Muscle mass was assessed by bio impedance analysis and muscle strength by handheld dynamometer. Main study factors included physical exercise, nutritional status, co-morbidities, anabolic and catabolic hormones (ghrelin, insulinlike growth factor1, testosterone, insulin and cortisol), and inflammatory markers (interleukin-6, C-reactive protein). Other study variables included sociodemographic characteristics, chronic medication, functional capacity, a complete blood count and basic biochemical analyses. \u0000Results: A total of 324 persons were recruited: 170 men and 154 women, mean age 80.1 years. Muscle mass was independently associated with age, physical activity, obesity, gastro-duodenal ulcer and interleukin-6 levels in men and with physical activity, obesity, insulin-like growth factor 1 levels and fiber intake in women. In men, muscle strength was independently associated with previous falls, number of medications, dyspepsia and good nutrition and, in women, with age, physical activity, arthritis, diabetes, number of medications and cortisol levels. \u0000Conclusions: Physical activity and obesity are the main factors associated with muscle mass in community-dwelling elderly men and women. Sex differences identified in certain biomarkers associated with loss of muscle mass and strength would suggest a more important role for inflammation in men and for anabolic/catabolic imbalances in women.

Recent study demonstrated that a CAPG variant was associated with a rare fallopian tube tumor, albeit with a small sample size. The present study aimed to determine the association of CAPG variants with cancer susceptibility. \u0000Methods: Four non-synonymous single nucleotide variations (NSVs), rs2229668 (p.V41I), rs117284777 (p.K227R), rs200233412 (p.A229T) and rs6886 (p.R335H), in CAPG were retrieved from genotyping, by an exome-chip, in 2,317 consecutive autopsy cases (1,284 men and 1,033 women, mean age 80.7 years), in which the presence or absence of cancer was verified pathologically. The association of CAPG variants with presence of cancer and with different types of cancer was determined. Interaction with smoking was also determined. \u0000Results: There were 1,446 cancer-bearing and 897 cancer-free subjects. Among four SNVs, only p.R335H (c.1004C>T) was associated with the presence of cancer (adjusted OR=1.49, 95% CI=1.23-1.81, P=5.08 × 10-5). The association was found in men (adjusted OR=1.64, 95% CI=1.26-2.14, P=2.25 × 10-4), but not in women. Investigation with different types of cancer revealed that gastric cancer showed a positive association (adjusted OR=1.61, 95% CI=1.16-2.24, P=0.005) in men. The effect size of CAPG variants showed no difference between smokers and nonsmokers. \u0000Conclusions: Our study suggests that a non-synonymous SNV of CAPG, p.R335H, affects cancer susceptibility in men without interaction with smoking habit and that the SNV is associated with gastric cancer in men.

Thiol peroxidases of glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) family utilize reduced glutathione (GSH) as a reductant. Early studies recognized that plasma selenium-dependent Gpx (Gpx3) possesses a wide thiol specificity. Our previous study statistically confirmed the ability of rat Gpx3 to utilize reduced homocysteine (Hcy-SH) instead of GSH. Thus, GSH can be completely replaced by Hcy-SH in a reaction mixture, that allows to determine Gpx3 activity with higher selectivity. In present study, the hypothesis of the age-associated decline of thiol peroxidase activity in rat plasma was tested using Hcy-SH as a thiol substrate. The enzymatic activity in 23-24-month-old rats was significantly lower than in 6-8-month-old rats (p=0.0012, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test). These data are in agreement with the results obtained by other authors revealed the diminished total Gpx activity in serum of 24- month-old rats. The progressive aging-associated decline of Gpx activity in human plasma is also known. Gpx3 activity in plasma may be an appropriate indicator of aging process due to its relatively high value in adult, not aged animals and humans, and its subsequent prominent aging-specific decline.

An analytical cross-sectional study was aimed to identify the factors associated with insomnia among elderly. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of 64 elderlies of Ward No. 2 of Karyabinayak Municipality, Lalitpur. Data collection was done from 18th to 30th of September 2016 by using structured interview schedule related to socio-demographic variables and Pittsburgh Insomnia Rating Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics namely chi-square test was used to analyze data using SPSS software version 16 and findings were presented on the relevant tables and figures. The findings of the study revealed that 40.6% of the respondents have insomnia. Furthermore, there is significant association of health problems during night sleep with insomnia (p=0.003). However, there is no significant association of age, gender, marital status, educational status, current working status, financial dependency, disease and medicine use at present with insomnia. Based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that insomnia is present among less than half elderly and the elderly who have health problems during night sleep have insomnia. Therefore, the awareness program regarding insomnia should be raised for early detection and appropriate management in order to decrease sleep related health problems and improve quality of life.
