Focusing in particular on the specialized writing styles employed in leaked US government surveillance documents, I analyze two prominent policy advocacy organizations’ online writing before and after the 2013 National Security Agency leaks to understand the shifting accessibility of their language styles, and how these changes altered the inclusiveness of ensuing debates. Crucially, the NSA documents themselves provide evidence of surveillance policies potentially affecting billions of technology users: immeasurably diverse in their abilities, identities, ages, technical literacies, and linguistic backgrounds. Noting that public policy advocates are also technical communicators, I argue for a renewed ethical responsibility to communicate complex policy information in accessible styles, genres, and media, and I propose that accessibility is a positive normative value bearing significantly upon legitimacy.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125543907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It will start with best practices of all public speaking such as how to lessen the fear of public speaking; how to develop the presentation opening, body and closing; and how to use gestures, vocal variety, eye contact and body language to engage the audience. This will establish the foundation for technical presentation development and delivery. The workshop then transitions to special considerations for technical public speaking: slide preparation, answering technical questions, and ensuring technical accuracy. All attendees will develop a technical presentation. Selected attendees will deliver their technical presentations which will be evaluated by the attendees and the workshop leader.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132768361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They also demonstrate the broader need for better methods in product development. This need is further illustrated in entrepreneurship, as the failure rate for product development is anywhere between 30 to 75%. To improve performance and reduce the failure rates of start-ups, new venture teams and nationally funded programs such as I-Corps adopted product development methods such as Lean Canvas and Customer Discovery. However, there are still challenges with these methodologies. Other than “listen,” there is limited training for developing questions and conducting interviews. As a result, shortcomings in both the personal protective equipment industry and product development in entrepreneurship demonstrate the need to understand the foundational elements of each, in a way that is grounded in research. The purpose of this case study is to address those shortcomings, identify areas for innovation and improve safety for athletes. The case study is grounded in qualitative research methods and is executed by implementing Customer Discovery. The application of the methodologies is expected to create a product development framework for entrepreneurs, implementing it with individuals that use bicycle helmets and bike industry personnel.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131539062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To understand how these important tasks are being achieved, 21 engineering faculty members in a STEMfocused Midwest US university were interviewed. Engineering faculty showed an awareness of the rhetorical power of manuals and other instructional resources. Unfortunately, these resources are often inadequately designed to meet the unique needs of engineering faculty. In this paper, we propose that there is an exigency for a faculty-focused subgenre of instructional writing which addresses the needs of engineering instructors who teach students how to use technology while simultaneously learning how to use it themselves. Because of the overwhelming roles that faculty perform, we propose that the composition of this sub-genre should be the duty of technical writers who work closely with technology developers and engineering faculty. We forward that such a subgenre may find space in digital and non-digital learning resources through the inclusion of both the technical information necessary to use the technology, as well as pedagogical tools and activities to support student learning. These materials should be released in accordance with technology updates to ensure faculty are best positioned to teach the most current technologies. The proposed faculty-focused instructional writing subgenre may have implications beyond engineering education, because the need for learning resources may not be unique to engineering faculty, and likely exists for all university faculty learning and introducing new technologies within their courses.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123257208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using interview tapes housed in the Janice M. Lauer special collections at Purdue University, we use a case study approach to identify the strategies she used to persuade and navigate relationships with reluctant colleagues. The “Saturday Tapes” are a collection of recordings that capture six separate interviews with Lauer about distinct topics related to her career as an administrator, a mentor, and a scholar. Specifically, we analyze Interview #1 of the Saturday Tapes, which interviews Lauer about the founding of the rhet-comp graduate program at Purdue. Our findings indicate and we subsequently argue that, in this interview, Lauer used non-identification and empathy without coercion or erasure of difference with her colleagues in order to build the program all the while maintaining departmental collegiality. Further, we assert that Lauer’s disidentification with conventional Rhetoric and her strategic use of feminist rhetorical principles were key in the development of a successful Rhetoric and Composition graduate program. In the spirit of feminist rhetorical practices, we open up possibilities regarding what this approach could lend to the future of Rhetoric and Composition.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121817299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use visualizations here to mean the visual depictions of data via charts, graphs, and other forms. We focus on data visualizations because they are typically the first thing that draws the reader’s attention.Our study updates the results of a previous literature review on data visualizations [6] that reported on 25 empirical studies that asked participants about data visualizations in health and medical information contexts. By updating this integrative literature review with data from the last five years (2017-2021), our goal is to examine changes in empirical research on data visualizations across disciplines. This analysis of 32 empirical studies found that pictographs, icon arrays, and bar charts remain effective choices for data visualizations with diverse users. However, the studies also point to an ongoing need to conduct research with more contextualized research questions and a focus on interactive displays, issues of numeracy, and a closer look at risk. More so than scholars in other disciplines, TPC scholars are uniquely positioned to focus on context with an eye toward generalizable approaches, which are much needed in research communicating complex health information through data visualizations.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122274270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A literature review has been done with 17 studies that compare design elements of Chinese and Western websites. We found most results of the studies were difficult to compare, since different design elements or different attributes of the same elements were investigated. Only a few consistent findings could be drawn from the reviewed studies: (1) Chinese websites have more items and active elements, while Western websites have more footers; (2) Chinese websites use more red and blue colors, and links opening in new windows. By contrast, Western websites use more white color and underlined links; (3) Chinese websites have more images related to leaders or ceremonies, while Western websites have more images related to daily life or nature. We also found that most studies relate the differences to various dimensions of Hofstede’s or Hall’s cultural models, but the explanations sometimes raise questions. Based on the findings of this review, a discussion on future directions of cross-cultural design studies is presented.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123449252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The comments sections of these videos are sites of debate over the ethics of place. In this study, we analyze comments on three viral videos to investigate three questions: Who has, or who creates, authority in construction of a space- or place-based ethic? In what ways are arguments about environmental ethics regarding space and place formed, and how do they emerge in social media spaces? What can we learn from an investigation of specific viral videos, including their associated comments, as they relate to place and space-based ethics? This study suggests interesting possibilities for the way ethics-related information moves, and for the ways we consider place and space in relation to ourselves and our world.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"258 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122669834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Key soft skills for the 21st century include the 4Cs: collaboration, communication, curiosity and critical thinking. Despite this, studies have shown a gap in the skills of students entering the workplace, both by employers and the students themselves. This is a global issue, and specifically in China, as Chinese students also require the necessary training in communication and teamwork skills but have little exposure in their traditional education. However, few studies create and research projects to facilitate certain specific 4C skills such as curiosity and collaboration. This paper presents a case study of a semester long team project that aimed at developing these skills among Chinese STEM students. While initially reluctant, students expanded these 4C soft skills and experienced the potential benefits of teamwork when compared with their preferred mode of individual study.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128179940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
