The HomePlug AV standard, expected to be released in mid 2005, will provide a tenfold improvement in average throughput over 1.0.1. While AV is optimized for multimedia audio-visual (AV) communication, it is important that AV devices coexist with those of 1.0.1. To achieve this, the preamble which begins all AV packets should be robustly detectable by both AV and 1.0.1 nodes. AV devices must also be capable of transmitting 1.0.1 compatible priority and control waveforms, which conform to each region's spectral mask. This paper describes the hurdles that needed to be scaled to generate the compliant waveforms for coexistence, using the AV structures.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116759433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This definition is motivated by an analysis of the pairwise error probability. The maximum-SNR (MSNR) class of prefilters includes decision feedback equalization (DFE) and channel shortening equalization (CSE) prefilters. The feedback taps are completely suppressed by the CSE prefilter and not suppressed at all by the DFE prefilter. The MSNR class includes hybrid prefilters which are a combination of CSE and DFE prefilters. Hybrid prefilters allow middle ground for suppressing feedback taps which is desirable for equalization using decision feedback sequence estimation (DFSE). We show simulation results for joint DFSE demodulation of two 8-PSK modulated cochannel EDGE users using a single antenna receiver. We find that a hybrid prefilter performs best for this example.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"4541 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125044622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main restriction is that standard terminals should not be modified in any way. For such networks, cross-layer design coupled with node cooperation and rate adaptation can significantly reduce both energy consumption and delay. In this paper, we propose a cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique where multiple nodes within a cluster cooperate in signal transmission and reception with optimal rate. In our scheme, local information exchange within the cluster is not necessary if Alamouti codes are used with appropriate transmission scheduling. A cross-layer design framework is then applied that optimizes routing and rate to minimize the energy consumption and delay. For the cooperative MIMO scheme, routing is optimized based on an equivalent non-cooperative system, where each cooperating cluster is treated as a super node. We derive the best energy-delay tradeoff curve under this optimization model and show that the cooperative MIMO approach dramatically improves energy and delay performance, especially when rate adaptation is used.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125226391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The receiver yields satisfactory detection performance even in the presence of inter-pulse interference (IPI) while transmission rate is increased to near full rate compared to a 50% rate loss in a conventional TR system. This paper further extends the TR modulation to a multiuser scenario by assigning a pair of frame rate pseudo-random (PN) sequences to each user, modulating the amplitude of each pulse in the doublet respectively, irrespective of adopted data modulation formats. Given a user's PN sequence that modulates the reference pulse, the mean estimator is still applicable to estimate channel-distorted waveform for that user in the presence of IPI and multiple access interference. Then correlation based data demodulation is assisted by the other PN sequence modulating the data pulse, and constructed template from estimated waveform. Waveform estimation error and bit error rate detection performance are studied analytically and experimentally.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126361906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general it was observed that, the number of clusters to optimize the energy consumption is a non-increasing function of long haul distance. By virtue of this, we conclude that as the long haul distance increases the cooperation among the nodes increases. Also, for large long haul distances the optimal number of clusters is shown to converge to a constant. Next, we propose a provably convergent block coordinate descent algorithm to determine the optimal joint rate and number of clusters. Through our numerical results it was observed that a cluster optimized cooperative MIMO transmission scheme can be more energy efficient than a rate only optimized scheme. Also a joint rate and cluster optimized transmission scheme can yield large scale energy savings for short and medium range applications compared to the rate only or cluster only optimized transmission schemes.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121041279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper provides a positive answer by realizing information-theoretic secrecy with space-time transmissions. While most existing results on information-theoretic secrecy rely on some impractical assumptions, we propose a more practical approach that uses the redundancy of space-time transmissions to create intentional ambiguity to the adversary. Secrecy can be guaranteed even if the adversary has extremely high receiving signal-to-noise ratio. This approach is presented as a new way for secret-key agreement. Simulations in terms of receiving error rate and secret channel capacity are presented.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134411788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cooperative diversity exploits the broadcast nature of wireless networks by allowing multiple users to relay information for each other, so as to create multiple signal paths. This paper studies what is the best strategy in combining these two types of diversity for real-time multimedia communications by comparing the distortion-rate performance of different joint diversity schemes. Results show that exploring both types of diversity improves the system performance most, but in most of cases, only one type of diversity can achieve most of the diversity gain. The best performance is obtained when the mobile can switch between cooperative and non-cooperative operation depending on the channel conditions. Thus, we remark that it is important to design efficient protocols that manage this switch and provides motivation for all users to cooperate.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133670714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One is channel estimation, possibly in a parametric or physical model form. The other concerns (partial) channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), typically used in MIMO systems for the design of spatial prefiltering and water-filling. For the purpose of channel estimation, it has recently become customary to combine mean and covariance information in a Bayesian approach, leading to a MMSE or MAP improved channel estimate. For the purpose of generating CSIT, the cases of mean or covariance information are still being treated separately. A Bayesian approach is presented here incorporating both pieces of information. The approach yields the existing cases of mean or covariance information as special instances. We then take the unified approach one step further by allowing not only the mean information to be noisy but also the covariance information.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128951009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
