Hence we cast the power adaptation (physical layer), scheduling (link layer) and routing (network layer) problems into a joint optimization framework. We analyze this hard non-convex optimization problem, and obtain a dual form consisting of a series of sub-problems. The sub-problem demonstrates the functionalities of the protocol layers and their interaction. We show that the routing problem may be solved by a shortest path algorithm. In the case of ultra wide band (UWB) networks, the power adaptation & scheduling problem is simplified and may be solved. Thus, an algorithmic solution to the joint problem, in the UWB case, is developed. Comparison of results with the previous information theoretic capacity results on UWB networks, demonstrates the importance of this cross-layer optimization framework.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116771032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we derive a complete model of the interference which takes into account MAI, ISI, and ICI. Based on this model, we introduce a new multicarrier interference subspace rejection (MC-ISR) receiver and analyze its performance in an unknown time-varying Rayleigh channel with multipath, carrier offset and cross-correlation between subcarrier channels. We also propose a realistic implementation of this receiver which includes an efficient strategy for carrier offset recovery in a multicarrier and multiuser detection scheme. Simulation results confirm the net advantage of the full interference suppression capabilities of MC-ISR.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114771677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In real-world systems, like currently available commercial WLAN equipment, the instantaneous signal levels can only be measured with little accuracy. They are affected by a lot of noise from different sources, the measurement hardware is often not calibrated and the sampling interval is coarse and varying. Channel prediction should therefore be able to deal with noisy and non-equidistant data. Furthermore, the algorithms should be relatively simple, since no complex hardware can be afforded for simple WLAN, Bluetooth or sensor systems. In this paper we introduce a prediction algorithm based on a simple artificial neural network. The algorithm is tested on signal strength values measured with a standard 802.11b WLAN card in various environment conditions. The prediction results are compared with a state-of-the-art channel prediction algorithm. We show that a simple artificial neural network can be used as a robust and comparatively accurate predictor.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125233445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The receiver structures presented here are motivated from the increasing demand of high sampling rates required in broadband communication systems. To this end, this family of receivers efficiently parallelizes the ADC structure through the signal projection of the received signal onto a set of basis functions. We show that the sampling rate requirements are relaxed as the number of basis functions is increased, which introduces a trade-off between complexity and sampling rate. An example with a multiband ultra-wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing receiver is presented, which shows practical degrees of the trade-off between complexity and sampling rate reduction. Additionally, although the paper focuses in the design of linear digital receivers (matched filter, RAKE, MMSE, etc), an example with a nonlinear receiver based on transmitted-reference signaling is also provided.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124323042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the linear precoding schemes, we assume that the channel state information (CSI) is available only at the transmitter but not at the receiver. We propose several precoding techniques and the corresponding power control algorithms. The performance metric used in the comparisons is the total power required at the transmitter to achieve certain QoS at the receiver. Our results reveal that in general multiuser detection and precoding offer similar performance; but in certain scenarios, precoding can bring a substantial performance improvement. These results motivate the use of precoding techniques to reduce the complexity of the mobile terminals (only a matched-filter to the own spreading sequence is required without CSI).","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124787540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Precisely, we focus our attention to the case where the transmitter has access only to the modulus of the channel coefficients. In some circumstances, a particle filter can perform substantially better than other tracking algorithms. A simple implementation is to transmit measurement data gathered at distributed sensors to a fusion centre and apply a single particle filter. The filter estimates the current position and predicts future locations so that appropriate sensors can be activated. This centralized approach can be energy-expensive and prone to failure: uncompressed data must be transmitted across multiple hops and there is a concentration of data transmission around the fusion site, which constitutes a single point of failure. This paper addresses these issues by proposing a distributed particle filter implementation in which parallel filters run at multiple nodes. These shared filters are used to quantize vectors of measurements. Simulations indicate that the scheme significantly reduces the energy expenditure of communication.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130836150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
