Sitting in front of laptops or computers for several hours (sedentary lifestyle), using cell phones, watching television, skipping meals or eating junk/ fast food, lack of physical activities, stress, etc. increase the risk of many lifestyle diseases. All the above-mentioned habits increase the count of free radicals in our body and due to a lack of endogenous and exogenous antioxidants, the body cannot combat oxidative stress. Thus, the chances of occurrence of several chronic diseases like cancer, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammations, etc. increase. There are several factors contributing to neurodegeneration of the brain and neurons, in which oxidative stress plays an important role. This review article is the compilation of research done by several other researchers on Neurodegenerative Diseases (NDDs) and is primarily focused on better understanding a few basic questions like the correlation of oxidative stress and nutrition to neurodegeneration, NDDs, their different types, symptoms and causes followed by establishing a relation between oxidative stress and nutrition with the help of several studies carried out by researchers in this context.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133068781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: The aim of this study was to ascertain the effect of IVIS therapy on pregnant females having anaemia who were receiving this therapy in a primary care setting. Method: This prospective study was conducted at a randomly selected rural Primary Health Centre (PHC) in the Nuh district. 138 moderately anaemic females were given the standard form of IVIS therapy. The study subjects were requested to repeat haemoglobin levels after 2 weeks and 4 weeks of receipt of the last dose of therapy. Results: Of the total 154 anaemic pregnant women, 138 (89.6%) were diagnosed to have moderate anaemia. The number of study subjects with moderate anaemia reduced from 138 to 54, (54.54% reduction) when haemoglobin level was measured at the end of 4 weeks (endline). The mean rise in haemoglobin level among moderately anaemic pregnant females was 1.62 g/dL. At the end of 4 weeks (endline), 73.75% of the study subjects achieved normal levels of haemoglobin (from a total of 80 moderately anaemic women measurement). Conclusion: The mean rise in haemoglobin level in moderately anaemic pregnant females was 1.62 g/dL among participants who received IVIS therapy in a primary care setting in an underprivileged area in Haryana state. The women having severe anaemia achieved a better rise in Hb levels.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130832370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increased insulin resistance is seen during the course of a healthy pregnancy. During the early stages of normal pregnancies, the pancreatic β-cells secrete more insulin, which slows the rise in plasma glucose levels. This regulation explains the abnormally modest increases in plasma glucose levels brought on by elevated insulin resistance. The aim of this review was to evaluate the role of insulin resistance in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The authors extensively searched various electronic databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for the collection of material regarding the role of insulin resistance in GDM. It was seen that hyperglycaemia results from the combination of the pregnancy’s increased insulin tolerance and pancreatic beta-cell insufficiency. Scientific studies have revealed that individuals who present with GDM are more likely to acquire chronic insulin resistance because of the superimposition of lower insulin production by the cells in that condition (GDM). Due to their significance in the development of postpartum diabetes mellitus, inflammation markers in GDM have been widely researched. Inflammation during GDM induces adaptive reactions in the placenta, which can have a substantial effect on the programming of foetal development.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"160 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132017273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerous flavonoids have been demonstrated in animal models to ameliorate brain ischemia-reperfusion damage. Piperine is a flavonoid derived from Piper nigrum L. that exhibits a variety of pharmacological effects. The purpose of this research was to determine if Piper nigrum L. has a protective effect against the brain damage caused by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) in rats. Materials and Methods: The animal study was certified by Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) under research project no. RKCP/COI/RP/12/28. Numerous parameters were evaluated to ascertain the extent of oxidative stress and eventual protection of Piper nigrumL. including glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxidation (LPO), brain protein, and calcium levels in brain homogenate. The preventive effect of P. nigrum was evaluated and compared with quercetin as a standard using histopathology and the region of cerebral infarction. Results: In our research, we observed a substantial rise in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione, and brain protein levels and a fall in lipid peroxidation and calcium levels in the P. nigrum and quercetin treated groups with the level of significance (p value) less than 0.05, confirming the protective effect against brain injury. Additionally, P. nigrum was shown to provide less protection compared to quercetin. Conclusion: As a result of these data, we hypothesise that P. nigrummay have a considerable neuroprotective effect in the brain against ischemic/ reperfusion-induced oxidative damage.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114693549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Physiotherapy management plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of athlete injury. Numerous pieces of evidence suggest that quick fix approaches, lack of clinical reasoning skills in injury healing science, and current Indian medical system practising guidelines are the reason for poor quality treatment in India, and it is difficult to provide the best quality treatment as per the athletes’ requirements. A multidisciplinary team along with prompt evidence-based treatment is important in injury management. This article describes the current scenario in Indian physiotherapy as well as the suggestions and recommendations to implement evidence-based strategies for proper injury management among athletes.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115350687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: This study explores the diurnal variations of the salivary cortisol levels among selected employed and unemployed women. Method and Material: From a population of 400 employed and 272 unemployed women, 40 women (20 employed and 20 unemployed) were selected. In order to compare the cortisol levels between women without stress and with stress, 5 each from employed and unemployed groups with normal stress scores and 15 from each group with mild to moderate stress scores based on the DAS (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Score) were included in the study. Results: Employed women exhibited two peaks in the hormonal profile, a sharp peak in the early morning (CAR-cortisol awakening response) with the mean cortisol level of 14.7 ± 5.9 nmol/l which slowly dropped to 10.1 ± 4.7 nmol/l in the noon and increased again by evening to 11.8 ± 4.6 nmol/l. Among the unemployed women, a single peak appeared for CAR that is 12.6 ± 3.5 nmol/l, which gradually declined to 8.1 ± 2.3 nmol/l by evening time. Conclusion: The extent of stress is exhibited by multiple peaking of cortisol levels among employed women. Unemployed women with stress had markedly high levels of cortisol compared with their counterparts with no stress. It is of greater concern that the employed women with stress have markedly high cortisol levels which could be an indication of health issues in the longer run.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126689839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Failure of the resorption of the duct results in several anomalies. These anomalies usually occur in approximately 2% of the population. Individuals having such anomalies may remain asymptomatic throughout life. The embryonic vitelline duct obliterates in 5 to 9 weeks of intrauterine life normally. Persistence of this results in vitellointestinal duct/ omphalomesenteric duct anomalies. It is usually seen in the paediatric age group. Moreover, they have a different course in adults than the paediatric age group in which they frequently involute and have a benign course. These remnants are prone to infection and development of malignancy. A proper diagnostic workup by clinical and imaging tools is required. Hereby we have reported a rare case of remnant OMD which presented as an umbilical sinus with a granuloma in an adult patient.","PeriodicalId":276735,"journal":{"name":"Chettinad Health City Medical Journal","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123091562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
