Ecological problems of the Baltic Sea

Abstract

The goal of the study is to collect, analyze and describe main ecological problems of the Baltic Sea. They are eutrophication, pollution with harmful and toxic substances, oil spills accidents and sea- dumped chemical weapons. Special attention has been paid to calculations background and anthropogenic fluxes of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) to the Neva Bay from the Neva River and its branches. Calculations show that the background TDP concentration in the Neva River and its branches is 15 (10÷21) μg·L-1. The ratio of anthropogenic TDP flux to total flux of dissolved phosphorus (anthropogenic flux + background flux) varies within narrow limits.
