While affirming Enderlein's suggestion that the verb ὑστερέω is better understood as “lack” rather than “fall short,” we argue against his conclusions (1) that this translation leads to a subjective genitive reading of πίστις Χριστοῦ in Rom 3:22, 26; and (2) that the verb alludes to the early Jewish theology of Adam in Paul's day and thus should be read in view of the Adam/Christ contrast in Rom 5. We suggest that rendering ὑστερέω as “lack” in fact has no direct linguistic bearing on Paul's use of πίστις Χριστοῦ; however, this rendering of ὑστερέω does influence interpretation of Rom 3:23–24 because of its relation to other words that share its semantic domain.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68866194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It expands on the presence of Adamic allusions in Rom 1–7, in order to suggest that Adam's obedience reasonably disambiguates πίστις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Then, it argues that πίστις has the meaning potential of “faithfulness,” which further supports a possible association between Rom 3:21–26 and Rom 5:12–21. Finally, it concludes that Rom 3–4 is more coherent, both rhetorically and theologically, when πίστις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ is read as a subjective reference to Jesus' own faithfulness.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68865747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For Paul, these two aspects of his relationship with Christ can be expressed simultaneously. That is, the Christ in whom Paul dwells (for example, Phil 1:1) is the Christ whom Paul longs to depart in order to be with (Phil 1:23). This essay argues that for Paul the absence of Christ is a function of his ongoing humanity and possession of a body that is both localizable and distinct and distinguishable from believers. The essay proceeds by (1) overviewing the seeming tension between the presence and absence of Christ in Paul's letters, (2) examining more carefully the motif of the absence of Christ, (3) examining two texts where Paul portrays the body of the exalted Christ as both human and discrete from believers. Finally, (4) I examine two more texts where Paul specifically expresses the absence of Christ in bodily terms.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68865770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I am interested in developing techniques that would make computers learn to robustly understand and process natural languages. Building computing systems that can process and converse in natural languages has been a long-standing goal of artificial intelligence and researchers have approached this goal from two opposing directions. One of the directions can be described as “broad and shallow” in which researchers have focused on tasks like information extraction, word sense disambiguation, semantic role labeling etc., that involve analyzing open domain natural language text but the analysis done is typically shallow which is suitable just enough for inferring some simple properties about the text. The second direction can be described as “narrow and deep” in which researchers have focused on deeper analysis of natural language text but restricted to specific domains. The topic of my dissertation research, learning for semantic parsing, is an example task from this direction. It is the task of learning to map domain-specific natural language sentences into their complete, formal meaning representations which a computer program can execute to perform some domain-related task, like answering database queries or controlling a robot.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68866183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
