Two distinct problem areas are investigated. First, Bayesian probability theory is used to derive an expression for an enhanced discrimination waveform which, in the two-target case, maximizes the log odds in favor of one target over the other. Numerical results are provided which show that best discrimination, in the simple two-target case, occurs when the incident waveform has its energy concentrated near the frequency where the difference in the impulse response of the two targets reaches a maximum. Second, probability theory is used to discriminate among a set of targets based on their high-range-resolution radar returns. It is explained how the nonuniform characteristics in amplitude and in phase of a 2D array can be corrected by using a separate assessment of the array with a plane wave illumination. The calibration file is obtained by measuring a reference electric field provided by the ESTEC compact antenna test range. An advanced technique has been developed for the computation of physical optics backscattering from large, complex targets over multiple frequency bands with unprecedented speed. It takes full advantage of the power of the present (and future) high-performance graphics engines for surface rendering and shadowing. This method has been implemented with a first-generation code labeled VISAGE (Visual Investigation of Scattering in an Advanced Graphics Environment) on the Silicon Graphics Iris 4D series workstations. The computation throughput has been shown to be essentially independent of the target complexity and the desired number of frequencies. These S-matrices are then cascaded together with those of the intervening dielectric layers to form an overall S-matrix. At the input plane of the polarizer, the electric field vector of a linearly polarized incident plane of the polarizer, the electric field vector of a linearly polarized incident plane wave is inclined at 45 degrees to the meanderline line axis so that either a TE (transverse electric) or a TM (transverse magnetic) mode is present. The polarizer then provides the necessary coupling between or conversion into the TE and TM modes so that, at the output plane, a circularly polarized wave exists, consisting of a TE00 and TM00 mode, all other modes being evanescent. The S-matrix of the layered structure describes this mode conversion. By attaching an optimizer to the analysis module, a synthesis program is obtained. Since it is usually installed in a pager and used very close to a human body, its effect against the human body has to be taken into consideration. For simplicity, the surface of the human body may be replaced by a conducting reflector. The authors experimentally and theoretically examine the influence of a reflector on the input impedance of a small loop antenna. Calculated results are obtained by using the method of moments and compared with experimental data. The validity of the method of moments is confirmed. Then, using the method, a positive effect of the human body on the actual gain of the antenna is found analytically. Depending on the asymptotic characteristics of the response function in the frequency domain, expanding the time scale and shifting the origin of time often result in accelerated convergence of the numerical Bromwich integral.
