In this paper, we propose a subband affine projection algorithm with improved convergence performance and reduced computational complexity for multiple-input multiple-output equalization in the blind environments. All of the adaptive filters in subband affine projection equalization are decomposed to polyphase components, and the coefficients of the decomposed adaptive subfilters are updated by defining the multiple cost functions. An infinite impulse response filterbank is designed for the data prewhitening. Prewhitening data through subband filtering can speed up the convergence rate without additional computation. Simulation results are presented showing the proposed algorithm's convergence rate and constellation equalization performance.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114924639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has a positive effect on the recovery speed of a patient after major surgical procedures or prolonged illness. This paper presents the architecture of a healthcare wireless network that exploits the capabilities of ultra wideband technology (UWB) for medical sensing and in-body tracking and imaging. The communication requirements for an UWB wireless body area network (WBAN) are enlisted. Both on-body and in-body sensors are taken into consideration. Special attention is paid to the requirements of a capsule endoscope, which is one of the most throughput-demanding sensors in modern telemedicine.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116329776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integration of various networks is not trivial, especially if one targets high performances. Modeling and simulation — based analysis provides sufficient means for performance evaluation, even in the abstract phases of the network development. This paper provides a unique combination of protocol development and network simulation method by merging the Specification and Description Language (SDL) developer and QualNet simulator. Moreover, the paper gives a detailed insight of the modeling process of novel resource management architecture (RIWCoS), along with valuable SDL codes and sequences.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123909406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This feature can be successfully exploited to realize wearable systems capable to measure human static and dynamic postures. In particular some efforts have been made to determine finger joint movements of human hands and it has been demonstrated the feasibility of using the so called data glove system as a goniometric device. The repeatability of such system is quite good for general purposes but it is still not sufficient for specific applications (for instance in virtual surgery). So here we introduce a novel application method of bend sensors and demonstrate how it can be useful to improve the system repeatability.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123973902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, a novel implementation of a spectrum sensing technique, using a generalized version of the Neyman Pearson test, is considered. This novel implementation overcomes the usual prerequisite of the known noise power. This benefit is achieved by normalizing the signal and accurately calculated the threshold for that particular hypothesis which reflects the absence of the useful signal, usually termed hypothesis H2. It is shown by simulation results that the performance of the novel detector is promising.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122798189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of this industry-led initiative of major industrial and excellent academic organizations is the improvement, integration, and the applications of UltraWideband Radio Technology (UWB-RT). The EUWB project has significantly enhanced the scientific knowledge base in the UWB-RT and has provided sophisticated new applications enabled by UWB and highly demanded in several European key industrial sectors such as home entertainment consumer electronics, automotive, public transportation, and heterogeneous networks. Without a doubt, the efficient exploitation of cross-layer functionalities will lead to successful applications of UWB technologies. Beside the cognitive radio related technology, namely the Detect-And-Avoid (DAA) technology, the localization and tracking (LT) technology is a major aspect of EUWB, in particular the underlying LT protocol. Within the scope of this manuscript, the authors will give a brief overview of EUWB by illustrating its technical approach. Furthermore, the authors will describe a novel LT protocol as well as its application to a typical scenario. This application is tailored to operate also with UWB devices that do not fully comply with the previously proposed LT schemes which need specific physical and medium access control layer functionalities.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126880799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examples are not only Location Based Services (LBSs), but also enhanced emergency call services such as the North American E911, or the newly defined eCall, which is planned to become a European standard as a part of the eSafety initiative of the European commission. Mobile network providers already offer LBS along with positioning, although the accuracies and reliabilities of the present techniques do not yet meet the requirements of the newly defined services in all cases. One of the most popular positioning systems in navigation is the GPS, which is satellite-based, quite accurate and widely available, as long as the receiver to be localized and the satellites have a LOS connection. In this presentation, an overview of positioning and tracking schemes will be given.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127647718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commonly, the offline analysis is performed in a subjective and time-consuming manner via slow-motion playback. In this study an objective method for overcoming this drawback is presented being based on phonovibrogram (PVG) images. For a set of normal voices and subjects suffering from vocal fold paralysis or functional dysphonia the laryngeal dynamics were captured by specialized phonovibrogram features and classified using a support vector machine (SVM). In case of functional voice disorders a mean classification accuracy of 78.5% was obtained while in vocal fold paralysis a classification accuracy of up to 93% could be obtained. The classification results show that the PVG features hold a lot of promise in supporting diagnosis of voice pathologies even in case of muscle tension dysphonia.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114489009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
