It is based on the life of mystic saint Meerabai and her husband Bhoj Raj. Meerabai is considered to be the first woman saint of Bhakti movement in the Indian History and still remembered throughout the world for her utmost devotion towards Lord Krishna. There are several novels and movies based on her life and in most of them she has been celebrated and pedestalized as a saint. Nagarkar’s Cuckold is an exception. A novel dealing with the life of saint Meerabai and her husband with such title makes it out of the ordinary. This paper aims to scrutinize the character of Meerabai in this novel.

In spite of that, very seldom we realize the sanctity and validity of this discourse. It is a grim reality that the modern world looks at odds with its cultural concerns and subsequently it alienates itself from the framework of responsibility, which is an utter disregard for a developing culture. Being a preliminary branch of art, literature serves a dual role in the scheme of things for the cultural development. On the other hand, it is an outcome of cultural progression, because the literary treasure of any social group is a part of its culture. On the other hand literature provides all the necessary ingredients for the formation of a culture – complex, that is an aggregate of cultural ethos. Mathew Arnold described art as a “criticism of life”. This view was an extension of Aristotle’s belief that art depends upon the imitation of nature. There was however some other scholars like Oscar Wilde, who believed that life itself imitates art. Both these theories are interesting and vital in understanding the concerns of literature as a work of art in the construction and preservation of culture. At the same time we have to formulate a canon for delineating the cultural concerns of literature. The topic of this research paper is an attempt to draw our attention toward this fundamental issue, that relates the human society to a larger canvass of its designated ideals.

Her fifth novel, So Good in Black published in 2011 celebrates globalization and the free passage to western countries for Indians and for the westerners to India. Human relationship is the main crux of postmodern writings and Gupta also brings out the cross-cultural human relationship in So Good in Black with much details. At the backdrop of Kolkata, India, Gupta colourfully draws the human relationship especially man-woman relationship in this novel. As the values of life are at stake due to the materialistic advancement in the modern world, Gupta highlights the fact that human relationship always lies in dark and it is good to keep it in black. The characters namely Byron Mallick, Max Gate, Damini and Ela suffer as they from relationship with themselves and with others who are their kith and kin. The women characters namely, Damini, Ela and Barbara become victims in the hands of Byron and Max, as they try to form relationship among them. The cultural values of India and the West is comparatively discussed by the author in this novel to bring out the very nature of Indian woman like Ela who gives importance to Indian culture and prefers it though she experiences cross-cultural human relationship.

In Girish Karnad's works, female characters constantly rebel against the traditional position of women in Indian society and try to find their own way. His works make fun of the unjust values ??of the patriarchal society, which does not care about women's feelings and regards women as only inferior people who are absolutely loyal to him. Call it Nagamandala, Hayavadana and The Fire and the Rain, all these elements are everything. The exploitation and oppression of women has become an established culture of male chauvinism, so his works represent a meeting point where women are portrayed as enlightened and liberated with resistance. Girish Karnad strives to overcome male dominance, hoping to raise awareness of how women are exploited and abused in the name of marriage. Karnad started her work to meet the challenge of resolving controversial issues. As for women, she has experience in discriminatory politics that supports gender and caste paradigms.

The term is referred to women who exercise control over their own lives in personal, social and economic matters, and pursue their own desires. The concept as a consciousness emerges due to social and cultural changes, rise of urban centers, increased immigration, industrialization, growing influence of consumer culture and changes in the structure of labour force. The concept appeared in late Victorian fiction with the intention to focus on women and about woman from the standpoint of woman. Chiefly New Woman expresses their dissatisfaction with contemporary position of women in marriage and society. Manju Kapur’s Custody registers significant aspects of new woman i.e destigmatizing infertility in the novel. She presents this as newness in woman in her thinking and to lift the social disparity between men and women. The paper attempts to explore the concept of new woman and theoretically to understand ‘home space’ and ‘public space’ of woman that kills and diminishes the status and position of woman in a traditional Hindu society.

Its traces can be found in the writings of Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. Shades of socialistic thoughts can also be discovered in the Santan Dharma scriptures, Islamic scriptures and the teachings of Jesus Christ. But it was only in the beginning of the 19th century that socialism as a political, social and economic philosophy gained momentum. \u0000Jawaharlal Nehru believed that no country or individual could develop much without social freedom and a socialist structure of the society and the state. The idea of socialism had been a constant thought in his mind since the pre-independence days. As an economic modernist of his times, Nehru believed in the development of large-scale industries, which he thought was the only key to overcome poverty in the country. Nehru’s concept of socialism was not merely a rigid theoretical doctrine. Theories when put to practice entertain pragmatic difficulties. When Nehru got the opportunity to apply his concept of socialism as the first Prime Minister of India, he had to confront with many complications. His idea of socialism was subjected to many changes looking to the vast population of India. A strict adherence to any doctrine may prove detrimental at times, more so in a country, like, India. Nehru, therefore, envisaged a policy of mixed economy, of course socialist in nature, which would be best suitable to the needs of the country. India has both a rural and an urban economy and what is required is a harmonious blend between the two for the growth and development of the country. The construction of a series of big dams for agricultural irrigation along with the production of hydroelectricity i.e. energy for industrial purposes reflects Nehru’s idea of drawing a balance between the two major sectors of the country. \u0000What Nehru meant by Swaraj was not merely political freedom but beside political freedom it should include social and economic justice for the Indian masses. Independence should bring not only a change of the officials but should also bring a change in the fundamentals of the life of a nation. \u0000The year 1991 will always be remembered in India as a year which is witness to a drastic change in the Indian economy policy. This was the year when the Government of India drifted from Nehru’s policy of mixed economy and announced the new economic policy which consisted of a wide range of reforms. Thirty years have passed under this new economic system and now the time has come when we should evaluate and analyze how far this new approach has been beneficial to the country. \u0000Today, the country is face to face with innumerable problems; problems related to inflation, unemployment, caste, class and religious activism. The country needs to address these problems in a determined way before it is too late. I understand that the time has come when we need to once again look back to Nehru’s vision of Swaraj and socialism for a p

According to Indian tradition, wives are always subservient to their husbands and family. And is seen that a women's life is completely controlled either by her family or her husband. Women sacrifice their dreams and desires for the sake of their families. They are not allowed to share their thoughts or opinions on anything, all they can do is accept the decision taken by a man with great silence. \u0000Jaya the protagonist of 'That Long Silence' represents the 90's women in our society. The title of the novel itself refers to the conditions of women in a patriarchal setup. Deshpande’s novel directly deals with the dilemmas of housewives. The novel itself can be said to be an autobiographical novel of Deshpande. Deshpande has mainly focused on the life of middle-class educated women in the late 90s Indian society.
