to large MIMO-based mesh networks. Among them, ProtocolWithActualMethod, a two-step approach, achieves the compromise of performance and computation complexity. The first step implements ProtocolMethod, which applies the iterative approach proposed in [2] to solve the problem without considering interference among MIMO links. The second step is to compute the actual throughput over the set of assignments found in first step. Large numbers of numerical experiments are used to show the performance of these methods.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133419694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This testbed provides multiset, multi-group of WSN experimental setup that is capable to provide opportunity to perform remote code editing using over the air programming mechanism. This testbed also provides an intuitive web-based interface to the registered users for running the experiments, accessing and editing the source code of the experiment from anywhere in the world by means of internet. This remote triggering mechanism offers the user a flexible environment for the experimentation. An experimentation setup of 150 wireless sensor nodes are developed to suit the design of both indoor and outdoor experiments. The outdoor lab setup allows the users to learn the wireless propagational effects in the real environment. The WSN indoor lab setup comprises of nine sensor network experiments which allows the users to learn the WSN concepts such as configuring a WSN, clustering mechanisms, time synchronization mechanisms and experience the practical implementation in real time. This test bed offers the researchers and students an opportunity to trigger their inquisitiveness by providing the access to remote equipments and materials needed for the experimentation, shared via virtual manner wherein the experiment conduction and output observation can be performed online through an effective visualization tool.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123766087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to shortcomings of related approaches, we introduce MobileCoach (mobile-coach.eu) as novel open source behavioral intervention platform. With its modular architecture, its rule-based engine that monitors behavioral states and triggers state transitions, we assume MobileCoach to lay a fruitful ground for evidence-based, scalable and low-cost behavioral interventions in various application domains. The code basis is made open source and thus, MobileCoach can be used and revised not only by interdisciplinary research teams but also by public bodies or business organizations without any legal constraints. Technical details of the platform are presented as well as preliminary empirical findings regarding the acceptance of one particular intervention in the public health context. Future work will integrate Internet of Things services that sense and process data streams in a way that MobileCoach interventions can be further tailored to the needs and characteristics of individual participants.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116118903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast, the scheme presented here, based on the complex lapped transform, is running at the same symbol rate as OFDM. It does not require a cyclic prefix and, in the multi-user context, it provides a high level of spectral separation between users. In addition, a high performance per user carrier frequency offset compensation can be implemented in the receiver in a straightforward manner. Theoretical derivations are completed by simulations for channel equalization and carrier frequency offset compensation. With its reduced computation speed and its level of performance, the proposed scheme should strengthen the case of FBMC as an alternative to OFDM for asynchronous access in future wireless networks and cognitive radio.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122993267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intrinsic channel characteristics and the impact of shadow fading on the reliability of signal prediction were taken into consideration. The mean relative error was calculated to prove the limitations of area-mean, distance-dependent path loss modeling. The distribution of the local mean values of the received power was investigated. Losses from walls and other objects were measured and compared to respective values for the indoor 2.4 GHz channel. Results confirm the impact of obstacle losses on the reliable estimation of shadow depth, as well as their dependence on frequency.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124113393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach constitutes an interesting generalization of Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) which has shown many benefits in MIMO systems. After examining the properties associated with independent output grouping, we proceed to propose an alternative, practical technique, called Per-Group Precoding (PGP), which groups together multiple input symbol streams and corresponding receiving branches in the “virtual” channel domain (after singular value decomposition of the original MIMO channel), and thus results in independent transmitting/receiving streams between groups. We show with numerical results that PGP offers almost optimal performance, albeit with significant reduction both in the precoder optimization and LDPC EXIT chart based decoding complexities.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115026497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper tap on the ubiquitous mobile device and proposes the development of a mobile phone based assistive visual aid for the elderly hearing impaired to assist them in their daily life when they choose not to or cannot afford to wear hearing aids. In fact, the proposed assistive visual hearing aid can be used by the hearing impaired community at large and not just confined to the elderly. The visual “hearing” aid takes the form of a noninvasive, inexpensive, in-conspicuous and easy-to-use app on a mobile phone or tablet in which the elderly can record the speech. It will automatically perform a speech-to-text conversion locally on the mobile phone in real time such that the elderly can read the text visually. Non-real time conversion is also made available where the conversion is done at the backend server via Internet. This app is intended to enable the hearing impaired community and the elderly to lead a fulfilling and independent lifestyle despite the challenges caused by their impairments.","PeriodicalId":300798,"journal":{"name":"2015 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium (WTS)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115326808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
