This number, particularly in case of interleaved windings, is woefully small rendering the entire exercise pointless. An attempt is described wherein this physical resolution can be enhanced. This is achieved by augmenting the measured driving-point admittance data (of the interleaved winding) with information regarding natural frequencies that are observable, and hence extractable, from an additional measurement of the open-circuited neutral-end voltage spectrum. By this process, a few more additional natural frequencies become available for processing, resulting in a ladder network with an increased physical resolution, i.e., more number of sections. Measurements done on an actual interleaved winding are presented to demonstrate feasibility of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124684593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After initiation of partial discharge into the localized region, it starts damaging the whole insulator with time. Thus detection of PD has become a major challenge for the researchers. This paper presents a method for design of low cost sensor for detection of PD, by detecting the radio frequency (RF) wave with the help of a patch antenna, which is simple and can be manufactured easily. A step by step approach has been described to develop the antenna for the detection of PD. Different analysis as required for the design parameter of the antenna has been simulated by ZELAND IE3D and presented in this paper. An experimental study has also been performed in the laboratory environment to validate the simulated results. The above study shows that, the indigenously made RF sensor is suitable to detect the partial discharge of a high voltage power apparatus and it is a cost effective tool in the field of online monitoring of partial discharge measurement.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133918079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medium voltage motor coils with rated voltage of 4kV are tested using steep front impulse voltages with rise time of 100ns. It has been found that the signature of the ground current is unique for a specific coil and it is voltage independent. Moreover, it has been observed that the recorded turn-to-ground current is more sensitive to turn-to-turn insulation damage than the applied impulse voltage waveform. Hence, by analyzing the line-to-ground leakage current the turn-to-turn insulation failures can be assessed.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131564661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This also applies to power converters which are becoming more and more critical and important parts of the automation systems. That brings an important need for the appropriate solutions for internal diagnostics methods. One of the most important elements of the voltage source converter circuit is the DC capacitor(s). In many of the proposed and available methods the health state of the DC bus capacitor is described by monitoring the equivalent series resistance. This paper presents the method for monitoring the DC link capacitor aging effects. Additionally the article examines the possibility of using the emerging changes in the frequency spectrum of the converter currents for the DC link deterioration. The power system model is simulated in MATLAB Simulink environment with unbalanced loading. The proposed technique requires voltage and current signals to be extracted at the sending and receiving end of the network. The current and voltage signals are processed by ST to produce complex S-matrices. Four types of features are obtained from the absolute value of S-matrix involving simple calculation and less computational time. It is noticed from the simulations that these features enjoy a valuable advantage to be a prime choice as parameters for detection of the type of fault and the affected phase on the basis of some threshold values. The classification rules based on these parameters have been established on the basis of 5220 simulations of fault conditions. The multiple fault conditions have been obtained by changing fault resistance, fault location and fault inception angle. The rules are also tested with signals impregnated by synthetic noise. The proposed scheme has been conveniently programmed in MATLAB and the output result is obtained fast and accurate. A computationally fast version of ST is intended to be implemented in future.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114916609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis of partial discharge characteristics of vegetable oil is very important, before suggesting it as an alternate to mineral oil for liquid insulation in high voltage apparatus. This paper deals with the analysis of partial discharge characteristics of extra virgin olive oil, castor oil and mineral oil. Partial discharge signals were measured with the help of an innovative PD detection system PDBASEII. The PRPD pattern, time domain and frequency domain characteristics of PD pulses of vegetable oils were measured and they were compared with the mineral oil. Inter-turn short circuit fault may develop either due to complete failure of insulation between turns causing direct interturn short circuit fault or due to partial degradation of insulation between turns resulting in incipient insulation fault. Common protection schemes accompanied with induction motors in industrial applications normally fail to detect these faults especially when a minor number of turns are involved in such faults. Detection of these faults at their early stage can substantially reduce the possibilities of serious damage to the motor and consequently financial losses, environmental damage and probable personnel injury etc. Detection of such faults becomes a tricky task when these two different types of faults exhibit identical unbalance in motor supply currents. In the present study, two different series of experiments were carried out on an induction motor which was subjected to operate under direct short circuit fault and also under equivalent incipient insulation fault in stator winding. Using Extended Park's Vector Approach, Park's Vector Modulus (PVM) have been estimated from captured three phase current signals under different operating conditions of the motor. Several fault features were extracted from AC components present in PVMs by applying Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). Then, the fault features were fed to a Simplified Fuzzy Art-Map (SFAM) based classifier which has been found to perform accurately in identifying separately the direct inter-turn short circuit fault levels and equivalent incipient insulation failure conditions.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122350218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
