The paper analyzes the effect of the cross-correlation between the users signatures and the MAI when optimal maximum likelihood (ML) multi-user detection schemes are used in coded-modulations. The paper shows that the presence of MAI is not critical for most operating conditions, resulting in a relaxation of the conventional (almost) orthogonal signature designs commonly adopted when single or multi-user linear detectors are considered. The analysis is based on the identification of the cutoff-rate associated to the synchronous and the asynchronous multiple access of DS-CDMA schemes. The study of the asynchronous access is of particular interest in the sense that it allows the extension of the analysis for the most relevant case in which the cutoff-rate is computed for frequency selective channels. These results are of interest and applicable for almost stationary or slowly time-varying operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131127394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient contention-based MAC protocol for wireless local area networks, namely, the less collision fast resolution (LCFR) algorithm. This algorithm is developed based on the following innovative ideas: to reduce probability of collision and speed up the backoff procedure. We actively redistribute the backoff timers for all active nodes and reduce the backoff timers exponentially fast. The MAC protocol with this new algorithm attempts to provide significantly higher throughput and low latency performance for data services in wireless LANs than the IEEE 802.11 MAC algorithm. We demonstrate that this algorithm indeed resolves collisions faster and reduces the idle slots more effectively.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132577928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, the PMEPR can even be made a constant independent of the number of subcarriers n. However, finding the best sign requires a search over 2/sup n/ possible signs which is computationally prohibitive. In this paper, we first propose a greedy algorithm to choose the signs based on p-norm minimization and we prove that it can achieve a PMEPR of order log n. We further decrease the PMEPR by enlarging the search space considered by the greedy algorithm. By ignoring peaks with probability less than 10/sup -3/, simulation results show that the PMEPR of a multicarrier system with 128 subcarriers each one modulated by 64QAM constellations is reduced to 3.4. This implies that at the cost of one bit of information per subcarrier (i.e., not sending information over the sign of each subcarrier) and modest computational complexity in the transmitter, the PMEPR can be reduced from 12.5 to 3.4 which is within 1.6 dB of the PMEPR of a single carrier system with 64QAM modulation.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133428383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is not obvious how these results translate to real-world transmission strategies. Thus, in this paper the error performance of adaptive bit and power loading with perfect channel state information is compared to that of high-rate multistratum space-time codes relying only on transmit diversity. We demonstrate that the latter may even outperform the adaptive scheme if discrete rate constraints are taken into account.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133147320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This equalizer structure presents a tapped line of all-pass and low-pass filters. Such a structure is inherently stable since all its poles are within the unit circle. We also discuss a method for bases parameterizing (poles choice) based on the channel characteristics. The proposed structure performances are compared with conventional FIR equalizer ones. The results are evaluated in terms of MSE and overall numerical complexity. Traditional trained algorithms are employed for filter weight adapting. Our simulations show that the proposed structure leads to enhanced performances offering an alternative reduced complexity solution for communication channel equalization problem.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130297662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we consider the optimal power scheduling for the joint estimation of a Gaussian source by an inhomogeneous Gaussian sensor network. The goal is to minimize the total power consumption while satisfying a certain mean squared distortion constraint. We assume that sensors transmit their observations in an analog fashion: each sensor simply amplifies and forwards its noise-corrupted analog observation through an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel to the fusion center (FC), while the latter combines the received sensor messages to generate the final estimate. Such analog forwarding strategy can be shown to be optimal in the single sensor case by Shannon's separation principle. For the multiple sensor case, we derive the optimal power scheduling using convex optimization and show that it admits a simple distributed implementation. Simulations show that the proposed power scheduling improves the mean squared error (MSE) performance by a large margin when compared to that achieved by the uniform power scheduling.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124272880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A natural way of communication in target detection is to let sensors simultaneously transmit one of two predetermined frequency tones indicating whether the target is detected or not. Recently, this scheme has been generalized to consider non-binary sensor observations by letting sensors simultaneously transmit orthogonal waveforms depending on the value of their observations-type-based multiple access (TBMA). TBMA was shown to be asymptotically optimal in terms of detection-error probability under the idealistic assumptions that the sensor channel gains are identical, and the sensor data are conditionally independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.). In this paper, TBMA is analyzed in a more general framework by considering non-i.i.d. data and non-identical channel gains. An asymptotically optimal detector is proposed and its error-exponents for detection probabilities are characterized using tools from large deviations theory. Numerical simulations are used to demonstrate that the error exponents provide reasonably accurate estimates of the performance of TBMA.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134540314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This issue is of importance because in many practical situations the ambient noise is impulsive due to various natural and man-made impulsive sources. In this paper a novel H/sup /spl infin// estimation based robust multiple model detector (RMMD) is proposed. We have considered here binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) signals transmitted simultaneously by multiple users via a CDMA flat-fading channel and embedded in impulsive noise. Simulation results show that, in impulsive noise and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the bit-error-rate (BER) performance gain afforded by the proposed multiuser detector can be substantial when compared to a H/sup 2/ based multiple model detector (IMM-SIC) and the iterative M-estimator-based decorrelating detector, recently proposed in the literature.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123923108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we derive upper and lower bounds on the ergodic channel capacity of these MSE-optimal pilot-aided transmission (PAT) schemes. These bounds may be used to allocate power between pilot and data, as well as to choose among MSE-optimal pilot/data patterns.
