Abstract

This study analyzed the impact of supplemental style guides on professional discourse in the journalism field. I conducted a textual analysis of style guides published by the Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Native American Journalists Association, NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, and Trans Journalists Association and compared these guides to the AP Stylebook coverage of diversity topics. The supplemental guides cover more topics and with greater depth than the AP Stylebook relative to the experiences of historically marginalized communities. These guides can supplement the style guides in professional and technical communication in a variety of internal and external contexts.
