Among these systems, P300-based BCIs are widely diffused as they are easy to manage and do not require a training for the subjects. These systems, however, are still too slow so that they are actually used only by those patients that are unable to control any muscle. It is possible to improve their performances, but many different analyses need to be performed. Here a set of tools are described for the analysis and optimization of this class of BCI protocols that allow increasing the performances of such systems.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127086038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is to accentuate the Assistive Technology (AT) from the end user perspective. This paper supports that older adults and those with dementia should no longer be an overlooked population and how the HCI community can learn from their experiences to develop methods and design interfaces which truly benefit their target population. Guidelines from previous research are incorporated along with eclectic, user-centered strategies as the interface designers for project ISISEMD develop appropriate and effective modalities.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115466065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using time-multiplexed busy bursts (BB) in a minislot, the receivers actively broadcast a power signal on their reserved time-frequency slot. The potential new transmitters that intend to reuse the already reserved resources can infer from the received BB power the amount of co-channel interference (CCI) they would cause (prior to transmission) — especially if channel reciprocity can be guaranteed. This is vital information for the new transmitter to decide without any central supervision whether to transmit or defer the transmission to another time or frequency so as to limit CCI caused to the active link. Specifically, CCI is limited to a threshold value chosen system-wide. It is demonstrated that with the BB-enabled CCI mitigation approach, by setting the interference threshold parameter to an optimal value, a gain of up to 40% in sum throughput can be achieved compared to uncoordinated random medium access in such ad hoc networks. Moreover, it is demonstrated that by adjusting the system-wide threshold, the system throughput can be traded off to significantly enhance the link throughput in the lower percentiles.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131242986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important aspect is the realistic facial motion of human like characters according to the actual speech sounds. This paper describes a memory and CPU efficient method for visual speech synthesis for on-line applications using voice connection over network. The method is real-time, can be activated on the receiver client without server support. It is needed only to send coded speech signal and the visual speech synthesis is the task of the receiving client. This way deaf or hard of hearing people can lipread the transmitted audio speech. The animation rendering is supported by graphical accelerator devices, so CPU load of the conversion is insignificant.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125801671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the adhesive electrodes and wires cause discomfort to the patients and hamper the parent-child interaction. In this paper, we propose the application of wireless transmission technology for neonatal monitoring at NICU. To demonstrate the design concept, a prototype wireless transmission system is built using BlueSMiRF and Arduino pro mini. Software is developed for ensure the correct data transmission, detection and display. The system is designed to be suitable for integration into a non-invasive monitoring platform such as a smart neonatal jacket. Experimental results show that the prototype system successfully transmits and receives data from multiple sensors within the range of 20 m.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115188675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since these oscillations are non-stationary, time-frequency (T-F) analysis has been used in studying cardiovascular oscillations such as variabilities of heart rate and blood pressure; however, few studies have extended the T-F analysis to other cardiovascular signals such as pulse transit time (PTT). In this preliminary study, a T-F analysis method based on a time-variant autoregressive model was used to study the beat to beat spectra of R-R interval (RRI) of electrocardiogram, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and PTT on 8 normotensive subjects after exercise. It is observed from the results that spectra of RRI, SBP and PTT comprised of two distinguished components in the 0.03–0.15 Hz and 0.18–0.4 Hz respectively and that the spectra of SBP and PTT were relatively similar compared to spectra of RRI. However, the beat to beat power spectral densities (PSD) of the signals were not the same all the time. Furthermore, a physiological mechanism-based model was proposed for the generation of ECG, BP and PPG signals, and to interpret the phenomena observed in experiments. Further investigation is needed to quantify this similarity and to study the inherent correlations and mechanisms mediating these cardiovascular oscillations.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122737560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Segmentation is the most crucial step in a CAD (Computer-Aided Diagnosis) system as lung borders delimit the region inside which pathological areas are searched for, while mediastinum borders identify the region containing the lymph nodes used for staging and restaging phases. Our method consists of an appropriate combination of image processing techniques. It was tested on CT images with different attributes such as resolution and slice thickness, containing 47 cancerous areas. We achieved almost 90% and 100% correct segmentation for lung and mediastinum, respectively.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117093279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our results for frequency dependence of complex permittivity prove the fundamental Cole-Cole model but also the necessity to investigate the biological tissues like heterogeneous material with not only one relaxation phenomena.
