{"title":"WINNING THE HEARTS OF THE MALAYS: THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE AUTHOR OF SYAIR TUAN HAMPRIS TOWARDS THE COLONIALISTS","authors":"Rahimah Hamdan","doi":"10.35631/IJCREI.25001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35631/IJCREI.25001","url":null,"abstract":"This study was aimed at identifying the author’s perspective of the colonialists, and to analyse her relationship with one of them in her poem. The British colonisation of the Malay world in the nineteenth century gave rise to various reactions and attitudes among the indigenous communities, the majority of whom were opposed to colonisation, as recorded in traditional Malay literary works. Most of these works expressed the anxiety and hardships they encountered in life under the colonial government. Therefore, it would have been disturbing if any Malay writer were to heap praises on the British colonialists, more so if the writer happened to be a female, as according to the patriarchal system that dominated the conventional Malay literary world, women should be ‘silent’. Nevertheless, this tradition was broken by Hajah Wok Aisyah Nik Idris from Terengganu with her writing of Syair Tuan Hampris, in the early twentieth century. Ironically, in her poem, the author appears to have forgotten the miserable state of the Malays in the other states under the British administration. As such, did Hajah Wok Aisyah have her own reasons for writing the way she did? Was the author of Syair Tuan Hampris captivated by the British administrator? Did the British administrator, J. L. Humphreys, succeed in winning the hearts of the Malays in Terengganu? The method of text analysis was employed in this study, guided by the eight ways proposed by the first British Resident-General of the Federation of Malaya, Sir Frank Swettenham, to Syair Tuan Hampris. This study found that Syair Tuan Hampris invites its readers to savour the unique spectrum of relationships that existed between the colonised people, and the colonialists. The colonialists are no longer regarded as individuals who brought ruin and destruction to the local community, but instead, all their actions are held as being honourable. Thus, the author, being a woman, was able to perfectly explain her closeness to one such colonialist in the verses of her poem. In conclusion, Syair Tuan Hampris is strong and direct proof that women had a voice in the community at that time, even though they had to go against the conventions of Malay literature.","PeriodicalId":274231,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Creative Industries","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133925380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wahid","doi":"10.35631/ijcrei.24001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35631/ijcrei.24001","url":null,"abstract":"Cartoons are not only seen as a media channel to provide entertainment to the community. This is because cartoons play an important role as a very effective medium of information delivery to all groups. The message in the cartoon is conveyed either through the language use and illustrations or mere illustrations from a cartoonist. The display of illustrations with the language used in cartoons in the press indirectly brings current issues in various aspects. Even though these illustrations can help stimulate one's ideas and maturity in evaluating a message. The purpose of this study is to examine language use as a communication strategy in cartoons and describe the use of direct and indirect methods in cartoons. As such, the use of language as a communication strategy is examined based on the language use used in cartoons, namely the language use through direct methods and indirectness methods. The study was conducted qualitatively through a descriptive approach. Study data were taken and collected from cartoons or illustrations produced by Maro cartoonists in the Malaysia Kita column, Mingguan Malaysia. The illustration taken as study data is an illustration that gives an overview of the current situation of the country in Mingguan Malaysia every Sunday for the July and August issues in 2019 and August 2020. Data analysis is done through an approach that presented by Asmah Hj Omar through research on the language use through indirectness methods and the language use through direct methods. The results of this study can be observed that the cartoon in the newspaper clearly shows that there is an emphasis on these two methods as a communication strategy used through language use as a way to ensure that the message conveyed can be understood by all parties. Thus, language use through this indirectness method is the main choice in the delivery of storytelling through cartoons. The study of language on cartoon illustrations needs to be given a wider focus because there are still many vacancies that need to be examined.","PeriodicalId":274231,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Creative Industries","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129169489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hilmiana, Imas Soemaryani, Joeliaty Joeliaty","doi":"10.35631/ijcrei.23001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35631/ijcrei.23001","url":null,"abstract":"In 2016, the Indonesian economy grew by 5.02%. It was the third-largest growth after China and India among the G20 countries. The creative economy itself contributed 852 trillion rupiahs or 7.38% to that GDP. It is a remarkable achievement of the economy of Indonesia. Achieving higher performance requires collaborations among all parties in quadruple helix, contributing to the establishment of partnership patterns. They should work based on their task, principle, function, and capacity in synergy. Hence, it is necessary to set effective guidelines (manual) or ecosystem development of the creative economy at a regional level. Besides, it is a prerequisite to establishing partnership programs between government and creative communities through the program of 3Cs (Connect - Collaborate - Commerce). The problem examined in this study relates to the development of the creative economy based on local arts and culture in Bandung Regency. The main objective of this study is to construct the strategic partnership model which can impact the creative economy sector in Bandung Regency, based on local arts and culture. This research uses a focus group discussion (FGD) technique involving all essential parties and interviews with stakeholders in regional work units who have the authority to make decisions related to the development of the creative economy. FGD and interview generate accountable information related to mapping potential of the creative economy, SWOT analysis and available partnership programs for the development of the creative economy based on local arts and culture, and description of partnership system between related parties in the quadruple helix. Therefore, it is necessary to establish guidelines or document which can be used in the policymaking. Besides, FGD and interview result in the concept of a government partnership program with creative communities through the program of 3Cs (Connect - Collaborate - Commerce). This research is expected to encourage many regions to connect, collaborate, and commerce so they can create new programs that will be conducted together with their supporting partners. The results of this study show that the role of government in the quadruple helix is 60% in 2016, decreasing to 10% in 2019. The decreasing government role is also accompanied by the increasing role of creative entrepreneurs each year (55 percent in 2019). It shows that the development of the creative economy is becoming more independent every year.","PeriodicalId":274231,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Creative Industries","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114276658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
