A qualitative approach was employed in this study by using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) with 12 scenarios. The data were analyzed into the refusal taxonomy proposed by Beebe et al. (1990). The results showed that the indirect strategy become the most frequently used strategy performed by male and female students. However, the female students have used a variety of indirect strategies slightly greater than did the male students. Moreover, the interlocutor status also affected a similar effect on the refusal strategy performed by the participants. Therefore, there is no significant difference in refusals between male and female students, and the results reveal that EFL students prefer to refuse respectfully to avoid offending others. The researchers proposed that future studies use not only DCT but also other instruments in collecting data in order to acquire complete data to explore pragmatic competency.","PeriodicalId":276385,"journal":{"name":"JELLT (Journal of English Language and Language Teaching)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116467405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was grounded in a qualitative approach with a phenomenological case study design. Three undergraduate students of the 9th semester from the English Education Department in Wiralodra University were recruited to participate in this research. The data were derived from the three-interview series framework that consists of fifteen questions. The interview data were qualitatively analyzed by using inductive phenomenological reduction based on Seidman (2013). This research revealed that undergraduate experience varies, from the struggle with the connection to the limited communication between lecturer-students or student-students. Distance learning also impacts their feeling on how they mean distance learning, which makes the students mostly lazier as the communication is also limited and the policy is none to them who are not attending the class. It is also showed benefits and drawbacks where it is more flexible but unstable. The cost comes to be cheaper, but they still pay the tuition fee even though they did not use the campus facility, and the main technical difficulties lie in which device and apps they used at that moment. \u0000Keywords: perception, distance learning, benefits, drawbacks.","PeriodicalId":276385,"journal":{"name":"JELLT (Journal of English Language and Language Teaching)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117273943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During this online learning, problems have started to unravel, and one of them is fatigue, which was confirmatively experienced by 55% students of Reading IV. This study, utilizing a quantitative research method, intended to find the causes of the fatigue and design practicable solutions. Through observations, group interview, and literature reviews, some main factors that caused fatigue were revealed: Zoom fatigue; tasks which were too difficult and numerous; presentation of materials which did not properly comply with the students’ online conditions and unfamiliarity to Google Classroom; eye fatigue (digital eye strain), bad postures during learning, lockdown fatigue, and frustration over signal and internet problems. To overcome the fatigue, the researchers reduced the time for video conferences and created asynchronous short videos for learning, selectively adjusted tasks in terms of number and difficulty, simplified presentations of materials and helped the students to become more familiar with Google Classroom, and addressed the problems from eye strain, bad postures, and lockdown fatigue in the reading materials so the students could solve those problems based on the texts given or find a more viable solution. Those solutions reduced the number of drained students to only 25% and in addition 60% students claimed that the modifications brought a positive impact on their learning. \u0000Keywords: fatigue, distance learning, COVID-19, Zoom fatigue","PeriodicalId":276385,"journal":{"name":"JELLT (Journal of English Language and Language Teaching)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127971892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to explain: (1) form, pragmatic function, and translation strategy of the word fuck, and (2) the implication of the word fuck translation strategy on pragmatic equivalence in The Wolf of Wall Street movie. The words of fuck were identified from the both English and Indonesian subtitles. Then, the data were categorized and the implications were investigated. The results indicate that there are 506 words of fuck which are classified into three forms, namely: interjection, emphasizer, and expletive slot filler. The functions conveyed by these taboo words are: catharsis, abusive, and social. These taboo words were translated using omission (72.9%), cultural substitution (15.0%), neutral words (11.5%) and loan word (0.6%). The omission and the neutral word strategy largely eliminated the function of the word fuck, whereas the loan word and cultural substitution strategy were able to maintain the function of the word fuck.
