Nevertheless, they are expected to become an important element also in the monitoring of the dynamic and complex scenario of the future smart distribution grids. The IEEE standard C37.118.1 defines the measurements, the indices and the methods to evaluate synchrophasors, frequency and ROCOF (Rate Of Change Of Frequency) under steady-state and dynamic conditions. The compliance to this standard ensures the interoperability between the PMUs provided from different vendors. The test signals defined in the standard C37.118.1 mainly reflect operating conditions that can occur in the transmission networks. On the other hand, the electrical signals that can be measured in the distribution networks may be different and these different scenarios should be kept into account when a PMU is purposely engineered for the needs of the electric distribution grids. Several international standards describe the voltage characteristics of electricity supplied by distribution systems and consider some operating conditions that are not included in the synchrophasor standard. The aim of this paper is to highlight, through an appropriate test setup, the performance of the PMUs under one of such unexpected conditions, namely the voltage fluctuations that give rise to the disturbance commonly known as light flicker.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131977013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is intended to fill this gap of the standards IEC 61000-4-7 and IEC 61000-4-30, particular with focus on grid measurements. While measurement for a single time instant is well defined, the paper focuses on methods to aggregate the harmonic phase angles in frequency and in time. The application of the methods is illustrated with different simulated and real data. Moreover, the accuracy of the harmonic phase angle measurement and procedures for implementation test are provided.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114499291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first element is the LPIT (Low Power Instrument Transformer), which is the first element of the measurement chain that converts the primary quantities (voltage, current) into a low-value, low power voltage. The second element is the SAMU (Stand Alone Merging Unit), which collects all voltages from LPIT outputs and converts them into digital form, according to the 61850-9-2 protocol. The characteristics of the LPIT and SAMU will be described in the next IEC Standards 61869-6 and 61869-13, respectively. Both Standards are in the final stage of their preparation. In particular, in 61869-13 a Section is dedicated to the method (suitable and comprehensible by system operators) for evaluating the combined standard uncertainty of LPIT-SAMU. In this paper such a method will be presented along with its use and implementation in practical applications.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133853415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This statement is definitely true when amplitude, phase, frequency and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) fluctuate significantly within the observation interval used to estimate them. Unfortunately, these estimation algorithms can be very sensitive to narrow-band disturbances, unless these contributions are explicitly included in the model at the expense of a larger computational complexity. However, if the observation intervals are so short that the waveform parameter variations each of them are minor, then algorithms based on static phasor model can provide accurate results with a reasonably low computational burden. Since the waveform fundamental frequency is a key parameter for power systems monitoring and control, in this paper the estimation accuracy of three classes of state-of-the-art algorithms based on a static signal model is analyzed and compared when only few waveform cycles affected by both steady-state disturbances (e.g. harmonics) and amplitude or phase oscillations are collected.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133662689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally state estimation (SE) of hybrid ac-dc grids has been performed with sequential SE algorithms. In this paper the authors show the inherent problems of the sequential SE algorithms, especially due to the incorrect propagation of the uncertainty of the boundary bus quantities. Instead, a two-step SE accounting for the converter losses is proposed, which updates the boundary results of the ac and dc grids respectively, to improve the accuracy. Tests of a simple hybrid ac-dc grid are presented to show the flaws in the sequential SE algorithms and the benefits of the proposed two-step method. Furthermore the accuracy improvements achievable through the inclusion of the converter losses in the SE algorithm are presented.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122033953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well known that if such a high resolution is not achieved, significant leakage errors may arise and misleading diagnostic information can be obtained from the measured current spectrum. This paper presents a leakage error compensation technique that allows accurate results even when the resolution is limited by the requirement of short observation time. This technique is based on the independent knowledge of the frequencies of the relevant components in the spectrum, which only depend on the power supply frequency and on the motor rotation speed, whose measurements are often available. The proposed method is here applied to the detection of rotor bar breakages and it is tested on simulated motor current waveforms.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122282636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An Algorithm Interface (IA) and a power amplifier connect ROS and DUT. This paper presents the application of the Wideband System Identification (WSI) technique, an online method to measure impedance over a wide frequency range, combined with the Damping Impedance Method (DIM) IA, to improve both accuracy and stability of a PHiL test bench. First, the impedance of the DUT is identified via the WSI. Then, the DIM IA is updated with the measured wide frequency range impedance of the DUT. The application of the method is illustrated for the scenario of a PHiL test of a DC microgrid with a passive load.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125963474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, Phasor Measurement Units are conceived as the key elements of advanced wide area monitoring systems. For these reasons, the design of measurement algorithms able to track amplitude, phase angle and frequency dynamics has been receiving increasing attention in the last years. The Kalman filter, together with a dynamic phasor model, is seen as a promising tool in this context. In this paper, a Taylor Extended Kalman filter formulation that considers the amplitude and phase angle Taylor expansion separately is introduced. A new dynamic model is defined to allow reducing the state space dimension while including also harmonics in a simple way. The performances of the algorithm in terms of both fundamental and harmonic components measurement accuracy are investigated by simulation, considering nonstandard tests inspired by the regulatory norms for distribution systems.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"20 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131923884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IEEE Standard C37.118-2011 and its amendment (IEEE Std) describe compliance tests for static and dynamic conditions, and indicate the relative limits in terms of accuracy. In this context, the paper focuses on the definition and accuracy assessment of the reference synchrophasors in the test conditions dictated by the above IEEE Std. In the first part of the paper, we describe the characterization of a nonlinear least-squares (NL-LSQ) fitting algorithm used to determine the parameters of the reference synchrophasors. We analyse the uniqueness and robustness of the solution provided by the algorithm. We assess its accuracy within the whole range of static tests required by the IEEE Std. In the second part, we discuss the appropriateness of synchrophasor model to evaluate the PMU performance in step test conditions. We compare the proposed algorithm against two synchrophasor estimation algorithms. Finally, we propose a time domain process for the better evaluation of PMU performances in transient conditions.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131980356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new coupling solution is based on the use of the capacitive divider of the voltage detecting system (VDS) as PLC coupler to the MV network. According to IEC 61243-5, VDS are worldwide used to reveal the presence of the mains voltage to ensure the safety of the operators. A proper interface circuit has been invented and patented to couple the PLC signal through the VDS. In this way no dedicated MV PLC coupler is required, thus avoiding the related costs of the coupler, of its installation, and those of the associated temporary service interruption. In this paper, a laboratory characterization of the developed coupling solution is presented in the only standardized band, CENELEC A, reserved for the Energy Utilities in Europe.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114813622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
