It consists in the strengthening of nationalist and xenophobic sentiments, a demagogic and deceitful campaign in mass media, which has already led quite often to “populist upheavals”. \u0000Main body: As examples of such already realized changes, the authors mention Brexit and its consequences, as well as the government of the victorious political faction in Poland. The authors are worried that such upheavals may soon occur in other countries. The authors attempt to characterize the repeated sequence of events leading to such transformations and determine what can be done in a situation of potentiated xenophobia and populist arguments. They emphasize what should be better understood and explained to citizens. They also discuss the implementation of appropriate changes in education and the promotion of cultural creations. \u0000Short conclusion: The most important actions that are able to suppress the emerging populist movement, as it seems should aim to (a) immunize the entire population against the deceitful arguments and (b) suspend the spread of these false arguments in mass media. The essence of these actions should consist on better understanding of the processes and in the implementation of effective changes in education at all levels, as well as on targeted cultural activity. This is also a challenge for actions in the field of public health.

Life expectancy has been rising steadily, and this recent research results has made headlines in the BBC, CNN, and all other top news channels around the world. As such this is quite commendable for life expectancy to be moving up so sZiNl across many parts of the world, but on the other hand to some healthcare administrators and planners it may be a cause for some consternation as well. For sure, this increase in life expectancy will place additional responsibilities and would stretch the available resources, unless we plan to upgrade and increase our present resources. Ðere would be factors which cannot be ignored, like financiall viability, easily accessibility, adequate, prompt, round the clock, sustainable, result oriented, caring and satisfactory management of morbidities in the elderly population. Making the situation somewhat more diU¹cult would be that all of those morbidities would come overlapped and intertwined with increasing frailty and senescence as well, where drastic measures cannot be undertaken, thereby leaving little room for maneuvering. Going by this news, future really holds great responsibilities and even higher expectations from Geriatricians and Gerontologists. Lest we miss out, it’s definitel a time to brace up and start preparing to meet the demands, expectations, and the challenges ahead. Ðe year 2030 is not too far from now when we start seeing the 90 mark being crossed and therefore suitable gearing up and restructuring would be necessary while we still have the time to face the challenges and shortfalls. It will be a time for integrated care, with special emphasis on multi-morbidity, avoidance of poly-pharmacy, and of physical and cognitive impairment.

They present here a brief review of these findings. \u0000The authors propose next a practical working procedure for the application of this form of psychotherapy by trained nurses. Anthropometric variables (BMI, weight, height, waist circumference), body composition measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), the 400 meters walking test, the short physical performance battery, the physical activity level with the PASE questionnaire, handgrip, isometric strength and power of the lower limbs with dynamometer were evaluated at baseline and three months follow-up. All subjects were involved in brisk walking sessions, 1 and ½ h per day on 2 days each week under the supervision of a qualified physical education instructor for 12 weeks. The physical activity intensity has been calculated on the basis of the Borg Scale (RPE scale=13 “somewhat hard”). \u0000Results: At 3 months of follow-up, a reduction in waist circumference, total and percentage fat mass, an improvement of peak torque and power of lower limbs and in all the performance test administered was observed. In addition, dividing the population into two sub-groups based on the frequency to walking groups, it was observed that the group with higher attendance presented a significantly greater increase of muscle peak torque, power and specific power values. Moreover subjects with greater attendance showed significantly higher reduction of the time to perform the 400 meters test. \u0000Conclusions: Moderate aerobic exercise can improve muscle strength, physical performance and body composition. Dividing the study population into two groups on the basis of greater or lesser participation in the walk groups, the group with frequency percentage higher than 70% showed a significantly greater improvement in peak torque, power and the specific power, suggesting a dose-dependent effect.

Of these, 38.8% were female. \u0000Handgrip strength and physical performance by using the short physical performance battery (SPPB) were assessed at admission and before the discharge. In all subjects Barthel index and mini nutritional assessment (MNA) were also evaluated. \u0000Results: A significant worsening in walking speed, chair stands test and handgrip strength performance was observed. On the contrary the study population showed an improvement in the Barthel index. No significant differences between males and females in performance and muscle strength loss were observed. The chair stand test performance worsens further in malnourished patients. \u0000Conclusion: our data suggests that during hospitalization elderly patients experience a loss of performance and muscle strength, with no differences between males and females. Subjects with score indicative of malnutrition or at risk for malnutrition presented a chair stand test performance worsening significantly greater than subjects with normal nutritional status.
