Software skills are increasingly important for statistical practitioners. Data science may be regarded by statisticians as a new name for statistical science but in industry and government the perception may be different. Recent advances in IT have enabled us to collect, store and easily access large amounts of data with modest cost. The capacity to analyse the data and use it for decision making has lagged behind. Software has been developed to filter, access and analyse data. Computer scientists and statisticians have been working separately, not jointly on this. This paper explores the implications of Big Data for statisticians’ education and aims to identify what skills are needed and software packages to use as well as the gaps between the perceptions of practitioners and academics about these issues.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121119070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A responsabilidade foi atribuída à Escola Nacional de Ciências Estatísticas (ENCE), que recebeu em 2005 a missão de consolidar a EaD como atividade permanente, com prioridade de atendimento para a rede de 583 agências, em todo o País. Nos Censos 2007 (Contagem da População e Censo Agropecuário) foram desenvolvidos os primeiros projetos, capacitando 1922 técnicos. Em 2008 foi criada a Escola Virtual IBGE, que adotou o modelo de design instrucional clássico, por meio do qual se articulam a gestão de processos e recursos pedagógicos e tecnológicos, estruturados para facilitar a aprendizagem. Por intermédio da Escola Virtual IBGE alcançou-se o total de 28.524 concluintes, em treinamentos de curta duração. A EaD representa um passo estratégico para reforçar o processo de transformação do IBGE em organização de aprendizagem.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125052432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abordamos, neste artigo, aspectos e elementos relevantes para o desenvolvimento desse letramento, tais como, a transnumeração (Wild e Pfannkuch, 1999; Pfunnchuk, 2008) e a utilização de múltiplos registros de representação semiótica (Duval, 2003) são estudados e articulados em textos, tais como Coutinho, Silva e Almouloud (2011). Para tanto, faz-se necessário o uso de ambientes computacionais, de forma a potencializar a construção dos conceitos da estatística descritiva. A partir dessa perspectiva, efetuaremos a análise didática dos softwares Geogebra e R na construção de gráficos; discutindo critérios, identificando contribuições, fragilidades, ou limitações. Tais critérios serão discutidos à luz da contribuição para a construção e mobilização desses conhecimentos conduzindo o aluno no desenvolvimento e evolução do letramento estatístico (Gal, 2002).","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114998767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are barriers to be overcome before citizens engage with these data. First is access; data are often distributed across different websites. Second is exposure; data need to be presented in the most commonly used information sources. Third is engagement – creating a climate where citizens are interested in evidence. The House of Commons Library (Library) and Durham University are collaborating in order to promote better use of data. The Library is the first port of call for politicians; their blogs and tweets are a major information resource for journalists. A website created ahead of the UK general election provides a rich resource for data at constituency level. Quizzes have been created which run on smartphones, in an effort to engage a broader section of people in evidence-based discussions. We discuss strategies designed to encourage public engagement with official statistics.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132323649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Durham University and the House of Commons Library are collaborating to create data visualisations (DV) which will be accessible to politicians, researchers and journalists. The focus of this paper is a DV designed to be useful in the run-up to the 2015 general election. The aim was to assemble a rich resource from multiple sources, and to make it easy for target groups to manipulate data and draw conclusions. We identify important changes to the DV as it evolved over 13 iterations, and draw conclusions about appropriate design processes and validation.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130529317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of numeramentality is used from an analytical perspective to study normativities based on quantification, measurement, use and record of numbers, which have guided ways of thinking and acting in contemporaneity. The methodology consists of a historical, genealogically oriented approach founded on Michel Foucault’s work, and a pragmatic understanding of language and practices as proposed by Wittgenstein. Risk is analyzed as an element that currently acts in the government of populations and individuals by becoming a curriculum component. The study also highlights the way through which the Brazilian school curriculum has produced socially desirable ways of thinking and acting in accordance with the governmental order.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133032485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper documents the development of a Statistical Literacy module for Primary Teachers (SL-P). The project’s approach focusses on real life applications of statistics that students are genuinely interested in, coupled with scaffolding applications of digital technologies. An enquiry-based model supports the design of learning activities, which include appropriate resources to support individual and peer learning. Trials of the module will provide feedback on the effectiveness of the SL-P module in terms of student engagement and development of statistical literacy. The outcomes of the study will provide direction for re-shaping teacher education programs and professional learning to include statistical literacy as a core component.","PeriodicalId":273663,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Statistics Education: Developments, Experiences, and Assessments IASE Satellite","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115486013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
