Based on the well-known ultrasonic immersion transmission technique, the experimental investigation of acoustic wave propagation in two-dimensional phononic crystals for square, honeycomb and (4.82) lattices of steel rods in water is reported at the same normalized radius. Using the plane-wave expansion method we calculate the band structures of phononic crystal. The configurations of square, honeycomb and (4.82) lattices have an atom-rods, two atoms-rods and four atoms-rods per unit cell respectively. We found the structure of (4.82) lattice can have the advantage over other lattice structures and open the very lower-frequency complete band gap. Also, a good agreement between experimental results of complete band gaps for three lattices phononic crystals and theoretical predictions is obtained. Thus, the (4.82) phononic crystal may help to design the new controlling materials in lower-frequency ranges as noise barriers.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131788820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The moter structure was designed in which a lever mechanism was used to achieve amplification of the piezoelectric stack vibration amplitude. The stack vibration amplitude was amplified by the lever and then transferred to the two ends of the driving foot whose motion form an elliptical trajectory at the top of the driving foot. A prototype was made according to analysis of the operating principle of the motor. The experimental results show that in the frequency range 1300–2200 Hz the maximum thrust force of the motor is 0.3N, the maximum non-loaded velocity of the motor is 3.2mm/s.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121477179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The crack face is parallel to the poling direction and normal to the plane of isotropy in three-dimensional (3D) transversely isotropic piezoelectric media. The result shows that the singularity order is still the ordinary r−1/2 at the crack tip. The mode I stress intensity factor is related only to the displacement discontinuity or the mechanical loading in the normal direction of the crack plane, whilst the other field intensity factors are coupled together by other extended displacement discontinuities. When the crack is extended infinitely in the y-direction, the problem is reduced to a two-dimensional (2D) one, and the corresponding coupling behavior is simplified.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115030428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of the unique advantages such as self-locking on the power off, compact structure, fast response etc., piezoelectric actuators have been taking place of the traditional actuators which are based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. In this research, piezoelectric stacks were utilized as driving source to propose a piezoelectric linear motor. Design requirements of this motor were presented first and the structure of the motor was proposed. By modeling its stator, the operating principle of the motor was analyzed. In order to validate the feasibility of the principle, a prototype was made. The experimental results of the prototype show that the driving foot of the prototype vibrated with elliptical trajectory while two piezoelectric stacks are applied with two sinuous voltage signals with the same frequency. When proper preload is applied between the stator and rotor, the maximum no-load velocity of the motor is 7.3mm/s, and the maximum thrust force of the motor is 6.38 N.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133339242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulations demonstrate that the carrier temperature and density drastically evolve at the early heating time, while the lattice temperature gradually rises until the carrier-lattice thermal equilibrium is reached. The surface reflectivity dynamically changes as the carrier density evolves. The femtosecond laser heating can cause a strong thermal stress wave in the film. Initially, a compressive wave is yielded with the peak compression near the irradiated surface. Then, the compression wave transforms into a two-fold wave including compression and tension. At the rear film side, a strong tensile wave occurs with the maximum tension near the back surface. It is also found that shorter laser wavelength brings not only higher carrier temperature and density but also higher lattice temperature and larger thermal stresses.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133374614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The value proposition was size (relative to the ceramic duplexers used at that time). At the time, it was supposed that FBAR technology using AlN as the active piezo material would not last beyond a few years. SAW technology, already entrenched in the lower frequencies and with better economies of scale and lower technology barrier to commercialization should have quickly made FBAR a ‘short-lived’ technology. Although still a possibility, FBAR has persevered for over 10 years due to several reasons; high Q, small size, ability to form an all-silicon package (utilizing silicon-fab technology) and reliability. However, the next 10 years pose a challenge to FBAR and serious innovation is necessary so that a similar talk about the success of FBAR covering 20 years can be given. Innovation must cover the ability to go differential, temperature compensation, continued Q enhancement, and chip-scale packages to spread the cost of manufacturing and research. This talk will touch on each of these subjects as well as giving an overview of the unique set of circumstances that made FBAR as successful as it is.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114453733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been found that the two-step sintering technique is effective even for the synthesized BaTiO3 powder of submicron-sized particles. A BaTiO3 ceramic with relative density as high as 98.2% and small grain size of about 1.7 µm was successfully obtained. Its dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated and compared with those of the ordinarily-sintered BaTiO3 ceramic under an optimized sintering condition. The ceramic prepared by the new technique shows high piezoelectric properties of d33 = 390 pC/N and kp = 0.40 and is thus much superior to the ordinarily-sintered one, which displays only d33 = 300 pC/N and kp = 0.32. The results demonstrate that fabricating BaTiO3 ceramics with ideal microstructure and high piezoelectric properties at low cost is possible.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131854091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The piezoelectric sensors such as piezoelectric shell structure have better electrical-mechanical coupling properties and less effect of bulk and weight. This paper studies the response characteristics of an interceptive spherical piezoelectric shell under stochastic boundary micro-vibration excitations. The equation for electric potential is integrated, and the displacement is transformed and expanded to yield the ordinary differential equations for the shell. The frequency-response function, power spectral density and correlation function matrices of the shell system response are derived. Then the root-mean-square displacement, stress and electric potential of the piezoelectric shell can be calculated. The numerical results are given to illustrate the stochastic electrical-mechanical coupling properties and the relation between boundary electric potential responses and micro-vibration excitations.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123785335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This structure is composed of a two-dimensional phononic crystal plate coated with two homogeneous substrates on both surfaces. The phononic crystal plate is constituted by a square array of elastic cylinder embedded in a solid matrix. It is shown that some complete band gaps are opened by changing the thickness of the phononic crystal plate, and that the width of the first band gap becomes larger as the thickness increased. The influence of the thickness and material properties of the substrates on the width of the complete band gap is discussed as well. It is noted that the thickness of either phononic crystal plate or substrates plays a key role in tuning the band gaps of the sandwich phononic crystal plates.","PeriodicalId":285701,"journal":{"name":"2011 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Applications (SPAWDA)","volume":"09 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124984085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
