The objectives of this study were to evaluate the timing and activation intensity of shoulder muscles during handball penalty throwing in individuals with shoulder pain and in control subjects. Materials and Methods: Using BTS FREE EMG 300 system with bipolar surface electrodes, the timing (onset) and intensity of the activation of the shoulder muscles were measured including upper trapezius, anterior, middle and posterior deltoid, latissimus dorsi, pectoralis major, supraspinatus and triceps during penalty throwing. Multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for between group comparisons with the significance level P< 0.05. Results: The activation intensity of upper trapezius and latissimus dorsi muscles in the healthy individuals were about 50.74% and 43.42% higher than in patients. Middle deltoid in healthy individuals was about 38.05% smaller than that in patients. In control group, supraspinatus muscle started earlier (23.5 ms) than the shoulder motion initiation. Triceps muscle was activated about 18.5 ms later than shoulder motion initiation. In patients, supraspinatus muscle started sooner (11 ms) and triceps brachialis muscle started later than the other muscles (22.16 ms). Conclusion: The coordination of shoulder muscles i.e. the onset and intensity of muscle activity is disturbed in the patient group during throwing. Hence, strength and stretching programs are recommended for athletes to reduce the risk of shoulder pain syndrome. The rehabilitation program can be focused on modifying the pattern of activity in upper trapezius, supraspinatus, latissimus dorsi and deltoid muscles in addition to pain control in the rehabilitation centers.","PeriodicalId":289923,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Rehabilitation Sciences","volume":"22 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116643201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the effects of artificial turf on the risk of injuries are still debated in literature and published papers have reported contradictory data. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the risk of injury on artificial turf and natural grass among young Iranian football players Materials and Methods: In this study, 35 teams (980 players) from the youth league of Iran participated. All soccer-related injuries, number of hours of practice sessions and matches, and type of grass during the study period were reported prospectively by the coaches and medical staff. Injuries which occurred during exercise or matches and due to which the player could not take part in the exercise or match of the following day were recorded. The medical team and coaches of both teams were asked to record the players’ injuries in the related form. Results: During the 7 months of the study, 26000 hours of player exposure and 118 soccer-related injuries we recorded. Poisson distribution showed that the overall injury rate on natural grass (4.4 injuries/1000 hours) was significantly lower than the overall injury rate on artificial turf (7.64 injuries/1000 hours) (P < 0.05). Knee (P < 0.05) and ankle injuries incidence rates (P < 0.05) on artificial turf were significantly higher than on natural grass. Overuse injuries on artificial turf were twice that on natural grass (P < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the study results, it is suggested that coaches and young players be more careful about the higher incidence of injuries on artificial grass and measures be taken to prevent injuries on artificial turf.","PeriodicalId":289923,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Rehabilitation Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125209225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between the risk of knee osteoarthritis among the elderly and age, body mass index (BMI), education, depression, physical activity, and gender of the elderly. Materials and Methods: The participants consisted of 220 elderly individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis and 220 healthy elderly individuals. The subjects were selected using voluntary sampling methods. The data collection tools included a demographic characteristics form and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: The relationship of all variables with the risk of knee osteoarthritis was investigated through logistic regression analysis of a progressive model considering odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI). There was a significant relationship between age and gender and the risk of developing osteoarthritis (P < 0.05); women were more susceptible to knee osteoarthritis than men (P < 0.05). The prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher among the elderly with knee osteoarthritis than the healthy subjects. Level of depression had a significant correlation with the risk of knee osteoarthritis (P < 0.05). A significant association was observed between levels of physical activity and the risk of knee osteoarthritis and the number of inactive elderly individuals in the knee osteoarthritis group was higher than the healthy elderly group. With increase in the level of education, the possibility of developing knee osteoarthritis decreased and those with an education level of lower than diploma had a greater chance of developing knee osteoarthritis (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Gender, obesity, depression, lack of physical activity, weight gain, education of lower than diploma, and lack of insight and knowledge were risk factors for susceptibility to knee osteoarthritis.","PeriodicalId":289923,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Rehabilitation Sciences","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126518279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consideration of the mental health of parents of exceptional children is important due to the psychological, social, and financial burden of care and increased care burden on families of children with intellectual disabilities. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive-correlation study. The subjects consisted of 200 parents of students in special schools of Golestan Province, Iran, in 2016. The participants were selected through multistage random sampling method. A demographic information questionnaire, the Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and Elmstahl’s Caregiver Burden Scale were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS software at the significance level of P < 0.05. Results: In this study, the resilience and burden of care scores of parents of children with intellectual disabilities were 51.86 ± 17.27 and 56.89 ± 14.27, respectively. Simple linear regression test showed a significant relationship between resilience and burden of care [B = 0.32, Beta = 0.39, P < 0.01, %95 CI: -6 (-4.2 to -8.1)]; with 1 degree decrease in resilience, the burden of care score will increase 0.3 points. Conclusion: In this study, the burden of care was higher and resilience was lower than average and resilience of parents of students with intellectual disabilities could be increased with reduction in the amount of burden of care. Among the predictive variables, the effect of income on the burden of care was evident to a greater extent in parents of children with intellectual disabilities compared to other variables. This indicates that the burden of care can be reduced and resilience can be increased by raising income levels and economic well-being. Therefore, it is suggested that the necessary economic and counseling measures be taken to reduce the burden of care.","PeriodicalId":289923,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Rehabilitation Sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129558085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analyzing the energy expenditure in people who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders provides objective evidence to measure individual’s disability and the effect of therapeutic interventions. Present study investigated the effect of various severities of knee osteoarthritis on mechanical energy of lower extremities. Materials and Methods: 48 women aged between 40-70 years were purposefully divided into mild, moderate and sever osteoarthritis and healthy control group according to simple X-ray features of their knee joints. The participants walked at their convenient self-selected speed to collect five clean trials. The data were recorded using a motion analysis system and a 3-dimentional model of lower extremity segments was developed from motion capture data using visual 3-D software. Mechanical energy of lower extremity was calculated using this model. Results: The study groups were significantly different in age (P ≤ 0.001) and walking speed (P ≤ 0.001). One-way analysis of variances (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey test revealed that there was significant difference between the study groups regarding mechanical energy. However, univariate general linear models with adjustments to age and to walking speed were developed; in addition, a bivariate general linear model was adjusted to age and walking speed. All the models confirmed that the differences were not imposed by the severity of knee osteoarthritis. Conclusion: It seems that increase in mechanical energy of lower extremity in subjects with knee osteoarthritis intensifies with the progression of the disease; this is not a direct effect of the level of joint deterioration but is an indirect effect of older age and lower walking speed in subjects suffering from more advanced knee osteoarthritis.","PeriodicalId":289923,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Rehabilitation Sciences","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125514770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
