The losses are reduced by using a new switch cell that consists of an inductor, a diode, a capacitor, a main switch, and an auxiliary switch. This technique reduces the reverse-recovery-related losses of the rectifier with the inductor that controls the di/dt rate of the rectifier during its turn-off. In addition, the main switch turns off at zero current, while the auxiliary switch turns on at zero voltage. Optimum design for the single chip DC/DC converter is achieved by analyzing the amount of conduction and switching losses. Their exploitation has been hindered by high switching losses not only in the power stage but also in the gate driver. Gate drivers with square-wave and sinusoidal-wave shapes are analyzed and a new high efficiency soft-switching gate driver with gate capacitive energy recovery is proposed and implemented. The conditions to achieve zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation and design considerations for a 2.65 MHz power converter are also presented. It features power factor correction and fast response to sudden changes in the load, while providing the capability to vary the power supplied to the load. Power variation is achieved by means of pulse density modulation using variable-length sequences; thus allowing a high number of power levels to be achieved. The field distribution can be considered as 1D when the magnetic field (H) shows negligible values in two of the three dimensions, and the magnitude of the nonzero coordinate keeps constant along this 1D direction. Therefore, 1D models should be modified in order to be used with planar transformers, because their magnetic field vector has a constant direction, but its magnitude is not constant along that direction. This work presents a 1D model for planar magnetic transformers. Since those components are widely applied this procedure can become a useful analysis tool. While the usable power semiconductors are relatively easy to understand, the diversity of circuit topologies, discussed in the literature, is considerably more difficult to evaluate. What further complicates the situation, is the fact that in addition to technical requirements (crest factor, power factor, EMC), cost plays the major role in this application. In this paper we present a classification for known circuit topologies and add some new ones. The control circuit is based on a DSP.
