Incidents that lead to power supply interruptions can occur, and it is important that a quick response is given by the company responsible for restoring the service. This work proposes a model for predicting these incidents, aiming to assist energy distribution companies in improving the quality and agility of their service and, consequently, avoiding the application of sanctions by the regulatory agencies. The forecast is based on the application of support vector machines for regression. It considers historical data of incidents occurred in four regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Cabo Frio, Macaé, Niteroí and Resende), as well as climatic data from the same regions, both collected in the period between 2017 and 2018. To improve the performance of the model, an automatic feature selection technique was applied, based on correlation matrices. Values of mean absolute percentage error were around 15% for three of the four regions studied, sufficient for the model to assist in the strategic decision-making process by the company. Also, all results obtained by the complete model are 30% better than those obtained without feature selection, which highlights the importance of this work.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131148902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, for a cleaner environment, it is better to charge the EV using clean power such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, PV generating an insignificant sum of power which is not sufficient to apply in a specific application. To solve this issue, it is essential to improve the energy conversion efficiency by the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). In the literature, various algorithms have been used to enhance the MPPT efficiency which still have different limitations. Therefore, this study is developed to improve the MPPT for solar car system charge using Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) as the input of the voltage and current of PV systems is variable. Moreover, to overcome the FLC limitations and enhance the performance of the controller, the FLC-based Backtracking Search Algorithm (BSA) optimization method is developed for harvesting maximum power from the solar panel. The power and voltage output of MPPT with and without the optimization is compared to show the optimized controller efficiency. In comparison to the controller with the optimization method, the efficiency is increased significantly (10.36% at 10s for power) than the non-optimized method. In sum, the results have shown the ability of FLC based-BSA optimization method to enhance the efficiency of MPPT for solar-powered cars linking to the swift alteration of insolation due to the dynamic motion of the vehicle.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131400557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characteristics of such a disaster is high-intensity but low-probability event (HILP). How to survive such disasters and increase system resilience in power systems have become an important issue. This paper used a model about line faults to simulate the line failure probability when wind speeds reach up to a certain level, and used a quantitative method to calculate power system resilience. Then, a high resilience was obtained using different precautionary strategies on power system operations, and the differences between the original operation and improved operations were compared. In addition to resilience assessments, this paper also considers economic value (EV) analyses, which makes the system operators to understand whether these preventive measures have a high economic value to be implemented, and to understand under what circumstances the system operators need to perform appropriate actions to obtain the most benefits. This study used the actual load data of Taiwan's power system during typhoons to analyze both resilience assessments and EV evaluation. The simulation results can provide power system operators with more flexible and cost-optimized suggestions to reduce the risk caused by climate factors that are like extreme weather events.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"230 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133579220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power distribution systems, especially those passing through forest regions, are exposed and highly vulnerable to wildfires. This paper applies a general formulation to enhance the operational resilience of power distribution networks equipped with renewable energy resources (RESs), e.g., wind and solar energy, micro turbines (MTs) as well as energy storage systems (ESSs) when exposed to progressive wildfires. The wildfire event is characterized comprehensively and the dynamic line rating (DLR) of overhead distribution branches is used to model the impacts of wildfires on distribution power lines. A scenario-based optimization formulation is applied to tackle the system prevailing uncertainties. The applied framework is evaluated on the IEEE 33-node test system and the numerical results reveal the promising efficacy of the methodology.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127569257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this case, due to the long cable used for the converter-to-motor connection, several unwanted high-frequency phenomena are generated. In this context, a new configuration for motor drive systems was proposed, in which the rectifier is kept in its original position and the inverter bridge is installed close to the motor terminals, being the long cable used as a DC transmission line. Since this environment is always more hostile and can compromise the inverter lifetime, new concerns regarding the system reliability arise, despite the various technical-economic advantages from this new configuration. In this way, this paper presents a comprehensive comparison of commercially widely accepted multilevel inverter topologies, searching for the best technical features for the aforementioned DC transmission applicability/feasibility. Simulations were performed assessing several essential quantities/indexes, with major focus on reliability. Then, a discussion was made seeking those sets that could minimize the implementation costs and improve the system reliability, concerning the IGBTs and the Metalized Film (MFC) and Aluminum Electrolytic (AEC) capacitors of the DC link.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127624704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent trends show that large-scale outages due to damage and impacts to the distribution system resulting from HILP events are rising. When the distribution system sees large-scale blackouts, generation units with black start capability are required to restore out-of-service generation units and subsequently energize the system. However, during the event’s progression, the black start process needs to be hardened to ensure the successful restoration of the system and maximize resiliency. This work introduces a resilience metrics-based black start restoration algorithm that determines the most resilient cranking path with the consideration of distribution network topological robustness, event progression, energy resource information, expected damage and impact, cold load pickup, and load priority. We present a framework for the planning and operational decision support in selecting the resultant cranking path and the complete energization of the active electric distribution system. Resiliency metrics consider multiple factors impacting the ability to supply critical loads. The algorithm is validated using the IEEE 123 node system to show the practicality of the proposed approach in enabling system resilience.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"452 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132740684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of solar energy based generation with six EV battery spots, three phase grid and one battery bank, which can be swap when any spot is under fault condition or under maintenance. This CS spearheads PV source to battery (S2B), PV source to grid (S2G), battery to grid (B2G) and grid to battery (G2B) modes. A novel current controller is developed for the grid integrated mode of operation of the CS using an improved proportionate normalized least mean square (ILP-PNLMS) adaptive filter. It improves the sparse channel estimation strength using the improved zero attracting term to estimate the fundamental active load current component. To eliminate the effect of the disturbances and the overshoot and undershoot in DC link voltage quickly and accurately, the cascaded second order sliding mode control (CSOSMC) is implemented using the linear extended state observer. This controller is compared with the conventional controller. This CS with the novel ILP-PNLMS controller is simulated and also tested in hardware in loop-based experimental results.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133127414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
