Earlier conception was that a media aspirant need not be trained. Media education is no more in its infancy. The pre-globalisation era saw professionals without media education. However, due to technological innovations resulting in the rapid growth, media attained the status of an industry, redefining the priorities of media. Entertainment took an upper hand. Intricacies of media functioning have become complex and needs prior-prepared minds. Media consumerism and social health demands uncompromising quality of performance. Their early grooming is inevitable. Media education has contributed well to the industry. The contribution of a trained individual, who can lead media meaningfully, is significant. This article has the scope that envisages serious shifts in paradigm that define media education. The impact of media education is better realised by the public service media. The objective of this article is to reiterate the importance of media education in the era of increased consumerism and convergence. It will look out for impact of communication research to sense the pulse of the society. It also looks into the avenues of better coordination between the professionals and the media academicians.","PeriodicalId":286963,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Communication","volume":"460 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123373601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every year, monsoon-related reportage in mainstream newspapers focuses on predictions or actual impact with the help of data provided by the Indian Meteorological Department. The monsoon however, has an impact on everyday lives and on the country, beyond data and predictions making discussions on the monsoon relevant for different communities, especially those involved in agriculture. A modern media option for discussion and information sharing across communities and regions is social media. With two-way communication online becoming a reality, social media sites are engaging with a number of users, at a personal level and also for systematic corporate, development and issue-based campaigns. The hazards of misleading information as well as domination of a few voices on social media are becoming a subject of research and concern. With over 500 million users worldwide, social media platform Twitter's brevity, immediacy and ability to connect opinion leaders and people directly has made the influential and common people equally patronize this micro-blogging site. Twitter conversations relate to issues and events that affect users or make an impression on them, providing a platform for discussions, with people from all walks of life who access social media. This paper analyzes qualitative and quantitative information on Twitter related to the southwest monsoon in India during 2015, with specific reference to the profile of people who are able to articulate their point of view on the subject. It studies how representative and equitable these messages are, in the context of agriculture, food security and those who are affected most by the monsoon and its impact. It finds that just over 7% of information in connection with the topic of the monsoon in India, is associated with agriculture-related concerns on the social networking site Twitter.","PeriodicalId":286963,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Communication","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115816919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While some scholars have lauded talk shows by equating them with deepening democracy, others dismiss them as mere carriers of neoliberal ideas that further widens the existing social divides. In order to further our understanding of the nuances of the ‘talk’ genre in television news, an attempt is made in this paper to do a textual analysis of a few episodes of the popular talk show ‘We The People’ aired on the English news channel NDTV 24x7. The data generated, is analysed along broad themes, like the type of issues debated, the presentation of the episodes, the nature of the debate/discussion, the representation of diverse voices in panel, the promotion of viewpoints and henceforth. This analysis is used in building up an argument of how talk programming in NDTV 24x7is framing the media discourse in India","PeriodicalId":286963,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Communication","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125319262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, not many films have dealt with this pertinent issue. Only few films have brought in this social reality within their discourse and have attempted to pass on the messages on normative sexual health practices, social ostracisation of HIV/AIDS affected persons and address the issues of transmission of HIV. Eventually, these films also tend take a high moral seat when the messages emanate about shattering of family bondages in the elite classes. Though, they never touch upon the impact of HIV and AIDS and social outcasts in the rural population. Thus, the films end up as ‘sermons’ for the urban as well as rural population, who according to it are to be ‘morally taught’ about. This paper critically examines the representation and social construction of HIV/AIDS in three Hindi mainstream films, looking at the aspect of how the HIV/AIDS subject is constructed amongst the urban populations; how the various stigmas, misconceptions and acceptance levels are addressed through the narratives; and the manner in which the politics of normative sexual health is challenged through the cinematic medium.","PeriodicalId":286963,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Communication","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126635503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has become increasingly essential to assess the awareness regarding climate change in the general population for framing the mitigation activities. Keeping this in view, an online survey was conducted to know responses of educators, researchers and students on their awareness level, probable actions and suggestions in matters related to climate change. The awareness level was quite important for policy planning at their level which could have impact on the later generations. The survey was conducted through Google Drive online analysis and survey tool consisting of both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Subjects had poor appreciation of facts such as effect of climate change on farmers but established a consistency on the responses that climate change can be mostly mitigated by individuals at their own level.","PeriodicalId":286963,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Communication","volume":"380 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129873269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
