The perception of the reason of disaster, firstly God, then nature, and finally, human-centered, is the basic mentality transformation that justifies social intervention against disasters. The perception of the source/cause of the disaster as first God, then as nature, and finally as human, is the basic mentality transformation that justifies social intervention against disasters. Hence, the negative impact of disasters on social institutions such as family, economy, and health, and thus on the social structure, gradually creates a social awareness and consciousness in combating disasters. It is because disasters prevent social institutions and actors from fulfilling their functions at different scales and durations, and also damage social adaptation mechanisms. In order to prevent this damage, disaster management processes developed by the official or civil authorities of the societies come into play. In this study, disaster management, which aims to reduce the damages of disasters, is discussed from the perspective of today's integrated disaster management. This perspective is called integrated because it includes the practices implemented both before and after the disaster and it foresees the participation of all social actors. This naming provides rich data directly or indirectly on social institutions, social structure, and function, which are the most fundamental study subjects of sociology, and finds concrete responses. {"title":"Identity and Social Othering: A Case Study on Youth in Turkey","authors":"Mehmet Birekul","doi":"10.51117/metder.2020.1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.51117/metder.2020.1","url":null,"abstract":"Multidimensional and original structure of identity, which prompts researchers to maintain interdisciplinary studies, have made this concept one of the most complicated and problematic issues in social sciences literature. Even though it is identified as features, characteristics, and indications regarding 'human as a social being' and it is based on some components such as common language, culture, geography and history; identity is a special historical condition of the contact with the ‘other’. From this point of view, as an existential fact unique to communities, identity develops with an interaction by referring to counterpart, i.e. ‘other’. At this point, it is understandable that ‘othering’ becomes one of the methods that help to construct the identity. In Turkish society, examining ‘other’ brings some reflexes on the process of creating identities mentioned above. Especially, either receiving someone’s existence completely or ignoring him slightly in communication process demonstrates radical biases of identity. From this point forth, current study focuses on young people, who are the dynamic groups of society, and tries to discover their attitudes towards ideas, ideologies, or beliefs in terms identity crisis. As the main discussion point, it is assumed that psychological othering process among young people is likely to become social othering among the members of society. In order to explore this assumption, a qualitative research that samples young people in Konya city was conducted. Unstructured one-by-one interviews were applied to young people in order to get in-depth information regarding the issue. Data was analysed under some themes that would appoint the aims, scopes and the problems of the study. Ortaya cikan bu yeni sinif ve kimliklerin kendi imkân ve ihtiyaclari dogrultusunda kentsel mekanlar olusturmaya baslamasi yeni bir durum olarak karsimiza cikmistir. Fakat yapilan arastirmalarda, goc olgusunun toplumsal ve tarihsel durumlarin kesitlerini sinema baglaminda sunarak, sinif, kimlik ve kent mekânina etkilerinin ele alindigi calismalarin eksikligi tespit edilmistir. Bu calismada ‘goc’ ekseninde ‘sinif ve kimlik’ olgulari irdelenmis, bu kavramlarin somutlastigi mekân unsuruna dayali olarak degerlendirilmistir. Boyle bir cerceve esliginde, calismanin yontemi Omer Lutfi Akad sinemasinda sinif ve kimlik kavramlarinin, ‘Goc Uclemesi’ olarak da anilan ‘Gelin, Dugun, Diyet’ filmlerinin uzerinden okunmasi seklindedir. Burada, sozu gecen kavramlarinin bir yonetmenin gozuyle beyaz perdeye nasil yansitildigi konusunda bir analizler yapilmistir. Soz konusu filmler ‘Sinematografik Cozumleme’ kapsaminda, ‘sosyolojik film cozumlemesi’ teknigine gore analiz edilmis, boylece calismanin ana ekseni olan toplumsal hareketler ve degisim, sinif ve kimlik unsurlari ile uretim ve tuketim bicimleri sosyolojik perspektiften ele alinmistir. Calismanin ilk bolumunde arastirmanin konusu, amaci, kapsami ve yontemi aciklanmaktadir. Ikinci bolumde calismanin kavramsal cercevesine iliskin tanimlamalar yapilmakta, ucuncu bolumde bu kavramsal temel baglaminda Omer Lutfi Akad’in ‘Goc Uclemesi’ filmlerine iliskin yapilan analizler aktarilmaktadir. Calisma bulgulari, sinif ve kimlik kavramlarinin goc ekseninde sekillenme sureclerini ortaya koyarak; kirsaldan getirilen degerler uzerine insa edilen yeni kimliklerin ihtiyaclarini karsilayacak sekilde, eski yasamin kodlarini barindiran mekânlarin olusturulma ve kullanilma sureclerini ifade etmektedir. Goc kavramina yonelik sosyolojik degerlendirmelerin otesinde, mekânsal boyutun beyaz perde araciligiyla iliskisel bir yaklasimla ele alindigi calisma, bu yonuyle farklilasmaktadir. Sonuc olarak; genis capli toplumsal ve mekânsal donusume onculuk eden kente goc sureci, sinema araciligi ile farkli bir acidan ele alinmis, beyaz perdenin bu surece isik tutma bicimi ortaya konulmustur.
