We analyzed data collected from 17,848 vulnerable households in rural Uganda over four years on vulnerable children and focuses on how those living with disabilities progress out of vulnerability. The analysis shows that whereas the children with disabilities we more likely to transition from critical vulnerability than others, they were less likely to transition out of vulnerability in general. We also found an effect of parental and guardian disability on child education. We recommend that for programs to support the realization of the right to education, more focus should be centered on households living with disabilities. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":278193,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Children's Rights / Revue canadienne des droits des enfants","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127326435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It reflects on the model which was used to run a workshop that focused on children’s rights and disability to explore the guiding question: “Can Disability be Positive?” It reveals how the event unfolded, key messages from working with children and youth with disabilities, how the model worked or instances when it did not and key components that are helpful for other’s who may be interested in organizing a youth-led consultative and collaborative workshop with young people with disabilities. Ultimately, the paper explores the concepts of marginality and relationality and the ways these notions highlight how adult-centric views creep into the best laid efforts of adults who are aware of the strength of youth-led workshops.","PeriodicalId":278193,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Children's Rights / Revue canadienne des droits des enfants","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131161026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we make the case that a prerequisite to meaningful participation is providing children with an early environments conducive to creating the capacity to participate within the child. Early environments have a profound impact on children’s brain development and as such on their motivation and capacity to exercise their participation rights. We believe that insufficient attention has been paid to preparing children neurologically for meaningful participation in matters that affect them. After summarizing brain development in early childhood, we make the case that active listening which acts as sensory stimulation for the developing brain, and active learning, which builds confidence, self-esteem, and problem-solving skills, play key roles in promoting children’s cognitive and motivational capacity for meaningful participation. Participation is meant to promote self-determination through the capacity to make effective decisions about self and others. Active listening and active learning increase the likelihood that this aim will be achieved.","PeriodicalId":278193,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Children's Rights / Revue canadienne des droits des enfants","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115234011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

International mandates, national legislation, and local policies have increased global awareness of the rights of children to be provided with environments for optimal healthy development and education, including the right to early intervention. The right to early intervention is articulated by the United Nations in several international declarations and conventions. Article 20 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC, 1989) was the first convention to use the term disability. It specifically addresses the particular rights of disabled children, with articulation of the right to “enjoy a full and decent life, in conditions which ensure dignity, promote self-reliance, and facilitate the child’s active participation in the community” (A.20, s.1, 1990). Further, the CRC clearly states that children have the right to special care and assistance for both the child and the service providers working with the child. Services are to be delivered free of charge in order to ensure that the child has access to education, training, health care, rehabilitation, preparation for employment, and recreation services. In all cases these services must consider the fullest social integration and individual development that is consistent with cultural and spiritual beliefs (A.20, s.2-4).
