Only a small international literature exists on the evolution of spa resorts with scant writings for the Global South. For small town South Africa the histories of spa tourism mostly are unrecorded. This article addresses this knowledge gap by investigating the historical development of one spa tourism resort, namely Montagu in the Western Cape. Archival and documentary sources are utilised to analyse the tourism development of this small town from its formal establishment in the early 1850s to the closing apartheid years during the late 1980s. It is shown that Montagu’s rise was part of the wider growth of South Africa as a health destination which was anchored upon its assets of climate and mineral springs. The thermal springs of Montagu put the town on the tourist map resulting in its declaration as a health resort and emergence as a popular holiday destination. This study investigates the repercussions of the economic crisis induced by the coronavirus epidemic on the Hungarian corporate sector. It assesses corporate vulnerability through profitability and indebtedness dimensions, utilizing financial statements and credit data from 2019 and 2020. Initial scrutiny by sector and size reveals vulnerable company segments, followed by a territorial analysis to identify crisis-affected actors. Findings indicate that accommodation and food service, construction, administrative and support service activities, education, art, entertainment, and recreation economic branches, as well as smaller enterprises, were most impacted. A felfedezés kíváncsisága az elemzés, a tanulás kíváncsiságává érett, és ha maga nem tudta, nem akarta e tapasztalási folyamatot továbbvinni, keresett a környezetében olyanokat, akik az „ügyet” folytatták. The main topics we have attempted to assess are regionalism in Hungary, the tasks of geography, the local, regional and international tasks of the University of Pécs, the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences in Pécs, and the operation of the Doctoral School of Earth Sciences. The author has based his research on his personal experiences as a student and staff member, as well as on interviews and written sources. Through secondary analyses of literature, as well as professional experiences and personal impressions gained as a student and colleague, it attempts to synthesize the professor’s scientific work related to urban reclassification and formal urbanisation. József Tóth’s influence extended beyond the academic sphere not only as a science organizer and rector, but also as a regional developer. This commemorative essay also points to the relationship between the scientist and politics, the never-ending struggles of the geographer in the formation of regional policies. This article aims to present his scientific talent management at the University of Pécs through the data of his PhD students (n=63). During the analysis we used university publications and electronic databases, as well as Spearman’s correlation calculation, independent T-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, Kruskal–Wallis test and Chi-squared test to explore the relationships. The largest proportion of students were born and worked in the Southern Great Plain, North Hungary and Transdanubia, however the winner of the regional talent migration is Transdanubia. The professional openness of the professor is reflected in the topic selection of the dissertations completed under his supervision. His students, carrying on his intellectual heritage, are still active in scientific publishing. During his first trip, between July 7–26, 1901. reached Finland, then in 1910 he travelled on the Scandinavian peninsula. He did not give a lecture at that time. The outstanding result of the year 1910 trip was a week of field research work spent on Spitsbergen (now Svalbard), where the conference audience of around 70 people toured the island together with local professional management. At the beginning of 1933, he reached Sweden and Norway again. He gave a total of four lectures in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo. He spoke to the participants twice about the development of the Hungarian nation, and twice about the development of human cultures. His projected readings took place with great interest and press coverage. After his travel to Sweden and his autobiographical memoir, the legend about the scientist’s alleged nomination for the Nobel Prize took off. The veracity of these stories can now be refuted. In order to answer this question, the professor’s career is outlined in three approaches, as they basically determine whether someone can be called an epoch-making scientist. These are, in order, outstanding academic performance, managerial ambitions and aspirations and professional institutional background. József Tóth was undoubtedly an outstanding figure in Hungarian human geography, but he could not really give it the style he envisioned. Our journal would like to contribute to a worthy commemoration. Perhaps it is not surprising that the following articles recalling the past appear in the thematic issue of Modern Geográfia. This is partly due to the fact that the professor was the founder of our journal. In terms of their scope and genre, the following articles are not research articles in the classical sense of the term, but rather short studies, or more precisely essays, which are based primarily on personal memories and experiences in addition to secondary analyses of academic literature. All of our authors invited to the commemoration were students, friends, and colleagues of József Tóth, so they gladly agreed to pay tribute to the professor’s memory with a piece of writing each.
