This research article presents a comprehensive investigative analysis of the distributed generation (DG) impacts on the protection performance of the distribution network. Various protection coordination case studies have been analyzed under different operating conditions by varying the DG penetration level or the fault conditions to highlight the potential risks of the protection networks. The severity of the risks is evaluated by considering the DG locations, protection settings, and fault types/impedance parameters on a standardized IEEE 13 node test feeder. The subsequent protection hazards are examined for the mutual coordination of the overcurrent (OC) relays, auto-reclosers, and series fuses in distribution networks. Furthermore, the impacts of DGs/PDs types are assessed on the nuisance tripping of the protection networks and results are reported.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128840482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the field measurement and characteristic analysis of neutral current, this paper presents the principle of stray current from traction power supply system invading AC network. To mitigate the stray current at the neutral point, a capacitor and a converter are connected in series to block the DC and harmonic currents respectively. And the influence of the series connection with the neutral point on the relay protection is discussed, and based on this, a reliable and reasonable bypass protection unit composed of the mechanical switch and the electronic switch is configured to ensure the safe operation of the system. Smart inverter (SI) functionalities can be configured to provide efficient voltage regulation and reactive power support in ADNs. Distribution grid optimal power flow (DOPF)-based models are typically employed to obtain setpoints of inverters and/or legacy control devices. However, existing works do not consider Volt-VAr and Volt-Watt droop functionalities of SI in a system-wide optimization framework, making the inverter dispatch solutions potentially unsuitable at the local inverter controller level. Therefore, in this work, we propose the inclusion of local piecewise Volt-VAr and Volt-Watt droop functions (as per the IEEE-1547) as constraints in the DOPF formulation. We adopt a well-known LinDistFlow version of DOPF and with the inclusion of piecewise Volt-Watt and Volt-VAr droop functions, the resulting DOPF becomes a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Simulations on a 730-node MV/LV feeder with 20 utility-scale inverters validate the efficacy and scalability of the proposed formulation. The simulation results confirm the capability of SI droop functions to provide reactive power and voltage regulation support in ADNs.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114973172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into the power grids, future power networks will be more volatile to power oscillations, generation-demand imbalance, voltage fluctuations, and frequency oscillations caused by the intermittence nature of these sources and lack of system inertia. This paper introduces a multifunctional two-stage grid-connected PV power system based on detailed mathematical modeling and innovative control techniques to provide efficient ancillary services to meet the grid code requirements and to overcome the issues of photovoltaic generation. The simulation results show that the designed multifunctional PV power system is capable of operating at MPPT or suboptimal operation to ensure the ancillary services of ramp-rate control, active and reactive power control, frequency regulation, harmonic filtering, and ac voltage regulation, under varying operating and atmospheric conditions.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121893734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regarding the constructive impact of multilevel converters on the performance of FACTSs and APFs, this paper proposes Boost Packed E-Cell (BPEC) as an affordable and reliable compact multilevel converter for the power ancillary services. BPEC is able to generate a voltage waveform with either 9 or 11 levels using three dc capacitors and eight semiconductor switches. The boost operation empowers BPEC to dominate the grid voltage using low power dc-links. Horizontal expansion of the capacitors in BPEC reduces the dc voltage measurements and remarkably enhances the converter reliability. For the case study, BPEC is investigated in the form of a single-phase Compact Active Power Filter (CAPF) when reactive/nonlinear loads are connected to grid. Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCSMPC) is also dedicated to assure the desired performance of BPEC in the CAPC application. The validation tests performed by dSPACE and MATLAB prove successful active damping of the load current harmonics at the point of common coupling.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124043442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the motor can operate in generation mode due to the release of potential energy from the mechanical load. Typical BPU has a fixed balance block, which is inadequate for matching the continuously varying loading conditions (i.e. oil density, oil level …etc.). Consequently, it overburdens the possibility of energy saving. To overcome the aforementioned industrial challenges, this study proposes an energy-saving strategy, that combines real-time dynamic balance adjustment (DBA) and auto-tracking voltage regulation control (VRC). The proposed approach is based on analyzing the BPMS’s torque components and its characteristics. The developed energy-saving technology (EST) relays on mechanical and electrical sensors. The current operational status of the system is defined using the remote sensor’s readings. The proposed EST was realized experimentally on an in-field 37-kW BPMS standard test platform. The results showed that the proposed EST can achieve 15% energy saving compared to the conventional BPMS.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125940150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, particle charging and motion in an electric field under UV irradiation were elucidated. When the particle layers deposited on an insulating substrate were irradiated with UV light in a downward electric field, positive charges generated by photoemission were distributed within the particle layers. Subsequently, by reversing the direction of the electric field, particles in the top layer were positively charged and levitated. The flux of the levitated particles increased with an increase in the strength of the electric field (downward and upward). The number of agglomerated particles in the levitation region increased but the particle charge decreased with an increase in the upward electric field strength. These results can be explained via the mechanism of particle levitation.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129844586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clustering-based forecasting method are commonly used to generate accurate monthly electricity consumption forecasting results. This paper focuses on the problem that the existing clustering-based monthly electricity consumption forecasting methods perform clustering and forecasting independently, causing that the joint optimization of two steps cannot be achieved. The reason for this situation is that the target of current clustering algorithms, maximizing individual similarity in a group, is not consistent with the final target of improving the forecasting accuracy. To solve the above problem, the greedy clustering-based monthly electricity consumption forecasting model (GCMECF) is proposed in this paper. Its clustering step takes improving the overall predictability as the optimization target, which is closely related to the forecasting target. In this way, with matching targets, the joint optimization of clustering and forecasting can be achieved. Meanwhile, the selection of the optimal number of clusters is decided based on the forecasting performance under multiple clustering scenarios. The case study verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method via a realworld dataset.","PeriodicalId":289566,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting (IAS)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128293587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
