We apply a logistic regression-based algorithm to three types of classification tasks: binary classification, multiple classification and classification into a hierarchy. At this stage, for our experiments we use a set of 150 topics from the TIPSTER collection. We develop heuristics as to how to build a logistic regression model for high dimensional, sparse data sets. This research describes work in progress.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Tenth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications. By specifying one or more keywords, users direct search engines to return a set of documents that contain those keywords. From the documents (links) returned by search engines, user proceed to further probe the WWW from there. Hence, these initial set of documents (contingent upon the occurrence of keyword(s)) serve as a Web checkpoint. Generally, these links are numerous and may not result in much fruitful searches. By establishing multiple Web checkpoints, a richer and controllable search procedure can be constructed to obtain more relevant Web information. This paper presents the design and implementation of permitting multiple checkpoints to facilitate improved searching on the WWW. Web checkpointing is performed as part of the WHOWEDA project.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Tenth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications. For this reason, very significant research has focused on similarity queries from the standpoint of the definition and creation of appropriate index structures. We provide a formal framework in which formulate powerful similarity-based queries. For this purposes a fuzzy relational algebra extending the classical relational algebra is defined and equivalence and containment rules for query processing are given.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The method uses the wavelet transform to extract color and texture features from an image and applies a clustering technique to partition the image into a set of \"homogeneous\" regions. Similarity between images is assessed by using the Bhattacharyya distance to compare region descriptors, and then combining the results at image level. Experimental results on a testbed of 10000 general-purpose images show that our approach is very effective in retrieving images that are \"semantically\" similar to the query image. In particular, we compared results of WINDSURF with the approach by Stricker and Orengo, showing that that a significant improvement is obtained in the quality of the result.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Derived from these concepts and assumptions, a contracting framework is presented that gives an overview of the services and roles that have to be fulfilled in a business transaction to manage the flow of information. Finally, a container architecture as an instantiation of a market transaction managing entity is presented, described and embedded into the BMF. The concept provided in the paper was developed within the Secure Electronic Contracts (SeCo) project at the =mcm Institute at the University of St. Gallen and the University of Zurich in Switzerland (M. Gisler et al., 1999). The focus of the project is to merge business requirements on electronic contracting with IT security requirements and legal aspects. The paper mainly covers a contracting framework that meets business requirements on electronic contracting in business media.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Referred to as the Infinite Memory Multifunction Machine (IM/sup 3/), this system solves most of the problem of lost documents. However, because of the indiscriminate way it captures data, it is important that users have easy-to-use retrieval tools. Two document analysis techniques are described that simplify retrieval from large collections like the IM/sup 3/. One technique detects duplicates or versions of a document. Another method automatically files a document in a hierarchy familiar to a user. Experimental results are presented that illustrate the performance of each method.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The high level abstraction corresponds to the view in which the contents of that video document are seen by end users. And the low level abstraction corresponds to the physical organization of that video document. We propose a novel prefetching strategy that merges the two views of a video document to trigger prefetching at the video server level. We focus on the impact of the high level view on the proposed prefetching technique. Specifically, we study the behavior of the prefetching technique under different typologies of the video database contents. The simulation experiments show an improvement of between 10% and 23%.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Tenth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications. The paper describes the points to be considered when one selects an OCR system in order to build a database. Based on our experiments on four commercial OCR systems, we chose one that shows the highest recognition rate to build an OCR text database. The character recognition rate was 90.5% over 970 abstracts of conference proceedings in Korean. This recognition rate is still insufficient for practical use. For practical use of the OCR texts which has approximately 10% of character-level errors, we need to investigate whether automatic indexing generates acceptable retrieval performance. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate which indexing method results in better performance. Experimental results show that 2-gram indexing provides similar retrieval efficiency to morpheme based indexing for the Korean OCR text database. In addition, the retrieved results of the indexed OCR texts are similar to those selected by experts.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Recently, many research groups have been focused on \"desk\" as an interactive environment in which projective display and user's action can share the same physical space. Although our experimental setup is similar to these researches, our aim differs from their approach in the point that we limit the target to documents placed on a desktop to monitor the thinking process of a user from appearance. The system recognizes documents, folders, and stacks and their layout from a TV camera located above desk, and it also recognizes the motion of user's hands to estimate the action. We indicate that the system can consistently manage personal documents even if they are cluttered on the desk.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Cache consistency mechanisms are a crucial component of each cache scheme influencing the cache usefulness and reliability. The paper presents a model for optimizing Internet cache content by the use of a genetic algorithm and examines the model by trace-driven experiments. Cached data are considered as a population evolving over simulated time by a number of successive cache \"generations\". The model is tested by the use of traces provided by a Squid proxy cache server. Using trace-driven caching, we show that the proposed evolutionary mechanisms improve cache nonstaleness and consistency and result in an updated cache content.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
