MIB was officially proclaimed as a nation’s philosophy in 1984. MIB is defined as the national philosophy which holds three essential elements or integral components, Malay, Islam, and Monarchy. Hence, this study was conducted to identify the extent and how the concept of MIB in Brunei’s radio broadcasts is being disseminated from the perspectives of Bruneians. As a result, it is shown that the MIB values are there being implemented and disseminated to the society through radio broadcasts. The dissemination consists of various aspects that are aligned with MIB which are Malay values, Islamic values, monarchial and statehood aspects, knowledge enhancement, and kinship. Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) merupakan satu konsep falsafah yang menjadi milik Negara Brunei Darussalam, diamalkan oleh semua lapisan masyarakat sama ada dalam urusan negara mahupun kehidupan seharian. MIB telah diisytiharkan secara rasmi sebagai falsafah negara pada tahun 1984. MIB ditakrifkan sebagai falsafah negara yang mengandungi tiga elemen penting atau komponen integral, Melayu, Islam dan Beraja. Justeru, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenal pasti sejauh mana dan bagaimana konsep MIB dalam siaran radio Brunei disebarkan dari perspektif rakyat Brunei. Hasilnya, menunjukkan nilai-nilai MIB yang ada di sana sedang dilaksanakan dan disebarkan kepada masyarakat melalui siaran radio. Penyebarannya terdiri daripada pelbagai aspek yang diselaraskan dengan MIB iaitu nilai-nilai Melayu, nilai-nilai Islam, aspek beraja dan kenegaraan, peningkatan ilmu, dan persaudaraan.","PeriodicalId":294201,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Pengajian Media Malaysia","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115796397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It addresses the social depictions, honest portrayal, and conflicts between heterosexual and homosexual characters based on sexuality in Nollywood films. The study adopted a quantitative content analysis of twenty (20) Nollywood films. The study revealed that homosexual characters are depicted as physiologically, psychologically, socially and spiritually misfits. However, the film producers made an educational effort in exposing practices seen as offensive to societal norms and values. Further findings reveal that homosexual characters are portrayed as morally negative. This demonstrates the truism of the normative hypothesis that media take colouration of society in which they are situated. Finally, the study revealed a high level of perceptual conflict of non-acceptance, stigmatisation, rejection and prohibited reaction by heteronormative characters towards homosexuals based on their sexuality. In this sense, the Nollywood films examined by this study illustrate unwelcome, stereotypic, anti-social and homophobic narratives of homosexual characters that align with Nigerian society's social, civil, cultural, and religious belief systems. It is recommended that well-researched based content on sexual minorities beyond the depiction of the social position on their sexuality to more issues relating to the causal factors and ways of addressing such sexuality should be more focused on since in it has been marked as a crime in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":294201,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Pengajian Media Malaysia","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131899852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey participated by 200 young adults studying in Malaysian universities was carried out. Results demonstrated the youth active engagement on Instagram. However, the direct relationships between the time spent on Instagram, social comparison, and self-esteem were inconsequential, with no significant differences between those using Instagram frequently and those who did not. Yet, the study observed considerably low self-esteem among the respondents and active tendency to make social comparisons while using Instagram during the social restriction period caused by the pandemic.","PeriodicalId":294201,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Pengajian Media Malaysia","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132371937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study will examine its needs and their effect on the local communities in Sabah. Results of the study found that trilingual newspapers in Sabah play an important role in both the political aspects and the local wisdom of the state of Sabah. In addition, this study also draws attention that the use of the standard Kadazandusun language in Sabah local newspapers affects the inter-ethnic relations of the Kadazandusun community itself.","PeriodicalId":294201,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Pengajian Media Malaysia","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131610099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study examines how the mainstream media, alternative media and government media set their issue’s salience agenda on Twitter during the pre and post GE 14. A total of 7,533 tweets from six media organisations namely Berita Harian, The Star, Malaysiakini, Free Malaysia Today, BERNAMA and RTM were downloaded and analysed. A content analysis, bivariate correlation analysis and time-lagged analysis were conducted to identify the hierarchical pattern of issue’s salience and the causal relationship between issue’s salience agendas between these media. From the analysis, it was found that the mainstream media, the alternative media and the government media have a different inclinations in setting up their most important issue on Twitter during the pre and post GE 14. Mainstream media were found to place sports issues as the most important issue on their agenda on Twitter, while for alternative and government media, political issues and issues of national administration and governance were their top priorities. Meanwhile, the transition of the government post GE 14 also has an impact on the causal relationship between agendas involving the mainstream media, the alternative media and the government media on Twitter. For instance, during the pre GE 14 period, the agenda of the mainstream media did not have a significant relationship with the agenda of the government media. However during the post GE 14 period, the agenda of the two media was found to have a significant relationship. In the context of the causal relationship, the two media did not have a mutual influence on each other during the pre GE 14 period, but this situation changed after the GE 14. As for the alternative media, its relationship with the government media also changed after GE 14 in which its agenda no longer influences the government’s media agenda and vice versa. During the pre GE 14 period, the two media were found to have mutually influenced each other in their agenda on Twitter. For contemporary Minangkabau society then, attending public performances in the West Sumatran homeland are no longer the only way of enjoying and appreciating oral literature. Media genres available on commercial cassettes and video compact discs (VCD), Minangkabau perantaus, as well as those domiciled in West Sumatra, are able to appreciate their traditional verbal arts in the privacy of their own home. The same is observed of the kinds of recording in Malaysia. Minangkabau perantaus have been here for generations, embraced within the larger Malay society and the Alam Melayu (Malay World)—a geographical spread transcending the Archipelago. Minangkabau oral traditions and media extend through the rantau – not only in Kuala Lumpur, but also in Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Jambi, Medan, Pekanbaru, Palembang, Batam and Denpasar.
