The development of relatively portable remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous undersea vehicles (AUVs), and ocean observatories with specialized sampling gear and instrumentation has provided investigators with the capabilities to sample, sense, and image the coastal ocean environment not possible using conventional surface-based technologies and techniques. This capability to directly observe and manipulate sampling devices in real time has allowed more complex and realistic experimentation in marine sciences. Described are several applications of undersea vehicles and observatories to solve critical problems and to provide predictive capability to resource managers for informed decision-making.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134378500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Remediation of the harbor basin, including dredging of the sediments heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals is necessary to convert the harbor for civilian use. Abandoned pollution sources on land still continue to leach contaminants into the harbor basin. Our long-term research objective therefore is to identify transport pathways into the harbor sediments and to assess the in-situ degradation of pollutants in the system. The Liepaja harbor is treated as a complex system, where processes in the water column interact with the sediments and the nepheloid sediment boundary layer. For this research PAHs are used as the model organic contaminant. In this project the seasonal variation in biodegradation of PAHs is measured. This analysis is coupled with total bacterial production to establish the maximum degradation rate. With complex mixing of organic contaminants and need for understanding the ground water circulation it is difficult to determine the contaminant species. For this study a thorough assessment of PAH speciation has been used to determine the variation of sources. Variation in the PAH speciation is coupled with stable carbon isotope analysis to provide additional information on the range of sources in the harbor. Radio carbon isotope analysis of CO2 in the vadose zone from a site at the Naval Station Norfolk is introduced as an approach to survey natural attenuation in this region. The Liepaja harbor is the first contaminated harbor site to be remediated in Latvia. Knowledge gained within the project will help to develop the management of harbors and polluted sites in the country. At the same time, the Liepaja harbor can be regarded as a “typical” abandoned former Soviet army site. Experiences from the Liepaja harbor will be useful in future common efforts between the former Soviet Union and the US Navy.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124850461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2010 when INPP is closed, consumption of energy fuel will increase more than 3 times in contrast with 2002. In order to avoid the dependence on fuel supply (not from one supplier-Russia) one of the possibilities is to import an alternative fuel - Orimulsion - from South America. The consumption of Orimulsion could be increased from 25-50 kt in 1995-2002 to 0,5-2,5 Mt in 2010. The probability of orimulsion spill has been assessed. The conclusion has been made that the probability of such an accident is very low and should not have an impact on the strategic decision on the use of orimulsion in Lithuania.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123202317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of larger rivers discharge their waters into this basin, transporting and depositing the residues of industrialised and agricultural developed regions. Nine riparian countries utilise the mostly sandy coastlines and the sea as living areas, tourist centres and as fishing grounds, which make a considerable contribution to the GNP of those states. Sea traffic has played a dominating role ever since in this region and most of the foreign im- and export goes that way, including the transport of hazardous goods, especially oil and oil products. There exist corridors for the safe navigation across the Baltic Sea which are crossed by a relatively high number of ferry lines between these countries. Since 1980 approximately one accident has occurred per year with a discharge of more than 100 t oil. In the case of such casualties even smaller oil slicks will reach one of the many coastlines, causing ecological and economical damage. Some relevant prevention and countermeasures have been and are discussed in the frame of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), where all riparian countries are represented, resulting in a number of recommendations. There remain open questions, however, connected to the safe transport of oil and oil products, to the environmental consequences in the case of casualties and to the control of oil spills. This paper will address some of these problems from the German point of view, based on recent German developments and the results of German research programs.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130289793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to classify these dark patches, we used ancillary satellite data and numerical models that yield environmental parameters from which slick nature can be deduced. ERS and ENVISAT images acquired during Prestige tanker accident have been tested, and then results have been compared with aircraft surveys. We conclude that in most cases environmental data are sufficient to classify slicks, and synergetic data should be used to improve oil slicks detection.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123396955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surface Application and Mobilization of Nutrient Amendments (SAMNA) is an innovative in situ bioremediation technique that can degrade various organic and inorganic contaminants in terrestrial and coastal environments. Phytoremediation is gaining acceptance as an effective remedial alternative, and it can be implemented in freshwater, brackish or saltwater environments. Three case studies are presented where these technologies were used to cleanup perchlorate, hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123475326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are eutrophication, pollution with harmful and toxic substances, oil spills accidents and sea- dumped chemical weapons. Special attention has been paid to calculations background and anthropogenic fluxes of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) to the Neva Bay from the Neva River and its branches. Calculations show that the background TDP concentration in the Neva River and its branches is 15 (10÷21) μg·L-1. The ratio of anthropogenic TDP flux to total flux of dissolved phosphorus (anthropogenic flux + background flux) varies within narrow limits.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114983397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every year 14-33 cubic kilometers of fresh water or about 5% of the inflow of all rivers flow into the Baltic Sea through the Klaipėda Strait. Together with the river water the lagoon receives industrial and municipal sewage. A large amount of fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture flowed into the lagoon as well as a large amount of dungwash water from cattle breeding farms entered it. After the restoration of the independence of Lithuania provided better conditions for the diminution of the river water pollution. During the last 14 years the amount of pollutants has been almost stable. Undeniably it can be said that the sea suffers from intensive anthropogenic activities.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"2013 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127421334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
