In this paper, the\u0000 University of South Florida will present the results of a survey of the approaches used\u0000 in academic library websites to communicate collection policies along with related\u0000 considerations, statistics and data, justifications, and factors affecting selection\u0000 practices. Information about the important elements used to construct a dialog with\u0000 faculty and administration in order to demonstrate the costs and value of library\u0000 resources to those in the academic community is included. A case study demonstrating the\u0000 practical implementation of these communication principles at the Arthur Lakes Library\u0000 at the Colorado School of Mines will be discussed. The study will show how the Library\u0000 was able to break free from a cycle of collection stagnation, which was perpetuated by a\u0000 lack of effective communication. The result was that the Library was able to tell a\u0000 story with data in order to communicate a message, as well as strengthen their\u0000 partnerships with faculty regarding collection management.

The department primarily responsible for leading the\u0000 project, Collections Access & Technical Services, the result of two departments\u0000 merging, was also simultaneously navigating their new structure and a remodel of their\u0000 workspace thus adding further challenges to the project. This poster session\u0000 demonstrated how MSU Library approached and completed this project by advocating to\u0000 their Library Administration for additional resources, including hiring a project\u0000 manager and third-party companies to assist with the inventory and moving of the\u0000 collection. It also discussed the types of work groups formed to identify new workflows\u0000 (i.e., retrieval of offsite items) and modify existing ones, involving student employees\u0000 in the project, and internal and external collaborations that took place. Additionally,\u0000 presenters shared strategies used to communicate to their campus community, and the\u0000 impact this project has had on our patrons. They also included statistics that were\u0000 gathered during the project including deselection figures, the number of materials that\u0000 did not have barcodes and were not accounted for in the Library’s catalog and discovery\u0000 layer (Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo), and what subject areas currently remain in the main\u0000 library building.

While approval profiles have been predominantly e-preferred for some\u0000 time, the growth of demand-driven acquisition (DDA) has led to new license models, modes\u0000 of acquisition, and tighter integration of DDA with approvals. With the advent of the\u0000 DDA-preferred approval plan came options for the inclusion of multiple e-book platforms\u0000 as well as complexities involving publisher embargoes. Additionally, the numerous\u0000 approval and DDA profile parameters, workflow options, and administrator settings vary\u0000 widely, resulting in a seemingly endless array of possibilities that can affect how\u0000 titles are ultimately profiled. The task of creating a new profile or preparing profile\u0000 reviews can be overwhelming, especially for those new to profiling or trying a new\u0000 vendor. However, it can and should be a collaborative experience with vendors that leads\u0000 to more than just great profiles. While library staff should strive to learn how to make\u0000 the most of what a vendor offers, vendors should inquire about the library’s collection\u0000 development strategies, issues, and needs. Vendors can also share current trends and\u0000 offer advice modeled on how other libraries handle similar issues, as well as gather\u0000 feedback for potential development. This paper supplies tips that will help library\u0000 staff who are preparing to create or review approval or DDA profiles or to profile with\u0000 new vendors, to be better prepared in order to maximize their time profiling with\u0000 vendors.

In the same year, GVSU Libraries\u0000 welcomed several new members of its leadership team, including the dean, two associate\u0000 deans, head of systems, head of collections, business administrator, and a vacancy after\u0000 the long-time acquisitions manager retired. Budget cuts and staff turnover are tough,\u0000 but they prompted a much-needed reassessment of roles, culture, and priorities in the\u0000 library. Different approaches to spending and curating the library’s collections were\u0000 vital to counteract the budgetary challenges. Cara Cadena, the new head of collections,\u0000 was charged with building a task force to recommend cancellations and a plan to\u0000 communicate these changes across campus. Decisions were made based on feedback gathered\u0000 from teaching faculty, liaison librarians, campus stakeholders, and usage data.\u0000 Ultimately, the communication plan proved to be the most critical--and challenging--part\u0000 of the process. In this session, Cara and Marcia will discuss successes, missteps,\u0000 results, the importance of vendor relationships, and future plans for collection\u0000 management at GVSU. Attendees will gain insights into leveraging stakeholder buy-in and\u0000 grasping opportunities amidst constant change (and decreased funding) in order to evolve\u0000 effectively. Although much of the\u0000 assessment focus has disproportionately fallen on e-resources, print collections remain\u0000 fruitful areas for evaluation and review. At Emory, print collections, including a\u0000 complex approval plan, continue to be a significant component of our overarching\u0000 collection strategy (in volume and expenditure). However, shifting priorities for\u0000 library space and the growth of interdisciplinary programs and centers within the\u0000 University are placing a higher demand on subject librarians for communication and\u0000 coordinated decision-making regarding print acquisitions. As a result, we are currently\u0000 preparing for a comprehensive print collection review, of which the approval plan is an\u0000 integral component. This assessment will inform a more coherent print strategy, which\u0000 effectively and efficiently meets research and teaching requirements as well as\u0000 administrative needs. Using data cleaning and visualization tools, such as R, Excel, and\u0000 Tableau, we have enriched our local usage data with detailed Gobi approval data (e.g.,\u0000 series, publisher, subject, etc.) and profile parameters. Merging these data types and\u0000 enriching local use data will allow us to analyze the print collection in a more nuanced\u0000 fashion and ask questions that do not require the LC classification framework. This\u0000 analysis considers the development of additional tools and approaches that facilitate\u0000 subject specialist communication with collection management and overall collaborative\u0000 decision-making, especially in cross disciplinary areas.

The circulation trends of contemporary literary works in ten areas of\u0000 literature (English, American, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin American,\u0000 Chinese, Japanese, and Russian) over the past twenty years at the University of Oregon\u0000 Knight Library are presented and the circulation turnover rate (CTR), for each of these\u0000 subject areas are presented. However, there are unique aspects that shape the way collections\u0000 are selected, evaluated, managed, and promoted. Most electronic resources designed for\u0000 legal research do not generate COUNTER compliant usage data. Many subscription resources\u0000 and services that libraries provide access to are primarily geared towards non-academic\u0000 customers, such as law firms and corporations.
