Increased leakage current is costly as this is lost power distribution or transmission or can lead to the generation of conductive paths and the breakdown of the insulator. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of applied electrical stress on silicone rubber samples aged with acidic precipitation in a fog chamber. It was found that the use of acidic fog ages the samples chemically, regardless of the presence of applied electrical stress, whereas the application of electrical stress in conjunction with acidic precipitation, or multi-factor aging, resulted in the most pronounced aging of the materials.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Based on results corrective actions are taken to preserve and prolong the lifetime of the unit. All insulation materials used in construction of transformer are, made from organic compounds and therefore, decomposes and deteriorates at high temperature. Insulating oil in service will oxidise and eventually reach to a step, which is not fit for the purpose. In such case maintenance guide recommend to change the oil. Insulating paper in service is similarly subjected to beat and also damaged by the oil oxidation products. The same maintenance regime is not applicable to the paper and reaction of paper degradation is not reversible, therefore life of transformer is life of the paper. In practice, it is impossible to have an accurate condition assessment without opening the transformer and have paper sample. In the other hand this is impossible practice and condition of the paper is assessed indirectly. It is established earlier that furfurals are by-products of paper ageing and can be used as indication of paper ageing. However, to relate furfuraldehyde, also named furfural (2FAL), content of a unit to age and extend of paper deterioration more research and laboratory studies are required. This paper describes laboratory studies of paper ageing and relating by-product of paper ageing to state of the insulating paper. Oil and paper are aged at different temperature, 2FAL, gases and moisture of aged samples are measured. A model for paper ageing is established.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Such localized deviations from the norm are potential failure sites. Measurements of capacitance and loss tangent at fixed frequencies do not show any differences that would suggest the presence of structural variations. One measurement that does show pronounced unit-to-unit differences is the capacitance vs. frequency plot in the frequency region below and above self-resonance. Unit-to-unit variations were found when dc bias voltages were applied. In particular, secondary resonances, indicative of the presence of structural inhomogeneities were found to occur at frequencies near to the self-resonance frequency.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Three such methods that this paper will explore with reference to one another are the AC (50-60 Hz), DC, and very low frequency (VLF) (0.1 Hz). Some users choose the AC high potential test knowing that this test best simulates the voltage stress on the winding while in service. Other users prefer the DC high potential test largely due to ease in performing the test. However, the DC voltage does not stress the stator coils the same way as when they are in service and may result in overly pessimistic results due to the influence of surface contaminants in the end windings. Finally, the VLF test, due to recent advances in technology, is becoming more practical for use in field conditions. However, the present standard governing the test is almost 40 years old and there is significant interest in what VLF voltage level best correlates with the AC and DC high potential tests. This paper reports preliminary test results on three generator windings that were destructively tested using the AC, DC, and VLF methods as part of an ongoing effort to provide a database upon which to set the appropriate VLF hipot level for modern synthetic resin-based stator insulation systems.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Dissection of failed stator windings have indicated that partial discharges have been the predominate cause of failure. Partial discharge (PD) may occur between turns during fast rise time voltage surges of sufficient magnitude and may eventually result in turn-to-turn or phase-to-phase failure. By presenting actual measurements of surge environments and the characteristics of partial discharges measured during these surges, this paper discusses the specific mechanisms, and the specific conditions, under which partial discharges may occur in low voltage motors subjected to inverter fed drives. Emphasis is put on recent development outlining progress in the area of surge testing from a diagnostic point of view.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Both failures occurred despite disciplined adherence to traditional regiments for electrical tests and dissolved gas analyses. In 2002, localized temperatures and accelerated hydrogen gas generation were the results of an active fault on the Morgantown Unit 02 GSU. In response, the frequency of dissolved gas analyses increased, and an on-line hydrogen and moisture analyzer was installed. The on-line analyzer provided advance warning of failure while the fault condition remained in the incipient stage. On-line monitoring of hydrogen generation prevented catastrophic failure, and enabled an inventive repair of the winding and expedited return to service of the step-up transformer.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat.
