This aspect of the legislation will potentially have an important impact upon the future 'End of Life' (EoL) processing of much WEEE. Active Disassembly using Smart Materials (ADSM) has been proven to have applicability in self-dismantling, nondestructive and rapid disassembly of small electronic products. This paper investigates the technical feasibility of removing LCD screens from IT communication products using ASDM technology. In this paper an option is suggested to cleanly separate LCD screens from printed circuit boards, utilizing an LCD bracket made from 'shape memory polymer'. The case study products employed are Nokia Japanese J-Phones. Demonstration experiments with initial results are presented, and future developments discussed. SMB glass transformation temperatures (Tg) and time efficiency in disassembly are considered.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. Now almost fully standardized by the ISO 14020 series, these voluntary environmental claims appear as eco-labels and a variety of environmental declarations. This paper discusses a project underway in collaboration with Denmark's largest telecommunication services provider, Tele Danmark A/S, which also sells telecommunication electronics from a chain of stores throughout Denmark. The project is aimed at establishing a green procurement framework and to install environmental product declarations as a green marketing tool, in a way that links these two disciplines together into a streamlined information flow.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. While the intent of environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) is clear, less transparent is the way the government will actually implement these guidelines. This paper raises questions about the basis upon which to measure environmental preferability of products and services. The telecommunications industry serves as a case study of systems analysis and supply chain management decisions, and substitution of competing and functionally equivalent or better, environmentally more preferable services (e.g., work-related travel vs. telecommuting). As DfE and LCA are concepts with various practical approaches, we suggest a framework to analyze various approaches to determine the environmental preference of products and services. Comprehensive LCAs of the environmental costs and benefits of substitute telecommunications services are needed, including economy-wide, supply chain effects.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. Workstation Petri net (WPN) and product Petri net (PPN) are proposed for hierarchical and modular modeling in order to derive the optimal disassembly path with the maximal end-of-life (EOL) value. Resource Petri net (RPN) is introduced to deal with the demanufacturing facilities. The proposed methodology and algorithms are demonstrated through the disassembly of personal computers in IFDS.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. One successful alternative is a modular evaluation concept. The spectrum of companies in electronics-from the small, specialized company where one person handles all environmental affairs to the global players with their own environmental research departments-requires a flexible mixture of basic research and reliable data generation, contract R&D, and the transfer of results and methods into management workflows. Several electronic systems mainly from information and communications products have been assessed with a different number of modules, depending on the expected or necessary width and depth of results. For all examples optimization strategies and specific improvements will be shown.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. These conditions make environmental assessments even more complicated. The approach of a model based life cycle assessment (LCA)/life cycle engineering (LCE) means managing complex process models from the basis of a background database. Despite of the demanding conditions of electronics industry this offers the opportunity to provide transparent and summarized results with an acceptable time effort. It is realized by forming flexible modules with parameter variation that show already modeled parts and subassemblies which can be chosen from the database. These modules that call be combined like a tool kit will be exemplary demonstrated by the LCA of a copier machine. The parameter variation offers the possibility to adapt the modules to the specific product properties and subassembly modifications as far as they are given. Also the interactions within the different life cycle phases can be quickly modeled and analyzed. Even with no detailed material information of single parts and subassemblies the model based approach allows a LCA of the entire product by using those pre-calculated LCA profiles. The case study presents the relation between given information and gained LCA results by using the generic modules based LCA method.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. This paper proposes such a metric and demonstrates its link to supply chain effectiveness and competitive advantage. EcoPro, The Universal Environmental Metric, allows changes in the various types of environmental aspects to be evaluated together in relation to progress toward sustainability. It allows the concepts of resource productivity and eco-efficiency to be quantified in a convenient and meaningful way through the resource productivity indicator RP and the eco-efficiency index EE. These can be used as both leading (predictive) and lagging (evaluative) indicators of environmental performance. EcoPro balances environmental impact with economic output, provides a practical, quantitative criteria for sustainability (EE/spl ges/1), and demonstrates that the terms eco-efficiency and sustainability are synonymous. EcoPro utilizes and extends the methodology and terminology of the Environmental Management System approach now being widely implemented, e.g., ISO 14001, and addresses the guidance found in ISO 14031 on selecting environmental performance evaluation indicators and in ISO 14041 for life cycle analysis. Preliminary calculations on different Lucent product lines have provided insights into where environmental investments should be focused to achieve the highest return on investment and risk reduction.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. As a result, the volume of discarded products also continues to grow rapidly. Thus, it is important to divert end-of-life products from landfill disposal for reuse or materials recycling via product take-back. A systematic and practical framework is needed for the reverse supply chain. In this paper, the authors first compare take-back planning with traditional production planning. They review existing models, identify gaps, and overview several new models. Then they present a set of analytical models for the reverse supply chain.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. This approach encourages unbiased data collection and methodology development. Preliminary results from the product use life-cycle stage found that impacts calculated for the manufactured life of a monitor are on the order of 4 times greater than those estimated for an effective (actual) life. Results also found the impacts from CRT use were approximately 2.7 times that of the LCD use and that potential variability in these findings must be considered when comparing use stage impacts to other life-cycle stages.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat. This model considers criteria of environmental, recycling, together with cost, quality, reliability and performance variables, and covers a product lifecycle from design, material procurement, manufacturing, usage to disposal. Traditional LCA suffers from problems of imprecision/incomplete input data and difficult interpretation of output data. The proposed fuzzy logic-based LCA model can resolve these problems by employing a fuzzy model such that both accurate and imprecise data can be easily handled and the results are understandable to experts and nonexperts. The input data that include economic inventory, physical value, dimensionless indicator or even qualitative measure (such as performance and reliability) are all well modeled by using the proposed method. The output can be interpreted using linguistic variables. An interesting comparison of digital cameras (DC) and film cameras (FC) is performed by applying this method. Among all the lifecycle stages of DC and FC, usage and disposal stages are two important ones and is the focus of this paper. Energy consumption, media material consumption, solid waste, chemical wastes, fluid waste, and recyclability are successfully and seamlessly combined for evaluating the environmental impacts of DC and FC.","PeriodicalId":288255,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (Cat.
