The problem is formulated as the maximization of the (ergodic or outage) capacity and entails the trade-off between diversity gain (large antenna spacing) and interference-rejection capability of the array (small antenna spacing). In many applications the positions of user and interferes are not known a priori at the time of the antenna deployment or the terminals are mobile. Therefore, the optimization is carried out not only for a fixed positions of users and interferers, but also by averaging aging the capacity over the positions of users and interferers within their cells. The approach to the solution of this problem is twofold. At first, an approximate analytical closed form expression for the capacity as a function of the antenna spacing is derived. Then, the results so obtained are corroborated by optimizing the exact capacity though an extensive search over the optimization domain.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124668789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Release 6 of the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) standard, an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) has been introduced to provide high-speed packet data transmission in the uplink. This channel has the capability to provide high data rate services, both for best-effort and delay-sensitive applications, by introducing scheduling of users with fast resource allocation at the base station. In this paper, we propose an efficient uplink resource allocation algorithm comprising an overload control algorithm, a rate control algorithm, and a soft handoff (SHO) load control algorithm. System-level simulation results are presented that demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm in a multi-cell, multi-user environment. Our simulation result shows that scheduling many users with similar rates leads to a desirable short rise-over-thermal (RoT) tail behavior and better user fairness than scheduling a few high data rate users. The performance analysis of the proposed SHO load control algorithm shows that the algorithm is effective in controlling the tradeoff between cell throughput and user fairness.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124199792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the digital subsystems of the nodes are still riding Moore's Law, there is no such trend regarding the performance of analog components. This work presents a fully integrated architecture of both digital and analog components (including local oscillator) that offers significant reduction in cost, size and power consumption of the overall node. While such a radical architecture cannot offer the reliable tuning of standard designs, it is shown that by using randomized signal processing techniques, a dense network of such nodes can achieve throughput linear in the number of channels available for communication. Moreover, the ratio of the achievable throughput of the untuned network to the throughput of a tuned network with perfect coordination is shown to be close to 1/e.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128949761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such systems result from the use of a multiple beamforming strategy that exploits the channel eigenmodes or, in other words, from the use of joint transmit-receive linear signal processing techniques in multiantenna systems. Since an analytical closed-form expression for the average BER of the multiple beamforming scheme is difficult to be found, we derive an approximation of the BER performance for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) assuming a Rayleigh flat fading channel. In the high SNR regime, the BER versus SNR curve can be characterized in terms of two key parameters: the array gain and the diversity gain. Thus, the proposed analysis offers a simple approach to determine the average performance of the multiple beamforming scheme.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128639535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The channel bandwidth resource is assumed to be allocated equally for broadcast and relay transmissions. Separate power constraints are assumed at the source and the two users. The fading state information is assumed to be known at both the transmitter and receiver of each link, and hence the source and the two users can allocate their power adaptively according to the instantaneous channel state information in a distributed manner. For a fixed allocation of time (for TD broadcast) and power, an achievable rate region based on the relays using the decode-forward scheme for this model is derived. The resource (time and power) allocation is then optimized to maximize each boundary point of this rate region.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128783794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
