The PCBs have simplified geometries representative for base plates used in IGBT modules. The module will be applied in subsea converters, submerged in a liquid dielectric and exposed to subsea hydrostatic pressure. One base plate was cut to examine geometric details of the cross section with a microscope. These results were used for accurate modeling of the geometry used in FEM analysis of the electric field distribution. Pd-measurements with ac voltage were performed in both air and MIDEL 7131 oil on the base plate and the PCB test objects. The discharges were detected optically by using both a photomultiplier and a light-sensitive and high-speed CMOS video camera to respectively measure the pd inception voltage and the location of the discharges. It was found that at some critical voltage the pd activity increases rapidly before leading to an electric breakdown. The degree of polymerization (DP), the frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) and water concentration in insulating oil and paper, as well as the AC breakdown voltage of insulation paper were tested and analyzed. The results indicate that the dielectric properties can be used as indicators for the degradation evaluation of insulation paper. Two main types of treeing were observed, either with one or multiple branches to the ground electrode before breakdown. Highest degree of simple branched trees was found in s-PP. The degree of crystallinity in s-PP was 53% lower than in i- PP and the spherulites size was found to be 5-15 times larger in i-PP than the crystalline areas observed in s-PP. The elasticity modulus for s-PP was half of that measured for i-PP. Based on the observed results in the natural icing station, this paper has analyzed the shape characteristic of iced conductor, and described the cross-section shape of iced conductor with an ellipse, then put forward a model to simulate the ice-melting process on the iced conductor with an elliptic cross-section. The simulated results have been validated in the natural icing station. Both the simulated results and the experimental results show that the ice-melting time of elliptic iced conductor is less than that of the circular iced conductor. Operating switchgear with active Partial Discharge (PD) increases the risk of failure occurring at the time of switching leading to increased risk to the operator. PD in switchgears can be considered to take two forms, surface discharge and internal discharge, if allowed to continue, eventually causes the insulation to break down catastrophically. The electromagnetic pulses produced by PD are in large part conducted away by the surrounding metalwork but a small proportion impinges onto the inner surface of the casing. These charges escape through joints in the metalwork, or a gasket on a gas insulated switch, and pass, as local raised voltages, across the surface of the switch to earth. These pulses of charge were named by Transient Earth Voltages (TEV), and the level of these TEV signals are proportional to the condition of the insulation for switchgear of the same type and model, measured at the same point. So TEV is a very powerful comparative technique for noninvasively checking the condition of switches. In this paper, the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method was employed to simulate the propagation law of TEV in the switchgear. However, a big problem that hampers the application of this method is difficult to establish a relationship between data from RF measurement and apparent discharge quantity, that is, use RF signal to estimate the apparent discharge. In this paper, on the basis of the experiment model of metal protrusion, the relationship between RF measurement and pulse current method (IEC60270) was investigated. The relationship curves of energy, double integration, peak voltage, peak-peak voltage, area of the RF signal relative to apparent discharge quantity or the square of apparent discharge quantity were plotted and the optimal regression curve was found out. At the same time, the impacts of voltage and the distance between protrusion and plate were investigated as well. The results indicate that the optimal regression curve is energy of RF signal relative to square of apparent discharge quantity. The variation of voltage has no impact on the regression curve, that is, data from different voltage regress to one line. However, while the distance between protrusion and plate is changed, the slope of regression curve changes according to it and the same energy is corresponding to bigger discharge quantity. As we have known, composite insulators with different shed profiles have different contamination flashover performances. In this paper, studies mainly focusing on the optimal design of composite insulators' shed. Based on the results of a great deal of artificial contamination test for specimen composite insulators with different profiles, this paper carried out the relationship between the shed parameter and the contamination flashover voltage. By the above work, flashover voltages of composite insulators can be enhanced greatly and the composite insulators will have higher utilization rate of the leakage distance. Therefore, the dimension of towers will be decreased and the cost of transmission systems will be reduced, especially in heavy pollution areas. A composite evaluation method of the fault probability for the large generator based on the multi-characteristic parameters is proposed in this paper, and it can be employed to solve the difficult problem how the occurrence probability of fault modes of the large generator can be evaluated in the process of the reliability evaluation. Firstly, the set of the fault characteristic parameters for the large generator is established on the basis of the induction and arrangement of a large number of operation experiences and the preventive test code for the large generator. Secondly, according to the features of the fault characteristic parameters, two estimation methods of the fault mode occurrence probability are proposed, which are based on the fuzzy membership function and the relative deterioration degree respectively. Finally, on the basis of the improved analytic hierarchy process (IAHP) method, the composite estimation method of the fault probability for the large generator is presented, which can reasonably and adequately use the information of the various characteristic parameters. The paper studies the AC pollution flashover performance of insulators at different height of altitude field and chamber climate separately. The test results show that: The deviation between test results with the artificial and field experiments is less than 8%, when the test carried out in climate chamber under low air pressure conditions, the characteristic exponent n describing the influence degree of air pressure on pollution flashover voltage which has influence on the pollution flashover voltage of insulators is mutative, and the value of n is related to the pollution, insulator type etc.. Under AC voltage, n is 0.50~0.60. The composite insulator is superior in external insulation selection in high altitude and heavy polluted areas.
