Fluctuations in wind speed can lead to fluctuations in the power fed into the grid by the wind farm. As a result of these fluctuations, transient over voltages occur in the grid and especially in loads near the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). In this paper, the causes of over voltages in wind turbines were studied and simulated in Simulink MATLAB. Their negative effects on reducing the lifetime of electrolytic capacitors used in Adjustable Speed Drivers (ASD) induction motors were studied. As a result of the thermal stresses caused by these over voltages, the predicted lifetime of one type of electrolytic capacitor examined is reduced by 50% from about 18,000 hours to about 9,000 hours.","PeriodicalId":281528,"journal":{"name":"7th Iran Wind Energy Conference (IWEC2021)","volume":"186 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129661809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method was applied for analyzing the potential for the development of wind power plants in Iran. Considering the various environmental conditions in the country and lack of thorough investigations, Iran was chosen as the case study. However, the method could be easily extended to apply to other regions. In this study, the related technical data for all the 559 Synoptic meteorological stations in the country were investigated and used as the inputs for the introduced method. Applying two-step interviews with local experts and reviewing the literature, the leading indicators and their effectiveness were determined. After developing the fuzzy rules and sets based on the indicators’ behaviors and impacts, all the sites were scored and ranked using type-2 fuzzy logic in the proposed method. Finally, based on the outputs and the rankings, the priority tables were provided. The final standing of the top fifty sites in Iran for implementing offshore and onshore wind power plants was introduced. The current study results could be used for primary assessment for organizing investment resources for efficient and proper power plant development. Moreover, based on the results, several recommendations and suggestions were also mentioned for future studies.","PeriodicalId":281528,"journal":{"name":"7th Iran Wind Energy Conference (IWEC2021)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129801771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wind energy is one of the most important sources of renewable energy. In recent years designing and increasing the performance of wind turbine devices has been a significant effort of scientists. Savonius wind turbine is one of the vertical axis wind turbines. This type of wind turbine has some advantages such as self-starting ability even in the low-speed area, simple design, and low noise, which makes them stable for capturing wind energy in urban areas. But there is an undesirable negative torque that causes turbine performance to drop. Installing an upstream deflector can reduce the negative torque. Moreover, utilization of the wind-lens and Twin-rotor system increases the turbine performance. The effects of this proposed hybrid system on the performance of the Savonius wind turbine are investigated numerically using ANSYS-fluent software. In the present study, a complete investigation of geometric parameters such as width, distance from the wind-lens throat, and deflector angle on the performance of the turbine is evaluated. Results show a combination of the upstream deflector, wind-lens, and twin-rotors system increase the power coefficient of the turbine by about 121% relative to a single rotor Savonius wind turbine.","PeriodicalId":281528,"journal":{"name":"7th Iran Wind Energy Conference (IWEC2021)","volume":"427 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116699116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the ratio of wind speed increment related to free stream wind speed and turbulence rate in a pre-designed duct used for a horizontal three-blade wind turbine was evaluated using a hot-wire anemometer sensor and data analysis methods. The duct installed in the University of Tehran Aerospace Faculty wind tunnel and flow characterization was performed by using CTA apparatus to measure and evaluate the wind flow turbulency in the throat section of the duct, where the wind turbine was installed. Wind speed analysis was done at different speed of the wind tunnel test section and shown that in the throat section of the duct the wind speed increased with a constant slope and in more analysis, it was found the wind speed in the duct throat can be increased to 2.5 up to 3 times of free stream flow speed at a different wind speed of wind tunnel test section. Fast Fourier transform was used to evaluate the frequency content of measured signals and it is shown that frequency level decreased by any decrease in wind flow speed and its energy level. From spectral analysis, it was found that only a few peaks are included in the extracted frequency that shown low turbulence inside the duct it can be concluded that the flow disturbances will not have a significant impact on the performance of the wind turbine placed inside the duct throat.","PeriodicalId":281528,"journal":{"name":"7th Iran Wind Energy Conference (IWEC2021)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129500587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But, increasing the grid nominal voltage, the power switch stresses increase significantly. Also, the generated voltage by DVRs may contain high total harmonic components. In this regard, this research work aimed to introduce a new structure for step-up switched capacitor converter (SCC) for voltage regulation by DVRs. Among the advantages of the proposed structure, increasing the voltage amplitude, providing more voltage levels and using fewer components compared to the conventional structures can be mentioned. In the proposed structure, a 13 level inverter is presented which has two independent DC voltage source. The capabilities of the suggested 13-level structure, it is used to feed resistive and resistive-inductive loads. The capabilities of the proposed structure are tested in MATLAB/Simulink. These generators are prone to some faults that could deteriorate their performance and even lead to their outage from the network. Stator inter-turn short-circuits (SITSC) and high resistance connections (HRC) in the stator are two major types of faults that cause electrical asymmetry in the stator circuit. Yet, SITSC are more noticeable and require immediate scrutiny. Hence, if an HRC can be distinguished from a SITSC fault, the immediate outage of the WT can be avoided in the case of an HRC. In this paper, both types of faults are studied and compared, being their detection performed using appropriate fault indices obtained from the stator current, rotor current, and rotor modulating voltage signals, all available in the control system of the DFIG. Several fault severity indices are proposed for a better evaluation of the fault extension, and the discrimination between SITSC and HRC is discussed. The performance of the defined fault indices is verified using a magnetic equivalent circuit model of the DFIG and an experimental setup with the DFIG running at several operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":281528,"journal":{"name":"7th Iran Wind Energy Conference (IWEC2021)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131234662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
