The demonstration of organic magnetic materials has offered the challenge of finding polymer (organic) materials in which there is sufficient electronic exchange as well as stability both thermally and chemically. The intrinsically conductive and semiconductive polymers have offered flexibility and conductivity to meet needs from batteries to solar cells. This paper gives an update/overview of promising new complex polymer building blocks which can yield conductive, semiconductive, luminescent, ferro-, ferri-, and super-paramagnetic materials for devices of the future in power, storage, displays, and communications devices. The use of these materials to produce electrically active polymeric materials has given us freedom to fabricate devices with novel and useful properties.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Two conventional design methods were used respectively for the design: the Area Product approach, and the Core Geometry approach. The Area Product approach uses the product of the Core Window area and the Core sectional area as the principal design criteria, while the Core Geometry approach uses voltage regulation as the principal design criterion. When a common criterion was used for the design process, both approaches yielded an identical end result.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. However, under certain conditions, e.g., switching operations, the turn insulation may experience very large electrical stress. The turn insulation, if weak, may fail under such conditions. Many of the groundwall failures in machines are suspected to have initiated from a turn insulation failure. Hipot tests are used to test the groundwall insulation. This often leads to suggestions that surges (with sub-microsecond rise time) should be used to test the turn insulation in machine windings. However, the detection of a turn insulation failure in a single coil in a tested complete winding is difficult. The consequent risks involved in surge testing of the turn insulation in a complete machine winding are emphasized and reiterated in this paper. Tests using both single surge generators and repetitive surge generators are illustrated.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. The growth process and shape of water tree in XLPE dielectric under ac electric field is random and branched and cannot be described using Euclidean geometry. The fractal dimension and the branching tendency of water tree in XLPE dielectric are estimated based on partial electric breakdown and fractal theory in this paper. The shapes and structures of water trees observed by an optical microscope proved to have fractal characteristics, i.e., water trees are fractal objects.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Weak spots may be found by evaluating the PD repetition rate over the entire insulation system. If a severe degradation system is active, it will show a much higher PD repetition rate compared to the non-affected part of the insulation system. A method is introduced, which uses the propagation of the pulses through the stator core to localize partial discharges. With the knowledge of the exact spot at which each PD occurs it is possible to determine the PD repetition rate of PD occurrences in the entire stator. Weak spot localization can then be readily identified and localized by their enhanced repetition rate.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. To ensure continued efficient operation of high-voltage machines, the importance of maintaining an adequate degree of conductance along the length of the armour and a sufficient connection between the armour and grading materials cannot be overstated. This paper presents a discussion of the effect of operating environment on the condition of conducting slot armour, and an overview of several types of commercially available materials. An experiment to measure resistance measurements before and after vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) for six different materials is described. Resistance is evaluated as a function of distance from the ground plane. Resistances for two of these materials were re-evaluated over a temperature range approximating that experienced by the material when in operation. Voltage endurance test results are presented for a series of bars made using two of the materials in the resistance study, including observations about deterioration under high-voltage test conditions.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat.
