This paper addresses the main design concerns and requirements when conceiving ambient care systems (ACS), frameworks to provide remote monitoring, emergency detection, activity logging and personal notifications dispatching services. In particular, the paper describes the design of an ACS built on top of a WSN composed of Crossbow's MICAz devices, external sensors and PDAs enabled with ZigBee technology. The middleware is integrated in an OSGi framework that processes the acquired information to provide ambient services and also enables smart network control. From our experience, we consider that in a future, the combination of ZigBee technology together with a service oriented architecture may be a versatile approach to AAL services offering, both from the technical and business points of view.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121034092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper proposes a biometrics based solution, combining encryption and authentication for wireless communication within a body sensor network (BSN), as well as between a BSN and a remote server (RS) of a tele-healthcare system. The method aims to use static and dynamic biometric traits to generate authentication and encryption keys respectively. Keys of 64 and 128 bits were generated from electrocardiogram and photoplethysmogram of 9 subjects and fingerprint images of 20 subjects. The entropy of the keys ranged from 0.662 to 1 and the hamming distances between them were all non-zero. The results of this study found that random and distinctive keys can be generated by a biometric approach for encrypting and authenticating data in tele-healthcare systems.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126772657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a vector network analyzer, our proposed microwave system shows the ability of detecting the heartbeat signal at different frequencies, as well as at different output power levels. Based on parameters extracted from real measurements, a model representing the heartbeat and the respiration signals is presented. Different processing techniques are used in order to separate the heartbeat and the respiration signals. For different signal to noise ratios, wavelet filters show higher accuracy over classic filters in determining both the heartbeat rate and the heart rate variability.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129102786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Related to this is appearing a group of social-healthcare services to promote health and wellness in elderly, known as Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology can help to face this challenge providing a service and networks convergence. IMS offers a group of common services which can be reused in different applications, and enable the use of the same application over any device, anywhere and anytime. In this paper we describe a medical application that shows how IMS can be used to create this kind of AAL services. It is based on a medical home teleconsulting between a patient and a doctor that the user could have from his own home avoiding trips and supporting independent life.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"36 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116347418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To pave the way to commercialization, an appropriate implementation concept and its corresponding validation are of utmost importance. Without a doubt, the most challenging requirements introduced by the DVB-T2 specification are an FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) size of up to 32k samples, 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and LDPC (Low-Density Parity-Check) coding with a block size of 64k bits. In that context, point estimates of the channel states are replaced by probability densities optimally representing the knowledge about the channel state. It is foreseen that the importance of such techniques will grow with the advent of ¿agile¿ devices, operating in complex environments where accurate estimation of all channel parameters is out of question.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128130685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The absorbed power and SAR were calculated using finite-difference time-domain. The mobile phones were modeled as half-wavelength dipole antenna placed at the distance of 16 mm from the head, with a transmitting power of 0.25 W. Our results show that child passenger without phone absorbs more power passively as compared to adult passenger. For the case when non-user passenger is surrounded by five passengers using mobile phones, power of 118 and 218 mW were absorbed by the adult and child models, respectively, implying that the passive rf exposure depends on the size of the passengers. Furthermore, the maximum values of the whole-body SARs due to passive exposure are obtained in this work are much smaller than the ICNIRP basic restriction.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125089938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microfluidic technology holds high promise to facilitate the progress of biology by enabling miniaturization and upgrading of current biological research tools due to its advantages such as low sample consumption, reduced analysis time, high-throughput and compatible sizes with most biological samples. In this report, we have developed a microfluidic device integrating drug cytotoxicity assay and anti-proliferation assay. The hormone-sensitive breast cancer cell line MCF-7 cells were assessed for prevalence of apoptosis and mitosis and examined immunofluorescence assay was for anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and Ki67(a marker of proliferation) expression induced by mitomycin C (MMC) and tamoxifen (TAM). The growth of MCF-7 was inhibited by MMC in a concentration-dependent manner. TAM inhibited the growth of MCF-7 in a dose-dependent manner in static state. However, dynamic effects TAM did not inhibit the growth of MCF-7 cells in 50μM. These results suggested that MMC may be more effective than TAM on breast cancer cells. The microfluidic device, therefore, provides a microscale alternative to currently used in vitro methods of drug screening and is a potential useful tool for high content screening and high throughput screening research.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122320266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
