This is the first time that cross wavelet transform has ever been applied to sleep apnea type classification. The developed method takes the airflow and thoracic effort signals, as an in-put, which are then transformed to time-frequency and phase plane in order to extract the information of correlation between the two signals during different apnea condition. As the cross-wavelet returns large number of coefficients, which may be difficult to handle in some automated detection system, therefore dimension reduction was necessary. In the work, kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) based dimension reduction technique has been applied, and four Eigen values from each of the cross-wavelet amplitude and phase coefficients found to be effective for detection of apnea into three categories i.e., obstructive, central and mixed. The proposed system has been tested on the recordings obtained from 23 subjects. The average classification rate obtained using simple threshold technique was 85% ± 0.78%, and the values for each class were 85.2% (obstructive), 86.4% (central) and 83.6% (mixed). The results show that cross-wavelet is useful in order to distinguish the apneas, as it looks into the phase and amplitude coherence between the two signals.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127963022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can also be used as an alternate method for weed control as the cell rupture occurs on the weeds at the compatible electric field on the grains. In this work, the paddy seeds were treated in power frequency AC electric fields and pulsed electric fields. Then they were cultivated in actual agricultural field conditions to study the impact of electric fields on the crop life. The germination rate growth of the treated paddy seeds were observed and the results were compared with that of the untreated paddy seeds. The higher electric field intensity, higher exposure time and higher number of pulses improved the percentage of germination. The growth rate was higher in treated seeds at initial stages and it was not significant after certain period of germination.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127037414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stable operation of power system depends mainly on the balance between active power and reactive power consumption and its respective generation. Nowadays, the operation of power system is kept near to its maximum stress level for maximizing the profits of the operating bodies. More priority is given to the active power market at cost of overlooking reactive power balance. This paper presents the need for emphasis on reactive power balance and adverse effect of MVar loading stress on synchronous generator. The ageing phenomenology is linked with stressed operation of the synchronous machine in order to highlight the inevitable need for reactive power management. Six bus test network is considered here for the case study.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126656160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The applied voltage was 50Hz AC, the electrode material effect on the BDV's was studied in the needle-plane configuration by changing the plane electrode material. Electric field plots for various electrode configurations have been obtained by FEM software package. The results indicate that the overall breakdown strength of the gap in the 100 μm to 1000 μm gap range shows a marginal increase up to 400 μm and increases as we approach 100 μm irrespective of the geometry. The variations in the spread as we approach lower limit of 100 μm is attributed to the electrode configuration and/or electrode material. Further work is in progress to study the pre-breakdown behavior. The results are expected to impact MEMS technology.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128666905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However development of adequate protective measures requires a clear knowledge on the lightning current shared by the cables routed on the tower. The literature regarding the current shared by the cables on the towers is rather scarce. The present work has made an attempt to estimate the current shared by the cable for different cable locations on the tower, as well as, for different lengths and relative radii. The experimental, as well as, numerical simulation results are interpreted. The results have provided a better qualitative knowledge for developing suitable protective measures to the cables on communication towers.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130716140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Detection and localization of winding faults is essential for preventing damages to the transformer. This contribution is aimed at locating faults by using the impedance characteristics of the winding. Sweep frequency measurement and analysis is done on a 22 kV continuous disc winding. Methods for determining the extent and location of faults have been developed. The developed method yields a generalized algorithm for locating faults in transformer windings.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133497937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such approximations and assumptions lead to inaccuracies in the calculations and often force cable engineers to use un-necessarily large safety factors and overly conservative designs, this paper is presented using the finite-element method to calculate the steady-state temperatures at various points of the cable system. Using these loss distributions as an input for finite element analysis, more accurate temperature distributions can be obtained. The model is applied to 6.6 kV 3-core underground cables. The temperature distribution has been determined considering convection from the surface.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131737456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various field optimization techniques are in use and this paper presents a new method based on the biogeographically isolated habitats for the optimization of high voltage electrode surface. This new method is known as Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) and is used to obtain the shape of electrode in such a way that it can produce a nearly uniform field distribution along the surface of the electrode. The developed optimization technique is demonstrated with an axisymmetric single phase high voltage electrode. To compute the electric field, Charge Simulation Method (CSM) is used. For better simulation accuracy the sensitive indicators like deviation angle and assignment factor are kept well within the assigned values. These factors affect the simulation accuracy to a greater extent as compare to the statistical data. The new BBO technique helps to keep the maximum stress at a minimum possible value along the high voltage electrode surface.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133853634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A deformation coefficient derived from the measurements is used for this purpose. The mathematical basis and characteristics of the coefficient are elaborated. The method is tested for detecting radial and axial deformations in a real size coil. Two case studies involving radial and axial deformations are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach. The suitability of the method for detecting combined axial and radial deformations is also demonstrated. Finally, the method is validated on a 500 kVA transformer.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122791432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
