This paper demonstrates a new approach for the real-time compression of Sampled Value (SV) data based on the IEC 61869-9 recommendations. This approach applies simple compression rules, yet yields excellent compression performance - typically compressing data to less than half of the original size. This leads to a significant and beneficial reduction in encoding time (in the merging unit producing the SV data) and decoding time (at the end application), as well as the main benefit of reduced Ethernet transmission times resulting from the reduced frame size. As well as reducing the absolute bandwidth requirements in typical applications, this has system-wide benefits due to reducing Ethernet queuing delays and the consequent network jitter. The approach has been validated on a real-time platform to accurately measure all contributions to the end-to-end delay. This work will help enable low-latency and bandwidth-sensitive applications involving the SV protocol, such as phasor measurement units and wide-area protection.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131293056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A particularly useful feature of the boxcar filter is the ease of placement of (and tuning of) regular filter zeros, simply by defining (and varying) the time length of the boxcar window. This is of particular use within power system measurements to eliminate harmonics, inter-harmonics and image components from Fourier, Park and Clarke transforms, and other measurements related to power flow, power quality, protection, and converter control. However, implementation of the filter in real-time requires care, to minimise the execution time, provide the best frequency-domain response, know (exactly) the group delay, and avoid cumulative numerical precision errors over long periods. This paper reviews the basic properties of the boxcar filter, and explores different digital implementations, which have subtle differences in performance and computational intensity. It is shown that generally, an algorithm using trapezoidal integration and interpolation has the most desirable characteristics.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124688391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power hardware-in-the-loop simulations form a cost effective approach to accurately capture the (dynamic) system behaviour. This paper describes the development of a data acquisition and processing system that enables power hardware-in-the-loop simulation of a real physical feeder within a larger simulated three-phase low voltage network simulated in real-time. With the aid of the data acquisition and processing system, the performance of newly developed monitoring and control applications can be assessed and evaluated in terms of accuracy, speed and effectiveness. To this extend, the paper shows how the data acquisition and processing system is implemented and discusses the possibilities that it creates for verifying newly developed applications for distribution grid automation.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132272537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different kinds of resistor designs are evaluated for the application in high-voltage dividers above 300 kV. To this end, the temperature behavior and voltage behavior as well as the short-term stability of three constructed dividers were investigated. The results of this paper will be used for further investigations on a modular setup of high-voltage DC dividers. The modular 10 kV submodules have been designed for the use of such dividers within the scope of the “Smart Modular Switchgear” project (SMS), which is funded by the German government.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124804837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, the availability of smart meter data in distribution systems has provided an opportunity to improve the observability. As for the medium-voltage (MV) distribution system, there is an increasing interest to use the spatially aggregated smart meter data from low-voltage (LV) feeders in the state estimation, instead of inaccurate pseudo-measurements. However, good performance of state estimators requires good knowledge of the available measurements, in terms of both the mean value and the associated uncertainty. Hence, this paper intends to pave a new way of utilizing and aggregating smart meter data for the purpose of state estimation in the MV distribution system, in a concrete and reliable manner. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified on the IEEE European Low Voltage Test Feeder with a set of real-world smart meter data. Simulation results show that the utilization of aggregated smart meter data is able to improve the accuracy of load modelling of three-phase transformers.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117032658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this field, one of the most promising enabling technologies is synchrophasor measurements, which require the estimation of the parameters of sinusoids, namely amplitude, frequency and phase. In the context of synchrophasor measurements many algorithms have been proposed, which are based on the computation of Discrete Fourier Transform, on the digital phase-locked loop, the Kalman filter, estimation of sinusoid parameters in noisy environment. In this paper we propose a phasor estimation algorithm based on the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) assumption. We show that such an assumption reduces the computational complexity of the algorithm in terms of products per observation window. Amplitude can be estimated as sample-mean of the sequence of magnitude of the observed samples, thus requiring just sums, and frequency and phase can be estimated sequentially from the observed phases only. Monte-Carlo simulations show that the proposed algorithm achieves the Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds for amplitude, frequency and phase and estimated total vector error is well below the limits prescribed in standard in both static and dynamic conditions.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129205592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, the use of Distributed Energy Storage Systems (DESSs) has been proposed to limit the impact of renewable power plants on the distribution grid. The presence of a large number of production plants distributed along the grid, which are able to interact between them, requires the Distribution System Operator (DSO) to adopt a proper monitoring system. To allow such an implementation, a communication and a computing architecture able to virtualize several renewable power plants installed in the same area is described in the present work. The proposed architecture can simplify the monitoring from the DSO, using the so-called Virtual Power Plant (VPP) approach. The proposed architecture has been deployed in the area of the Campus of the University of Brescia, Italy, for the monitoring of two photovoltaic (PV) plants and two different Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs). The implemented infrastructure makes use of several technologies, such as IEEE 802.11ac and Long Term Evolution (LTE). The characterization of the communication infrastructure highlights the feasibility of the proposed approach (the latency is less than 20 ms in the worst case over IEEE 802.11ac links with a traffic load of 80 Mbit/s). To show the performance of such a solution, the data collected from a system composed by a PV field (64 kWp) and a Li-Ion storage system (25 kWh) has been reported.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134400131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The LVT has been designed to be capable of being mass produced. The OCS requires no power supply and is interrogated remotely. Furthermore, it can be multiplexed in series or in parallel, allowing for multiple current measurements at different sites to be made by the same interrogator. The LVT and OCS have been tested against the accuracy requirements of the IEC 60044-8 standards for electronic current transformers (ECTs) both by direct signal injection, and by primary current injection when interfaced with a conventional PX class CT. The LVT and OCS are shown to meet the stringent 5P protection class requirements and also the additional requirements of the Transient Protection Electronic (TPE) class.","PeriodicalId":290041,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114295121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
